Okay so for awhile now I've had a little widget or whatever you wanna call it that occasionally pops up pestering me to get Windows 10. I've decided I don't want windows 10. Heard it has some issues running games and invades your privacy. So I'll stick with Windows 7.

Can anyone tell me how to get rid of the Windows 10 ad spam? I tried looking under programs I couldn't find it. I'm guessing I need to uninstall some update to get rid of it? Can anyone tell me what exactly I need to do to get rid of it?

Thanks for your help.

Set it as hidden too, so it doesn't get installed again.

I wouldn't count on that alone because during this past year, and on several occassions, M$ has been unhiding certain updates related to Windows 10 upgrades and putting them into my mandatory updates queue (which is infuriating).

So what must also be done here, is to additionally disable automatic updates and instead choose the following option under "change settings"...

  • Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them

Had I not already had it selected to this, I'd have received multiple updates that I had hidden and didn't want, and sometimes the same updates become unhidden multiple times too so you have to check each and every one beforehand now. I will never, ever update to Windows 10, that's for sure.

Good to know, thanks. I always use that setting too because I want control over stuff.

^That, plus hiding windows 10 update in Windows Update. Now I'm a happy alien.

The first guys post fixed it for me. I went with option 4.

I don't have that upgrade button or popup nags, probably because I've blocked the hidden task that installs it. I don't know if it will get rid of it, but try this, look in your task scheduler under Microsoft / Windows / Application Experience and disable all three tasks there.

if you really have a problem with the telemetry data collection in win10, you should check your win7 updates. this data collection also happens in win7/8. and if you don't want it, you might have to uninstall an update there (if it is installed). don't know the KB number right now, but i am sure you can google that quickly.

Yeah, i suppose you didn't hear about the telemetry update involving windows 7 and 8.1 - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3068708 You are no longer safe.

I did hear about that. I have it disabled. Maybe I'll delete it to be extra sure though..

Also, for windows 10 there is a cab file that lets you block/disable certain services and updates. I have installed windows 10 a few days ago and i must say, it's really good. The resource allocation is much better and the gaming experience is 10-20% smoother. And i did this by comparing multiple msi afterburner reports for CPU, GPU, RAM from win7, win8.1 and the present one, win10.

I play a lot of older games ranging from the 90's to the 00's. I saw a lot of people having issues getting older games working on windows 10. Even with compatibility mode. I'd rather not mess with it. Windows 7 works fine for me. I'm probably going to use it until I'm forced to use a newer OS.

A good amount of indie games released in the range of last few years don't run well or don't run at all on windows 10. Some developers started working on fixing that though.

And yeah I think sticking with 7 until it gets completely outdated is a good idea.

Yup. when Windows 7 ends up like XP or Vista. I'll bite my tongue and get a new OS. For now I'm perfectly content with 7.

is there a list somewhere? i played a lot of different games since my win10 upgrade, and so far absolutely everything worked. so my impression is more, that it's just a small chunk of the available (and relevant) games out there that have a problem with win10. win7 had the same problem, btw, when it was new.

the biggest problem would be all safedisc/securom games, of course. but i understand that we can't keep those old drivers forever in every new OS. at some point you have to drop the old garbage. maybe it would have been a good idea to wait a little longer with that. ;)

I'm an old fart stuck in his ways! -Shakes fist- I still remember the windows 95 days. I was just a young lad back then.

I'm just happy and content with 7 and don't wanna change until I'm forced :)

Nobody made a list, I just noticed people complain about it on certain game forums I follow.

Now some games do work if you set compatibility mode on earlier versions of windows on Win10.

I've seen people complain about Mercenary Kings not working on Windows 10, I think most if not all games made in GameMaker don't work in Windows 10 due to engine not supporting it yet.

I can't remember other games, but I know there's more, all indies though.

where did you read that? i don't think so. gamemaker is capable of creating windows 10 apps for a while now. i really can't imagine gamemaker games have a general problem with win10. did you maybe read some old news from last year or something?

Nope, those forum threads were made like 1-2 weeks ago I think.

Here's a quote from developer of Coin Crypt:

"We're aware that the game doesn't boot for certain Windows 10 users. On this issue our hands are tied, since the problem is with our game engine, Game Maker Studio. We're eagerly awaiting a compatibility update and will update the game as soon as it's available."

I think they probably fixed it by now. I can't remember the names of other games because I don't really care considering I don't plan on using Windows 10.

i looked up problems with Risk of Rain, which is also a Gamemaker game. while some people have problems on Win10, others say their installation works. seems just so hard to believe that this is a general engine incompatibility then.

The annoying part is you have to uninstall the update you don't want (automatic-crap) and then use said file to block/hide it...

FOR EVERY UPDATE YOU DON'T WANT.

Is there somewhere a list of updates that are adding telemetry? Or this is the only one?
Google is telling me that KB3022345 too is worth to unistall.

ufff...really don't know. maybe there are a few left, but from what i've read, this would be the most important one.

Removing the update is not a permanent fix, the notification files are stored on c:\windows somewhere, first you have to close it running through ctrl atl delete, then you need to get yourself the right permissions (even if you are already administrator) over the files and the folders then you can rename those files and you shouldn't be bothered anymore.
I tried googling it but couldn't find it anymore.

if you are only concerned about telemetry in windows 10, there are several tools to disable or block it (even editing the hosts file).

i only had 1 issue with win10 so far, and it's related to sandboxie and how it manages some apps, but they are working on an update as expected.

Thank you. But I'm going to stick with windows 7. I'm not wild about Microsoft's newer operating systems. Windows 7 has worked great for me. When games and software stop supporting windows 7. Then I'll consider getting a new OS. Until that day I don't see a reason to switch operating systems.

the no. 1 reason is the free upgrade, of course. i see it like this: as a gamer, i will have to switch eventually. so why not do it now for free.
