Looking back, I've not done the best job in keeping track of some of the fantastic music I've come across in the games I've played, and by god is there some good stuff out there. Heck, there were points in my life I've listened to whole soundtracks to games I've never even played. So here we go, it's playlist building time.

For my part, here's possibly one of the best shop tunes I've come across. It's from that spectacle fighter Devil May Cry 5. Capcom please. There be demons that need killing, I don't have an hour make that two okay I live here now the time to sit here groovin' with Nico. Oh wait, I do.

For something from one of my more recent playthroughs, this one is from the dark and gritty Japanese gangster game, Yakuza 3. It's moments like these where I'll go, "Yeah, guess I am going to play every game in this series."

So whether it's an all time favorite or just something that caught your ear, drop a link or some details and I'll check them out. I'll be posting some more recommendations where I can in my replies, and for everyone else

Update 08/06/2025: From this month I'll be picking a theme and putting out weekly recommendations from genres/series/games that have caught my ear. Pop in every Monday to find a new recommendation! Since I'm a bit late this month, I'll do a double feature with weeks one and two together.

Theme for June - You looking for a fight?

Since we haven't seen any recommendations from the fighting genre, thought I'd go broad and highlight some tracks from some of the popular series out there. The genre isn't everyone's cup of tea, so I figured there's a whole host of fantastic music here that people haven't been able to experience.

Week 1 - "Blue Water Blue Sky" from Guilty Gear XX.
Honestly, this soundtrack is all bangers from start to finish. If you enjoy hard rock do yourself a favour and give the whole album a listen. I don't think I've even played more than an hour in any Guilty Gear game but by god is that soundtrack good.

Week 2 - "School -After School Mix- (Sakura Schoolyard)" from Tekken Tag Tournament 2.
I don't normally listen to electronic music, but if it's from Tekken, I know it'll be good. I'll admit, I hadn't been listening to much from the Tekken series until I came across this track recently, but boy have I been missing out. The last Tekken game I played seriously was Tekken 3, but even back then the game's soundtrack was one my favorite things about it.

Yeee, song from fight with Vergil in DMC 5 is one of my favourite. I will go with whole GTA Vice City soundtrack, especially Flash FM. San Andreas was good too. You can't also forget about The Witcher 3 soundtrack. I like too the title song of Total Overdose 2, it's absolute banger in my opinion. In memory as well the ending song of Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty, I little cried when I heard the song for the first time.

Some true blasts from the past here. The radio in GTA was one of the best thing about the games. As for the Witcher 3, apparently there was a whole RPG outside the taverns?? I hadn't thought of Total Overdose in decades but the mind doesn't forget the music. I haven't yet listened to the Cyberpunk 2077 ost (because I wanted to experience this one in game) but who can forget this absolute banger from the trailer.

Apotheosis- Journey's Final Level
(Heck even the dictionary meaning of this word is amazing.)

This level, this music...i think it will stay with me until i lose my senses. Best game I've ever played.
Most of this game I played in a frustrated, irritated yet curious mindset.

But when this level came up.....Everyyythingg....all of it, began to make sense.
What the point of this Journey was.... was the suffering worth it? The game felt incredibly meaningful to me, because I could deeply relate with it w.r.t. my personal Journey. I was at a confused yet low point back then.

I left this game and this music, with happy yet hurt tears. And in awe....thinking....Wow....if this is gaming, i dont think I can ever part with it. A piece of art has made me feel something so real and profound. I must look for this in other forms of art as well or maybe just keep an open mind to life itself.

Ah Journey... one of many Playstation exclusives that I finally got to play years after once it got a PC release. The OST for this one is definitely the highlight of my experience with it, since I played it solo. I think I lost something of the experience playing it that way. The last time I recall feeling something similar though is playing The Outer Wilds. Talk about music perfectly fitting a game. Haunting, beautiful, hopeful, other adjectives invoking a sense of awe.

I'll be frank, the game's core mechanic kept me from beating it (got 80-90% there I reckon). But do I regret playing the game? Not for a moment. The game does organic exploration in a way that I haven't seen since and I loved how creative it was its depiction of space.

Guild Wars -Temple of Tolerance
I cannot get this one completely out of my head even though it's been a very long time since I played the original Guild Wars. There's plenty of other good ones in the soundtrack. Years later I even made an electronic "remix" in my head and keep thinking about it often :D

That they do and I wish I could get past the "have to replay the game" to get the full story of Nier. Someday...

In fact as I was thinking of this topic, and the cobwebs from my mind were getting dusted, a song surfaced that's now stuck in my head and I've since been trying to identify. The Japanese vocals are not helping.

I haven't tried any of the modern gacha games yet (Maplestory is probably the closest thing), but Wuthering Waves recently released on Steam and I've been kind of interested in giving that one a go.

I played for 3 years straight since the start of genshin impact, and somehow quit cold turkey in like 2023. While i won't name specifics because i'm trying to resist the urge to jump back in... I can second that Genshin as some top tier atmospheric and serene tracks. Everyday I hate not playing it, but i hate even more the idea of getting back in and realizing i lost out on however many characters, and whatever special weapons (Fear Of Missing Out kicks in, and that keeps me far away from it)

I would name the Doom Eternal or any of Supergiant's OSTs... but they are fairly well known

but the Path of Exile OST is really good to, you can also use it for free as a content creator of any Path of Exile related content and the OST(.flac) comes with basically all supporter pack purchases for the game.

Doom mentioned. Great, now I got to listen to all of my favorites again. We've all heard "BFG Division", but when this is your main menu/pause track, you know you got something truly special. I bounced off Doom Eternal and as a result, the soundtrack didn't get as much airtime for me, but the riffs continue!

I feel Supergiant's OSTs hit hardest whilst you're playing them (you'll actually see Supergiant recommend to play the games first on the Transistor and Pyre soundtracks) but there's some good stuff in there for the lay person as well. Bastion's got the western vibes, Transistor's got this which is unlike anything in the rest of the soundtrack, Pyre has "Path to Glory", and Hades has this banger.

After giving Path of Exile a fair shake (some 50 hours, I'm hoping PoE 2 will be more my speed), the least I could've done was give the soundtrack a listen. And now I won't be forgetting this one anytime soon.

yea Supergiants OSTs hit hardest while playing them, this is true for most things soundtracks though.

for anime OST's... Symphogear has some great songs in it to, but they just hit harder during the show(partly because of alot of these are sang during battles(if you watch the show, you will understand)

I'll pick a song from 5 games, but most songs in their soundtracks are great:
Roboquest
Dead Cells
Grandia II
Dread Templar
Devil May Cry 3

Me looking at this list. When will they port Grandia 2 to PC? Must I continue to look longingly at Dreamcasts through shop windows?? WHE-- ...what was that? It was ported? Grandia 1 as well? I was under a rock you say? Well, that's another two games on my waitlist. From the OST though, I'm going to pick "Opening Act". Just some beautiful vocals on that one.

Somehow I haven't yet played the original Devil May Cry trilogy. Four was my first Devil May Cry game (it was the first one ported to PC if I'm remembering this right) and I went on to beat DmC and Devil May Cry 5 as well. I've put the HD collection on my wailtlist now.

Dead Cells and Roboquest belong to a genre I don't normally play, so appreciate being able to experience them in this fashion. From Dead Cells, "Astrolab" was my jam and Roboquest had "Guardian".

That title track from Dread Templar worked for me. I also liked "Bloodstained Hollows".

Nice, nice. Grandia 1 and 2 pc ports may not be as "HD" as advertised and they could have been better, but they're still great JRPGs and now on Steam :D

DMC 3 is my favourite for sure, great game. DMC 1 and especially 2 can be a bit rough though.
4 is probably my 2nd pick, but also has very good gameplay. Nice starter.
5 there's some stuff with the style and characters I didn't enjoy, but still good gameplay and that's what matters most for these.
We don't speak about DMC DMC >_<

Cool that you can appreciate the music even if you don't normally play roguelites.
Same story for me with art in something like gacha games that I won't ever play.

Wow. Colour me surprised hearing this opening the soundtrack to one of survival horror's finest. It's a game genre I primarily experience through let's plays and lore videos due to being supernaturally challenged, so I'm glad you decided to share this one.
I think I prefer the remake version though, I just can't pass up a guitar solo.

Off the top of my head (sorry, no time for links right now):

  1. Witcher 3
  2. Hollow Knight
  3. The Last Express
  4. Silent Hill (1, 2 or 3 -- especially the intro songs)
  5. Prince of Persia (The Sands of Time)
  6. Full Throttle
  7. World of Goo
  8. Guild Wars Prophecies
  9. Shadow of the Colossus
  10. Morrowind
  11. Mirror's Edge

That said, some of these only really work in context, so not sure how much enjoyment you get without playing the game first.

Edit: Shit, forgot Bastion and Transistor... Anyway, here is a more complete answer.

So it was you. The one who didn't remind me sooner just how smooth the music from World of Goo could be. In other news, World of Goo 2 released last month??

That's some discussion you've linked there. Truly a treasure trove of titular tracks. Bookmarked and will be revisiting over the coming days.

Some thoughts on the other recommendations:

The Witcher 3. On a rare occasion I'll come across a game, and I'll know. Booting this one up and listening to this in the start menu, and I knew. This game was going to be special. And it was.

I'm holding off to listening to anything from Hollow Knight, I plan to play this one soon™ and would like to know as little as possible.

This track convinced me to add Mirror's Edge to my waitlist. The soundtrack is just a mood.

Full Throttle reminded me how much I enjoyed the song selection in another Tim Schafer game, Brütal Legend (quite a variety here if you're into metal).

Finally, "Nerevar Rising" is a classic that I'm glad is still iterated on today.

I actually won the first game on here! That settles it, this is going to be the next game I play.

Edit: Whew. Just rolled credits on this one. There was a point where I thought, "Is the game getting easier with the levels?" and I'd promptly get roadblocked by a level for an hour. The music really keeps you going though.

From the soundtrack, I enjoyed "Triumph" but "Blackout City" sounded like something right out of the Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game OST. Turned out that was because the composer for Scott Pilgrim was also a guest composer for Bit.Trip Runner as well (Anamanaguchi).

Never played Devil May Cry 5, but damn, that shop music is amazing! The one from Yakuza is great, as well.
If I can find the time next month (and remember to do it), I'll try to make a longer list; right now just a couple that come to mind (without being too obvious):
Far Amp Plains from Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky - this track always gets me pumped somehow.

One of the battle themes (which I vaguely remember having a specific name, but can't find it right now) from Mario & Luigi: Dream Team - this one just brings me pure joy.

Trauma from Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective - I personally prefer this version over the one from the Switch remake, but that might be because that's how I first listened to it. What I like most about video game music is when it's atmospheric and manages to enhance the game's vibe. Thinking back to the moments when this track plays, it perfectly fits the bill. (I recommend not reading the comments if you're interested in playing the game and want to avoid spoilers.)

Violet Sky from Hotel Dusk: Room 215 - similar to the one above, this one just fits the moments it plays in in the most amazing way; it perfectly accompanies the feeling of relief and relaxation when all the lies are uncovered and the truth finally comes out. This, too, is a game where you should avoid spoilers.

You're the first here to have some Nintendo picks! That Mario & Luigi theme is called "Try, try, again". It gives me a very 'first level' or 'hub world' vibes, but getting to hear it more often through battles is the gift that keeps giving. Listening to some of these tracks from older games, I couldn't help wishing they could get modern renditions, free from hardware limitations, but this one actually does and... it missed the mark for me.

Ghost Trick I still remember fondly. It was back when I thought little of the Phoenix Wright games and I thought this game did the 'visual novel' thing much better (I had little knowledge of VNs then and was mostly thinking from a gameplay standpoint). I would eventually come around to Phoenix Wright when I got older and broadened my gaming tastes. The game's OST sounds like it would easily fit in a cyberpunk setting and in this case, I think they did a good job with the arranged version.

The composers for Hotel Dusk nailed their assignment. Understood what they were working with and what we got here is something that still holds up almost two decades later. Good stuff.

So many songs. First one that comes to mind, though, is the final boss music from Lost Odyssey, a game I love and hope one day gets a proper port off of the aging 360.

Howl of the Departed

There's also a game I haven't played yet that I heard recently that I thought had a really catchy tune for its mascot. The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy.

Sirei's Supervision

Oh and there's your first foray into a dying world in Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth. Which is actually two versions of the same song.

So many games trapped on consoles... Put them on PC so that newer (and older) generations can still experience them!

For Lost Odyssey, I quite enjoyed the softer melancholic tracks, notably "Parting Forever" and "A Return, Indeed".

That Hundred Line (or Danganronpa with more gameplay from the looks of it) track was quite groovy. I liked "Carousel" as well. I went back to listen to some tracks from the Danganronpa OST and I'm enjoying The Hundred Lines soundtrack a lot more.

I enjoyed "Hope Star" from the Digimon Story soundtrack. Just a fun track.

You might've picked this up already, but the soundtracks for both The Hundred Line and Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth were composed by the same guy, Masafumi Takada.

Lost Odyssey's A Thousand Years of Dreams has such beautiful atmospheric music. It's the ideal way to tell written stories. A little music, a background, some ambient sounds, and then you tell the most depressing short stories imaginable and smile like a sociopath as your fans drown in tears.

I get chills listening to Parting Forever. Especially when I think about some of the short stories in the game. Mistwalker created their masterpiece with that game. It deserves to be played by a wider audience.

You might've already picked this up already, but the soundtracks for both The Hundred Line and Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth were composed by the same guy, Masafumi Takada.

I did not, but that is a cool fact. I can kind of see the similarities in style now that you mention it. His sound is pretty unique.

My all time favorite (breath of fire iv endings and beginnings)

The other one that is on top of my head right now (lunarlux cosmic clash)

Breath of Fire IV goes on my long list of JRPG's I started but never completed on the Playstation 1 (looking back I just didn't see many games to completion on this console despite liking them). I saw it got a recent release on GoG which was great news to fans and I hope it finds its way to Steam as well. From this soundtrack I found myself enjoying "Opening Animation". Curiously though, the soundtrack for the game can be found on Steam.

That LunarLux track was a surprise. Had to listen to more and I'm going to have to pick "Battle VS Mad Scientist" for me.

Bof iv is good, but some parts can be grindy as well (especially if you want to 100%), so i kinda understand why. Iirc i did all but the fishing minigame in my second playthrough. I wish it also come to steam, but id rather play it on gog if they have achievement to 100% the game, hahah. And i also like the opening one! It is just that whenever i remember bof iv, endings and beginnings song is the one that is playing in my head :)

And most lunarlux tracks are generally good (i planned to buy the soundtrack when youtube fails me and give me tons of ads when i was doing my weekly run as an alternative), glad you like them! Cosmic slash was the most memorable to me because it is the bgm for the first boss fight and i had to spend hours listening to it because it takes that long to beat it (i dug my own grave and played the hardcore mode, hahah)

That track from Conker's Bad Fur Day was ironically, Rock Solid. Back from the good ol' days when Rare was on fire with their games. It also begs the question, Microsoft, why won't you put Rare Replay on PC?

Disco Elysium will always hold a special place for me, as it was the first CRPG I was able to beat. I've tried many over the years, but this one was one of those games where I knew it would be different from the get go. Now that I'm older and wiser (jury's still deliberating on the latter), I've been able to go back and experience some of the older games in the genre to relative success. From the OST, I'm going to have to pick "Whirling-In-Rags, 8 AM" as a favourite.

It's rare for me to listen to game soundtracks outside of while playing, but these three songs have all spent time in my car's playlist rotation over the years. 🙂

Blues Saraceno - Evil Ways (Justice Mix) - from Rebel Galaxy
Oscar Brittain - Once A Dead Man - from Desert Child
Mike Raznick - Squiggleville Plains - from Super Fancy Pants Adventure

Won Rebel Galaxy on here and it's one I hope to get to soon. The song reminded me of the one used in the intro for the first Borderlands.

That Desert Child track is funky. Love the saxophone.

Didn't think I'd be adding a song from a game called Super Fancy Pants Adventure to my playlist, but here we are. Really liked that one.

I woke up almost facepalming that I had forgotten what a huge impact Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas had on me. One of my favorite things about those games was the music, and through mods I had expanded the radio playlists because part of me had fallen in love with big band and swing. The original songs were fantastic while playing, but were admittedly a bit dated outside of the games, so I sought out more modern remixes and even went through a huge electro swing phase.

So... this one's a bit of a cheat since it's not the original soundtrack song, but I absolutely love this:
Kay Kyser - Jingle Jangle Jingle (DJ Sonny Tribute)

Bonus, simply because it's awesome:
Big Iron - A Fallout New Vegas music video

Hey I've got a Fallout 4 radio playlist saved, despite only ever playing New Vegas for the same reason.

I'm going to cheat as well (hey you started it!), but only because it's the first time I've seen someone mention electro swing. Just can't leave without mentioning the artist and song that got me into the genre.

Okay, to soften the blow of the cheating I'll plug the end credits to Ape Out.

I have a long list of video game music that I keep in my head. If I had to choose one, the one I keep coming back to is Battle Hymn of the Soul from Persona 3. It's a song that uses a motif from another, more common song in the game that plays at a peaceful time, so the flip side of reversing the use of this motif in a more intense and hostile environment sells the situation that things are dire. Both song itself and its timing in the game is immaculate.

"The Arcana is the means by which all is revealed."

I played Persona 3 Portable way too much when I was younger. The Shin Megami Tensei series and its parallel Persona games are pretty much all great and there's such a huge variety to choose from. I started off with Devil Survivor on the DS from a GameFly rental, tried out Persona 3 Portable afterwards because I liked it and wanted more SMT stuff, and I've rarely been disappointed with anything I've played since. Persona 4, Persona 5, Persona Q, SMT Devil Survivor 2, SMT 1 on SNES, SMT 3 on PS2, etc. etc. Great gameplay, often great soundtracks, and a whole lot of playtime to keep you occupied.

But yeah, P3P was one of my earliest entries into the world of SMT, and though I've had trouble replaying it these days because I've played it to death, I still love it unconditionally. I hope to someday get Reload and I really hope that's enough to get me to finally replay it properly.

My journey was Persona 4 Golden --> Persona 3 Fes --> Persona 5 --> Nocturne. I would like to try the P3P at some point especially to learn about the FEMC part of the story. Nonetheless, aside from the music, I do like the Persona's combination of the calendar systems and the dungeon crawling RPG elements.

I think for me it was Devil Survivor 1, Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4 (PS2), and then... maybe Nocturne? It gets hazier after that, but I played through so many. Even played the SNES/Super Famicom SMT1 and absolutely loved it, which is surprising considering the age. Had some really nice tunes in there, like the Ginza theme.

I like the timing of Chiaki's theme in Nocturne; when it is first used, it illustrates her concern of her place in the new world -- overwhelming despair with a tinge of hope.

I haven't played SMT IV, but this just rocks!

Yesss, SMT IV has great music. So does Apocalypse its spinoff sequel. The Divine Powers battle theme is really good and The One Who Stands Against God is a great boss theme just for how it portrays the severity of the fight.

I beat my first Persona game earlier this year (Persona 4 Golden). I'll admit, my first experiences with the Shin Megami Tensei (which coincidentally was Shin Megami Tensei IV) and Persona franchise didn't quite land with me. Still want to give their respective series' another chance and have the other Persona games and SMT V on my waitlist.

I'm also liking this Persona 3 soundtrack more than Persona 4's. That battle theme was great and so is this song.

Liking this one's OST more as well. I'm fond of "Jazz" so this soundtrack is right up my alley. Trying not to listen to too much of it, since I plan to play this one someday. I was surprised to see they do reuse some music as well.

To be honest a lot of music i've heard through video games i definitely NEVER would have given a chance if I heard it randomly. An unexpected gift for sure. Some groovy jams off the top of my head. Tryna name some less obvious ones
EDIT:(Lol "less obvious" and the first 2 games i name are Expedition 33 and Halo)

Exp 33
"Monoco": https://youtu.be/TcEdif_2PNY?si=GKOcb88Cyl_boEPT
"Goblu" https://youtu.be/oeFkb3LsmlQ?si=Fy-pRX60XLAO5wsr
Too much of this game's soundtrack goes harder than it needs to.

Halo
Halo 1 OST- Covenant Dance https://youtu.be/YMKf6j-AFIQ?si=YvvzzPMvEfvNoJ6N
Try not to head bop by the minute mark. (drop is at like :54 seconds)
(love halos soundtrack. Marty Odonnell is my hero tbh)

Furi (Furi is dubsteppy, ravey, Boss rush game with some stellar accompanying music for each boss. Its usually like 2-6 dollars if you guys are looking to check it out. I can't help but get into the rhythm of every boss stage
FURI OST - Danger "6:24" (the tutorial boss lol) https://youtu.be/8QpUGCXwOks?si=yEuhNJXWF8SIsqmy

Dynasty Warriors just has some good stuff
Dynasty warriors 3: "March" https://youtu.be/BFdmPekyzEI?si=AnpJsYaQrxr560Tq
DW5: "Dance Macabre" https://youtu.be/hDmSoInmKaQ?si=zCkZ5oips7TivZUp

Shinobi (2003 Ps2)

Expedition 33 I plan to play at some point. It's not a matter of if with this one, just when. So I don't want to listen to too much of the soundtrack just yet, but loving the Jazz in "Monoco". I'll plug "Liquidity" here for no other reason than it's from the game Monaco and I have a caveman brain.

Took longer than expected, but we finally got a Halo mention! I've only just managed to beat the original trilogy in the past two years thanks to the Master Chief Collection, but I had listened to various tracks from the soundtracks since it's often recommended. I'm going to pick "One Final Effort"; just seems to have all the Halo themes in there.

Looks like there's quite a few good tracks in the Furi soundtrack. I liked the one you recommended and "My Only Chance" stuck with me.

I've never played a Dynasty Warriors game, but got the new one on my waitlist. Those tracks got me intrigued enough to explore, which brought me to Dynasty Warriors 4 and "Eve".

The new Shinobi game comes out in a few months and aside from having my eye on the game, I want that track they used in the trailer!

That Binding of Isaac track is, fittingly, anxiety inducing. Lots of interesting stuff in this OST, but I'm going to pick "Foreigner in Zeal (Flooded Caves)". Digging the ethereal vibes this track puts out.

The Hunt Showdown is just all vibes. I'll have to go with "Rise up Dead Man" from this one. Can easily see how if you like a track from this soundtrack, you'll probably like the whole thing.

I want to highlight two different indie games that are not super popular, but have so many great tracks.
Dicey Dungeons
Frozen Synapse
It was hard to pick just one song from each.

The Dicey Dungeons OST definitely punching above it's weight class. Couldn't help but checking a lot more on this one, but for now I'll have to pick "Fortune Favours the Bold". Love how free-form this one feels and how it just keeps changing as the track goes along.

Frozen Synapse I remember being curious about back when it came out, got distracted and the next thing I remember Frozen Synapse 2 had released as well. From the soundtrack, I'll have to pick "Triumph". Found it rather soothing and mellow.
