I'm not very good with computers so maybe this is a bit of silly question but I know there are a lot of computer experts here.
I play all my games on a big TV screen but lately I've bought quite a few games with subtitles that small I can only read them with binoculars. Making these games unplayable for me. Is there any way, setting or something to enlarge them?

Thanks in advance for your help.

unfortunately there isn't usually, that'd be far too sensible an option for most developers to think of. the best you can usually do is lower the resolution but of course that will also decrease the image quality

How would lower the resolution help? Of course I like a good image quality but now I can't play them at all. So play them in lower quality is still better than not play at all.

The higher the resolution, the smaller the image.

Ok let's give this a try tomorrow. I always thought the higher the better. Turns out I should go for lower. You mean only lower it in the game right? Not on my TV or both?

You can find that option in option -> video settings

You don't have to change settings on TV or computer screen

Yes they are extremely small comparing to the rest of the screen. I have a 60" screen (not small) and placed a chair right in front of it. The subtitles are still to small to read easily.
I will take your advice. Up till now I thought it was just me not knowing how to change this on a tv screen. In one of the games I already post it as a question about the game. The dev seems very helpful as he promised me to have a look at it and get back to me. But in a way you are saying it should be optional in game not just as a general setting in my pc or tv. I'm sorry to hear that as a lot of games are new to me but old for the creators. Well if I hear or learn something I will sure post it here. Thanks for your advice for now.

There are a few games that let you change the size of subtitles - unfortunately these games are pretty rare.

You can enlarge them by 6 inches in 10 days with some natural pills. It's all real !

That's a real issue, had it first time with Telltale's Game of Thrones. It's impossible to read subtitles if you play on TV.

Most of the games are fine. Big screen and chair right in front of it. But a few are just so incredibly small!

Dev's should think about this as more and more people are playing from their couch. But well, not every platformer has contoller support yet so I'm afraid it can take a while.

What resolution is your TV? The size of text on a 1080p TV should be LARGER than a 1080p monitor. If you have like a 4k TV just try turning the resolution down.

I have never ever looked at resolution till 2 days ago. Not sure I understand the concept. I don't have a 4k tv and I will see tomorrow if I can figure out the resolution of my tv. As far as I know you can chose it yourself. Never know what to chose on TV or when a game starts so usually a just press ok and start with the default settings. If I understand your comment right I have to lower the resolution on my TV AND in the game? Correct me if I'm wrong.

If the game lacks a resolution setting (e.g. Serena), then this should be before you launch the game. Click Start button, type reso, select Change the Screen Resolution. Try 1280x720.

Most games however do have such a setting, so try there first.

I've set the resolution in game to 1280 x 720. There is a slightly improvement. Still very small but with a dining chair just in front of the TV it can be read. This game better be incredible to get me out of my very comfortable gaming relax chair :).
Thanks for all your help.

Maybe also try custom font scaling. Click Start button, type dpi, select Make text and other items larger or smaller, in the window that opens, click the "set a customer scaling level" link, then try 200%.

costum font is only for win OS.
it shouldn't effect the games.

It sure affects applications, and games are applications, so worth a try even if it's a long shot.

i'm pretty sure it affects apps that use the OS settings. most games have unique fonts and settings, by their nature...
but it could work on some games.

Now only a CRT monitor is needed to absolutely burn the image into one's eye :D

well, games were made for a monitor. at close distance to the player.
room games (or TV, xbox etc.) have large subtitles cause they assume the player is further away.
i'm guessing contacting the devs won't help as much. most players play near - actually too near if you ask me.

you can change the resolution like suggested above.
or take the couch closer to the TV. it will feel like I-MAX ;)

edit: most games have in-game setting for resolution. you need to change that, not the OS resolution.
feel free to add me on Steam if you need help

The last paragraph is a very good point. Although screen resolution can be set by either the OS or by a game, games override whatever the OS has set, so there's no point setting anything there unless the game has no settings at all (which is rare, but happens - I just played a game called Serena which lacks any settings).

I've taken the advice to set the in game resolution to 1280 x 720. They can be read now with a chair right in front of it. Still very small and unfortunately the overall look of the game was more effected than the size of the subtitles. But I can give it a go now. Thank you for your advise.
