I love sci-fi movies a lot, aside from sports(motivational) movie.
My favorites are 2001: Space Odyssey, Pi, Aliens, Moon, Stalker, Matrix Series, Solaris, Ex Machina, Gattaca, Contact, Sunshine and K:PAX.
Don't recommend me superhero movies cause they obviously falls under sci-fi. genre.
I want something pure sci-fi like one of my friend recommended Primer. Not as complex as that but something understandable.
As you can see through my favorites it dates from 1960's till now.. but they might be mainstream, so I might miss some.
Oh plz god dont say interstellar. Its not that good sci-fi as regards to other, but I like that song. I like other song too Brain Damage, I guess facebook doesn't like this name (funny story I'll post it on comment)
EDIT : I forgot about Brazil
And for Anime Steins;Gate

Thanks to MaxThunder for the sponsored GA

EDIT 20th May 17: As some members have asked to create a public list. I have created a list on IMDB which consists all the movies recommended by the community.

Note: The list contains Feature Films, TV series & movies, Anime & series. This list might contains some movies that can't considered as sci-fi movies. This is just a list of recommended movies, you might have to filter out which movie might fit for you. I haven't filtered out any recommendations from members on the list, but I might have missed some of them because I couldn't find its link.

I don't know why you prefer Dark city more... you might have some reasons, I've watched both movies but I prefer matrix more.. not their sequels but matrix only. It is followed by Animatrix (which doesn't fall on the trilogy), then only reloaded and revelations.
I want to recommend it to you.

Maybe because I've seen Dark City first. So matrix didn't was so surprising to me, It felt like a Dark City ripoff.

When I saw the awful sequels, well. That killed matrix to me. ANIMAtrix was great thou

Influence [edit] Edit wiki-text]
Despite the very moderate box office, the "Dark City" became one of the iconic films of the 1990s. That's what the online resource allmovie says about this:

Who loves stories straight and rooted in reality, should avoid this film, but for those who have nothing against mixing entertainment with metaphysics, "The Dark City" is one of the most underrated films of the 1990s. [6]

The influence of his artistic decision and philosophical problems is felt in the "Matrix", which was filmed in the same Sydney scenery a year after the "Dark City". [1] According to Ebert, "The Dark City" embodied the effects that the "Matrix" creators sought, only earlier, with great sense and imagination

I think that the movie is really good. There are not comparison with the books, obviously... But still deserve some praise.

Regarding book/movie adaption, I think at most time it always will be what user came upon first either book or movie (In my view). My first cross experience was The Martian. I read the book first and watched the movie later. I loved the book more. I watched Schindler's list first and read the Schindler's Ark later. I loved the movie more.
I think each crates how book/movie would flow, hence killing much of the expectations regarding the story itself.. each moving on each other loses all the plot, the excitement it tends to create..

But my preference would be books at first.. that builds the imagination in respect of you. The Martian by Andy Wier VS The Martian by Ridley Scott (One of my favorite director) made me think no matter how good the Director is it won't match your exception in most of the cases.

Hey, psst, "Firefly". Space+cowboyish chracters, shake, not stir, perfect combo.
Maybe some "Hitchhiker's guide to galaxy" for fun time? Brilliant (the book(series actually) is better though).
"Moon" (2009 movie) for some serious mood?
You'll probably like "Dark city". Some of the scenes might look familiar because they were used in matrix afterwards.
Speaking of Matrix, you'll probably like "Nirvana".
The last one I can think of is cyberpunk (still sci-fi right?) movie "Johnny mnemonic".
Bonus if you're into anime and cyberpunk "Ghost in the shell", don't know if movie is any good, but anime was for sure.

Supernova
Mission to Mars
The Last Days on Mars
The 5th Wave

Okay, you look like you like sci-fi concepts and atmosphere. So here are a few selections I think you may like, that seem to fit the caliber of what you state you already like. Trying to avoid anything too pop-culture insane sci-fi, you seem to prefer more cerebral interesting idea sci-fi stuff.

Must Sees (great concepts and executions):

  • Gattaca (I think my #1 pick for you, based on what you already like)
  • Starship Troopers (only the first one)
  • Fifth Element
  • Dark City (very Matrixy)
  • Johnny Mnemonic (even more Matrixy)
  • Blade Runner
  • Akira
  • Watch Star Trek in general. I prefer Next Generation / DS9 over the others myself. Original is decent. Voyager can be good in places too. Movies can be hit or miss.
  • Close Encounters of the Third Kind
  • Donnie Darko. It's odd, but stick with it. "Love it" or "hate it" kind of movie
  • Enemy Mine. Absolute masterpiece, but get's overlooked a lot as "Sci-Fi", but fantastic really.

Decent Picks, you may well enjoy, or might not:

  • District 9
  • Moon
  • Minority Report
  • Hackers
  • Logan's Run
  • Bubblegum Crisis / Bubblegum Crash. anime OAV, dystopian cyberpunk with some Super hero overtones.
  • Giant Robo. anime OAV. Very nostalgia/classic anime look. Heavy politics and mature themes. Less about robots, and more about humanity and themes around free clean energy for humanity, and the pitfalls it may cause.
  • Patlabor 1 & 2. Another anime. Great sci-fi and concepts. More about politics and direction of humanity conceptually.
  • Galaxy Quest. An absolute must if you have ANY affection for Star Trek at all, in any form.
  • Artificial Intelligence: AI
  • Fight Club. Not sci-fi at all, but heavy conceptual movie. Seems along the lines of idea exploration that the movies you cite seem to give.
  • Westworld (HBO TV). Quite interesting as Sci-Fi, not really a cowboy show really...
  • The Martian
  • The Lawnmower Man. Seen it stated earlier by someone else, but be sure to check out the "Director's Cut" version, it's longer and fills in a lot more sci-fi interesting stuff to the story. The DC version i think turns the movie into a proper sci-fi movie, rather than a thriller with sci-fi overtones.
  • The Day The Earth Stood Still. Still a classic
  • Looper
  • 12 Monkeys
  • Abyss. Pretend the water/ocean is actually space and this as sci-fi as it gets.
  • Equilibrium. Action heavy with gun play, but also heavy concept dystopian future.
  • Groundhog Day. Not strictly sci-fi, but great concept classic. Time loopy interesting theme.
  • Powder. In more current time and on our planet, but takes on themes of evolution and human/mental potential stuff. Really good movie, fits for the kind of movies you state (high concept explorations).

Some more TV type picks:

  • Battlestar Galactica (Newer remake). Treat the first 2 hours as a stand alone movie, it was built that way. Use that to decide if you want to watch the rest of the series.
  • Firefly. Great characters.
  • Dune (The Sci-Fi Mini-series, not the original movie)
  • Fringe. Brilliant series, blows X-Files out of the water in my opinion. While X-Files teases, Fringe is a veritable orgy of Sci-Fi ideas embraced whole heartidly
  • Black Mirror

As far as sports motivational movies goes, if you have not seen "Rudy", you may as well murder yourself. That is my favorite sports motivational epic. :p

  • Short Circuit. Cheesy 80s comedy, but also pretty decent.
  • Batteries not included. Also an 80s comedy, but interesting
  • The Explorers. Kids sci-fi from 80s, but good stuff.
  • The Last Star Fighter. 80s, a bit cheese, but I love it.

They are good. It did lose some momentum. They were milking things too much.
I remember the creators talked to a Hugo winning sci-fi author, and he told them that all good sci-fi wasn't about milking an idea, it was about diving in and searching for new ones. They sort of had a writing refocus in the last couple seasons. Whether you'll like it or not, not sure, but in my opinion it did get good again.

I don't know what Stranger Things is if not an ode to 80's scifi movies :p Granted, it's more horror focused but it's still very scifi themed. I highly recommend Black Mirror, it's one of the best shows out there.

And Better Call Saul is amazing! I really enjoyed iZombie as well but I stopped watching after the first season. I only watched the first couple episodes of Outcast but that seemed pretty good as well.
