For an opposing opinion, I found the first two to be abysmal- buggy, clunky, shallow, repetitive, and all-around unpleasant to play- while the current one is, from what I've seen, far more accessible, polished, immersive, and engaging.
Likewise, I disliked the original Tomb Raider games for similar reasons, while the remake series is an even bigger step forward from its predecessors than Max Payne 3 is from its own.
Inevitably- unless we're talking franchises like Assassin's Creed- styles will eventually change. Much like with how a majority seem to view Dark Souls 2 as the worst in the series, while a minority claim the opposite, stylistic changes often end up being more a difference in who they appeal to, than of overall improvements or declines. Which isn't to say that some games aren't just failures under more objective considerations [like, say, Lara Croft: Temple of Osiris, which is buggy to the point of unplayability], but that generally, what you're venting about is dissimilarity, rather than negativity.
This, of course, is why it's always important to carefully review games before purchasing :glances at the URL bar: or otherwise acquiring them. Compared to a few decades ago, information on games is readily accessible and often deeply in-depth. Sometimes there's no avoiding getting a disappointing game- some things can't really be (dis)appreciated unless encountered first-hand, but it's usually a great way to determine things like, say, if a game has introduced lengthy cutscenes into its franchise. ~.^
(P.S. All the things you mentioned sound great to me, and are elements that contribute to the improvements on the things I found weak in the original games. It is what it is~)

Story is mostly acceptable. There is one chapter that reminds me good old max payne - and I loved it (but I don't know how much you have played so no spoilers).
Shooting - yea, probably best in whole series.
What I hated in this game was "shooter on rails" parts. Just who thought that it was good idea to put them there?

in chapter 5 now. man so much self pitiful talk, i never thought this would annoy me so much. still he talks every shit, they overdone mp character this way, also i miss the small details like the bumps the tvs etc. the game is heavily linear too, mp was never complex but not this linear.
worst title in the series for sure. too bad, i really love the score so far but as expected this is just not feeling like a badass mp game.

im nearly though it now, shows how annoying and boring it is when i left off a game and play later on!
more points which suck so hard
this game PISSES ME SO OFF! i thought it would get better but to watch 5-10 minutes cutscenes between chapters and the level structure like this:
walk -> cutscene -> shoot 2-5 guys -> cutscene -> shoot 3 guys -> cutscene -> walk -> railshooterscene -> cutscene -> walk -> cutscene -> shoot 8 guys -> long cutscene and so on.
wtf?! i already had no fun and wanted to quit after chapter 7 but i dotnt like unfinished games and i didnt want to accept that it gets worse and a beloved series's fell to shit!
thanks rockstar and remedy for fucking up MP3, all those praising reviews are just garbage and were on a hype train or dunno what max payne was about!
too bad, some moments were nice (especially the new york onesI) and the soundtrack is great!
SPOILER summary of MP3 and its gameplay
Chapter 1 - end
walk -> cutscene -> shoot 2-5 guys -> cutscene -> shoot 3 guys -> cutscene -> walk -> railshooterscene -> cutscene -> walk -> cutscene -> shoot 8 guys -> long cutscene and so on.

how do i start? yes my topic title is very provocative!
i started with MP1 since it was first announced with all the previous game art (different enemies on motorcycles etc.) and pushed back all the way. then it came out and it still blows me away, i just love the style, the lone cop, the comic strips, the whole gameplay! AWESOME!
i also love the realistic artstyle and scanned graphics.
MP2 was for me a letdown, as far as i remember (i only played it once, unlike MP1 which i played multiple times!) the story was very bland for me and i didnt like the whole progression, still gameplaywise it was great.
MP3 i play it some hours now and it just pisses me off!
the shooting mechanics are maybe the best in the series, i really love the details etc. but:
the score however is really tight so far! i love it. again i also love the shooting, when you dont fucking watch another cutscene..... yeah i accepted (but hate the decision) that they removed the comic strips.
i know that opinions get bashed nowadays against AAA games but i wanted to let it out!
EDIT
im nearly though it now, shows how annoying and boring it is when i left off a game and play later on!
