Like, I'm asking seriously. I follow indie games quite decently, but had never heard about this game before. It has only a month, and in this month acquired more reviews than some very popular indies, like Into the Breach or Dusk. Did a streamer play it? How is it so popular? It doesn't even look like anything special, just a mobile-tier "mow down masses"

Oops, I actually linked to the wrong article... The one I was looking for was this one:
https://www.vice.com/en/article/z3nyze/how-vampire-survivors-went-from-obscurity-to-27000-people-playing-at-once
But you can get from the first one to the second, I guess.

Yep, got to the Vice article, and that told me the whole story, so I don't mind

I was looking at the screenshots in the game and was like "Man, this reminds me of that game Magic Survivor that I played a while ago." Then read this article and it said it was an inspiration, which is neat. A more frequently updated and less badly-translated version of Magic Survivor sounds right up my alley. Thanks to OP for making me aware and you for the article!

It looks like a riff on Crimsonland and half the other games 10tons has been making for almost 20 years now.

Is like injecting liquid meth-cockayne into your eyeballs.

SplatterCat and NorthernLion both shone a spotlight on it early after the game's release and definitely propelled it headstrong into the indie game scene. I assume a ton of people enjoy the simple yet satisfying gameplay loop (myself included). Its price point, equivalent to a coffee, definitely helps attract people to at least try out the game.

It's good. I bought it yesterday, and logged six and a half hours. If you're just starting out, you should know it's to your advantage to use the whip from below the mobs, just like in Castlevania.
