And the (sort of) sequel just released : A Bird Story.
They also have some more free games not on Steam, worth checking out.

+2 for Fallouts, +3 for Planescape: Torment, +100 for Sanitarium(sick adventure game!) All of those good old games with great story. I'd also add Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura, Anachronox. The first Deus Ex. There are actually many and more old games that still are very entartaining ;)

Yeah, the first Deus Ex is a must if you need a good plot. I was amazed how variative it is and how your choice really matters. For example, you can kill almost every major plot character and see the consequences. Or save {SPOILER} from seemingly sure death.

What kind of games do you like? FPS, point&click adventures, action, indie etc. ?

Also, Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy, Portal, Portal 2, The Stanley Parable, The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us.These have low requirements and great stories.

Fahrenheit - aw yiss! I have this game somewhere. Not a usual adventure game, rather one of the new breed with QTE and such. But Fahrenheit always reminds me of other amazing supernatural adventure game series - Post Mortem and its sequel Still Life. I have both, and can attest to them having very good story. Haven't played Still Life 2, so can't say a thing about it.

The Walking Dead series is pretty awesome, and has relatively low system requirements.

Few games make you care so much about the fate of a collection of pixels ;__;

Prey (2007)
A very underrated game with a badass/f*cked up story, innovative epic gameplay and superb graphics for that time, runs on a calculator.

You can't find it in the Steam store though. Its gift is a collectible now.

I second recommending PREY. You can find them for 4 keys ($8) on steamtrades or buy a key from an online store, which will activate on Steam.

System Shock 2 (Horror FPS), Deus Ex (Sci-fi FPS/RPG), Planescape Torment (RPG)

Yes, yes and yes! System Shock 2 is in truth a FPS/RPG with a horror touch :P And - a thing that many people don't know - spiritual father of Bioshock series :)

I'd probably go for the old RPGs. You know Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter nights, Planescape Torment, etc.
