This shocked me. I have never looked at it that way. Why it is so scary? Because it is exactly the ways organizad crime (i.e. mafia) works. And don't forget all encryption mechanisms made in US are nationalized for quite some time.

Yes. Everything that has something to do with privacy is bad. It supports pedophiles, drug dealers, the mafia and TERRORISTS! That's why. And before you ask something else: no nothing else has to do with it. Hail the land of the free!

Don't forget that US have a way of imposing their laws on other countries. The service may be safe for now, but there's no way knowing if, or rather when they put hands on your data.
If you think of it, there is more commonality between US gov and mafia. Manning, Assange, Snowden are examples made to threaten general population. It's a signal that if you know of criminal activity within federal government, you should be silent about it, or you will be treated as traitor and terrorist. The difference between this and 20th century mafia is that mafia broke legs, while gov breaks lives.
I fear we may observe some new form of totalitarian government being born right in front of our eyes. Taking away personal freedoms and nationalizing every aspect of life is not a democratic way, isn't it?

Over here all telephone/email communication as well as every site you visit is monitored and recorded. The question is, is it spying or protecting the national interest ?

Because there are no spies from Brazil or Mexico. They do zero spying. No other country spies. Only the US spies.
