I've been considering a few options, but I'd like some spontaneous suggestions. Durability and ergonomics are my primary concern, so please comment on those you've used for a while, if possible.

Your input on any I should avoid is equally valuable, so don't be afraid to bash the crappy ones.

Edit:
Thank you all for your input, turns out we're all on the same page, more or less. I'm torn for 1st and 2nd place, but I didn't change my shortlist contenders after your responses. I'm on the right track. :)

My shortlist

  1. Microsoft XBOX 360 Wired
  2. Logitech F510
  3. Razer Onza TE

I use the standard wired xbox 360 one for my laptop. Works fine, costs about 30$, instantly compatible and a good build.
Do not get any knock offs, the build quality is always unknown. Spend the money now on a legit one so you wont have to later.

The d-pad gripes have made me reconsider it. It was my 1st choice...

My choice also. I couldn't imagine playing games like Assassins Creed, Sleeping Dogs or Deus Ex HR without it.

I use the Logitech F710 (the "official" big picture controller). Never had any issues with it for over a year.

EDIT: I also use a PS3 controller emulated like a 360 controller as mentioned below. I usually give this to a friend and keep the F710 as my primary however.

I'm leaning towards the F510 (don't much care for wireless). How are the analog sticks holding up?

Xbox 360 controller.

Or PS3 controller emulated as Xbox 360 controller.

this. i use my ps3 control emulated as a 360 controller and have had no issues. with motion joy you can also change things around and set custom set ups for games that don't use game pads normally or for emulators.

Yeah, I'm actually going to have to say PS3 controller (which I'm using) over the Xbox360, because of the Dpad.

I'd also say Xbox 360 controller. Have two wireless ones connected to the official wireless adapter and never had any problems

^This, absolutely no problems with any Game and most Games come in with preconfigured settings or work only with the 360 controller

Alas. I would have recommended the Razer Onza TE if your budget limit was only $10 higher. It's like the typical x360 controller, just better in just about every way except for wireless capability.

Maybe the non-TE edition is for you, if you don't mind lack of button backlighting or adjustable stick tension.

I was actually ecstatic when I saw that one. I later went on to read how the adjustable analog sticks were worthless after about a year of use. I can actually get the Razer Onza TE as cheap as an official Xbox 360 here (~35€), but I'm skeptical.

One thing I've learned about reviews commenting on build quality is that very often the people who complain that something broke were completely mistreating their stuff in the first place. Throwing their controller around, stepping on it, forcing things when they shouldn't, etc. As for the adjustable tension, yes the actual adjustment... things are kind of tricky to operate without feeling like you're going to break the damn thing, and I haven't had my onza for a long time, but I'm personally confident in its build quality. There is also the option of getting the non-TE version which shouldn't have that particular problem.

P.S. the programmable shoulder buttons are fucking amazing. Goes a long way towards making some tasks in games so much easier, like inventory management in Dark Souls.

P.P.S. There's of course no wireless, and the cord is fucking loooooooong.

Cmon, you're making it harder, I was trying to pass it by. Did I mention it'd cost me the same as an official MS 360 controller? :)

Okay, if you want to pass it by, here something: It actually looks like complete ass close up unless you get the ME3 edition with its grid pattern design; which is basically sold out everywhere as far as I'm aware.

Logitech F710/F510/F310 depending on what features you want (wireless + vibration, just vibration, neither, respectively).

The F510 is my top choice atm. Unless I go for the official Xbox 360 or someone suggests a better wired controller with rumble out of the blue.

I own 2 F510 and 1 F310 and I can confidently say that they are awesome

I've had my 310 for several months now. I wish I had a longer time of ownership to go off of, but I've had no problems out of it, though it hasn't been subjected to heavy use the entire time. I take care of it, don't drop it or the like, but I'm pretty rough with the left stick in particular, generally, during use, and it's held up fine.

Durability was one of my main criteria when I purchased it. Based on reviews, the only problem I saw mentioned more than once, I think, was the occasional unit having the wire go loose and losing connection where it connects to the controller, and it may be the only problem I saw given at all. I assume it's a common defect from imperfect manufacturing processes and occurs at a predictable rate. A new one is likely to be under warranty if you encounter it, or you can do like I did and pick up a refurbished model for $15, free shipping, and be assured everything is in perfect working condition.

From what I gather, the XBox 360 controller is probably the best you can get, but cost and the fact I don't care for the left stick/pad layout means I went with this, and from what I've seen and experienced, I'd say it's probably your best bet for a PS-style controller for PC.

Edit: It also has a switch on the back for toggling between DirectInput and XInput, so you don't need any other software or anything for games that want an XBox controller.

Thanks for the extra info. To be honest, my main fear with the Logitech F series is the PS layout and the frequent mention of deadzones after heavy use... I'll try and get my hands on a used F510, see how it feels.

Buy gamepad for 5$ with vibration and cable. After using it for some time, you will better know, what you want personally ;F
