I believe all the involved trades are reversed.

IF you both traded for inventory items at the same time (your gift or TF2 / CSGO keys for his gift), then you can bug Steam Support for the return of your own items, and they will. They will probably be grumpy, but with the fact that even trade forums exist on their own site, they will help people scammed through it.

In the FAQ they seem to indicate that this is a "one time only gesture of CS goodwill" though, so there's a chance they'll use this loophole to deny a refund should a similar case happen again (which IMHO is bullshit, their user should never be penalized if they traded for it following all the system they put in place).

On another note, are TF2 key trades safe? Have there been any cases of TF2 keys being revoked?

If you traded for the items in the Trade Window, then yes. You can get your items back. If you traded with his "friend" for his items, I mean he said that give the items to my friend, and then you get the gift, then nope. If you traded keys / HB links / Desura keys / Origin keys etc., then you won't get them back

Just make sure you'd be happy with it if the second trade never happened. Don't put up something as collateral unless you are also willing to trade that thing for the other three copies. Otherwise, if your collateral is too good, they could just keep it.

I was traded a copy of Rust that was purchased via CC fraud and received nothing back since I gave the guy $20 in BTC.
