i wonder why people give their games away but in this case it's to tempt people into buying dlc - which is fair - thanks for the info
to revive a game (multiplayer)
to grow as a company or gain followship for future projects .
to build hype for a sequel
to profit from microtransaction
and there is alot of more reasons why .
I can't speak for anybody else, but I've been considering making a game and giving away several copies of it. My thought is that in giving a few copies away, 1: I'll receive more feedback so I can improve it in the future, and 2: Word of mouth will spread and get more people interested in buying the game.
For The Dream Machine: Chapter 1 & 2 steam page from what we can see the devs are likely giving it away for free so people try out the games chapter 1 & 2 to then buy the other chapters as DLCs.
Spend £10k on marketing or give away £10k in keys? No difference financially, much more goodwill from potential customers.
In addition to what others are saying, there is also the factor of trading card drops, with which the developer will be able to recuperate some of money from potential sales lost due to this giveaway. It's not as prevalent anymore given steam's more stringent approval processes, but shovelware games used to make all of their money off of this while giving away thousands of free copies.
That's the reason that games given away in free promotions on the Steam store don't drop trading cards anymore. Devs were abusing it.
Oh, I didn't realize they stopped cards from dropping on freebies. My bad.
Yeah, it's been that way for a while now. I can imagine that it had been a lucrative operation for crappy devs. Haha!
Not bad, people can try the first chapters to see if they are interested in buying the whole game.
This looks very interesting, thanks for dragging attention to it.
Thanks for this - I'll just have to remember when the time comes :)
Don't worry about missing out, this post will be bumped several times and multiple others will be created :)
I've been burnt so many times before... Now I just put it in my calendar with an e-mail reminder. Only way not to miss those... 👀
Maybe so but I'm not as frequent of a user on the site as I used to be. I just pop in again every now and then!
Put this page in your bookmarks as part of your daily's...Never miss one again! :)
This is actually really useful. Thank you!
Your welcome. I've been using it for years. To the credit of the OP he also included the link at top of this thread. :)
Oops. I’ve been smooth brained lately x.x
I actually won chapters 1-3 in 2015 (just after it was added to a Humble Bundle) and obtained 4&5 as well. I really liked the game-- for the most part-- but it kind of jumped the shark at some point, and I hear chapter 6 was more of the same. I never did pick up Chapter 6...I guess I should watch a video of it.

It's live now
It seems they also just added achievements, soundtrack and new content to the game.
aw, the achievements require you to purchase the rest of the chapters.
Maybe it's just me, but the full game bundle do not reduce the price of chapter 1 & 2 which I already have for free, lol
See my comment below
The rest of the game/episodes are available at a considerable discount in a bundle on the store page. I'd imagine that's a big part of the marketing strategy. Just remember if you want to take advantage of the bundle price be aware that there is a 30 minute to 1 hour delay between when you activate or claim a product on Steam and when the store recognizes that product is activated on your account and adjusts the package deal prices accordingly. Funnily enough the same time limit also applies for Steam trading cards saying "you have no more card drops" even though you haven't even played the game yet and then an hour later it will tell you "3 drops remaining" or whatever the number of drops it is for that game ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Not sure with this particular case if you actually have to buy the full season or at least one episode to actually unlock card drops though..still says no card drops for me even after hours a lot like F2P games where if you activate by a key you get the +1 and cards but if you just click the "play for "free" button you get locked out of the goodies????
I see.., there is a time delay, thanks for the explanation.
NP...noticed this odd delay some years ago when I was bargain hunting through steam sales and realized I could get anywhere from and extra 10-30% off of already heavily discounted games by double checking dev game bundles, series bundles, action bundles, etc that included games I already owned and the one's on my wishlist. Some of the games i'd just activated from keys elsewhere weren't showing up as owed in these bundles however yet when i revisited the store page some time later they had been recognized..
Whenever a game on steam from your wishlist goes on a good sale always double check on the store page and see if you can get it in a bundle package..half the time you'll get the game for dollars cheaper on top of the already discounted sale price. :)
good tip, thanks a lot
You're welcome :)
I noticed this as well but adding it to cart fixes it at least for me.
Interesting, I'll give that a try next time and see if it works for me too, thanks.
yeah, the store might still show the wrong price though but the price in the cart should be correct
Claimed it. Thanks!
i was missing the last two chapters which can be bought at a historical low right now so smart move by Cockroach Inc. :D
