Even while horribly received by the public.. Would half price warrant a playthrough for fans of the prior games?

And if anyone is wondering why it's because Zynga bought Echtra Games, the developers behind Torchlight 3.

As of now I think neither PWE nor Echtra said whether PWE will take over the development of the game and keep improving it or is the development of it just going to completely cease.

I tried Alpha and played on Beta for a while... never purchased full game because it was so bad. Theoretically, it can't get worse... But reading the reply before me... Zynga? That explains SO much.

For now, I'll wait and see if the reviews improve.

Nah... played for a few hours, 4-5 maybe, on xbox game pass some weeks ago and thought it was rather meh. Torchlight 2 is the first game I bought on Steam (preordered it, actually) and had lots of fun... I'm not sure exactly why I couldn't really get into T3 but I don't think I would even keep it if it was part of a Choice bundle. And that's probably the next step for Torchlight 3: getting bundled.

Well... for me, it wasn't a good game. There were some things that really annoyed me, but sadly, I don't even remember them. It's like, I forgot all about T3 as soon as I uninstalled the game. There are positives reviews on the store page so that means some people did find the game fun. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ But apparently the studio that was working on the game was bought by some company... so... not sure if Torchlight 3 will still be worked on. Probably not, I'd say.

Disclaimer: I played it on xbox game pass

It's an ok game if you enjoy ARPGs in general, it can scratch that itch. Not so much if you go in expecting Torchlight 2. Think of this as a separate game of the same genre and you'll like it. Combat is nice. The gear and skill system is good. Story is decent-ish for an ARPG. Not really much going for it in the end game to play more than once after you finished the campaign though. Perhaps not worth it for 50% off in that sense but maybe if bundled or 75% off one day it would be.

What makes it so different from Torchlight 2?

Torchlight 3 has weird contract system that plays out like a battle pass (except it isn't limited to days so no rush, just gain xp normally), it has a fort you can decorate and stuff (totally useless unless you like to decorate :P), it has an arguably (at least for me) better skill system but people probably prefer having more skills to choose from... I just prefer not being fucked over by picking the wrong skills :P, relics that puts extra skills that you get from armors, and better graphics.

What it doesn't have from Torchlight 2 is the mods (which does give TL2 quite a lot of depth and replay value), no optional areas/side quest areas making it very linear compared to TL2 (there are minimal side quest that you finish while doing the main quest with), no fishing, no gems and enchants (until the end of game which by that point you're basically done with little reason for a new playthrough), no stat points when you level up, just skill points (i dont really care about this personally but someone out there might)

I may have forgotten some thing or another but again you won't like TL3 if you go in expecting a better TL2. But you'd probably like TL3 if you like ARPGs in general and just want to play another.

Well, this sells it for me. As in, I have zero interest now in checking it out. Shame, I loved Torchlight II but seems like the sequel is way more linear - gameplay and exploration wise

Played a few hours on torchlight frontier (alpha version of torchlight III), and the game was not really good, torchlight and torchlight II were better imo, will wait to be bundle on humble or fanatical, or free on epic (Perfect World Entertainment already give 3 free games on epic : Torchlight, Torchlight II and Remnant: From the Ashes)

*I had sex with TorchLight I and it was a really nice experience. They were lovely hours but both of us were young and knew we had so many other things to try before going seriously with someone. Mutual respect, shared telephone numbers, and met each other more times, but that ended.

*The TorchLight II came out and fell in love with her, I really think our relationship could last for the whole life, you know what I mean: marriage, children and getting old together. But I am the kind of compromise fearing guy so I said goodbye to my love. She was understandably furious, but ended up understanding my point of view. It's too late now, but she knows I still love her.

*When TorchLight III came out I was ready to fix my life-long mistake, but this had nothing to do with my girl(s). She wasn't the daughter of the previous, not even a sister, this one must be a cousin from a far-away relative. Had dinner together, she tried to be interesting, funny, attractive and all that stuff. She knew I wasn't feeling completely comfortable, but continued trying, not in an agressive way, those were subtle and polite tries, something you respect from another person, but it wasn't enough for me. When we finished eating, she offered to give me a lift in her car, it was a nice car. She took me to a beautiful place, I have to admit. We talked for an hour more or less, then she got near and started kissing me. She was still beautiful, stroked me in a delicate way and had a nice perfume, I liked that smell. But this wasn't what I had felt with TL II, it lacked the natural chemistry involved in these things. I had to stop her. I thanked her for the lovely night and I got off her car while I thought I had seen a little and fast tear coming down her cheek. I knew she was a great person, but she wasn't The One.

I tested the original incarnation that was Torchlight Frontier for awhile. Originally it was an MMOARPG that was set to have a free to play business model but it changed due to various issues. Rather than scrapping things Echtra had to try and recover and create Torchlight 3 out of it. Max Schaefer and his team worked their asses off to try and bring something awesome to the Torchlight universe. It's really unfortunate that they didn't make Torchlight 3 from the start as it definitely would have been a much better and different game than what's there currently. With the recent purchase of the studio by Zynga their team will have to focus on a new game which is going to leave Torchlight 3 in a not so great state.

On a side note I wonder if Perfect World is going to give future development to Cryptic Studios or give it a studio like Gunfire Games. I'm leaning more toward Cryptic Studios rather than another.

I played it while it was still called Torchlight Frontiers. It started as an experimental Torchlight 2 mod but later they abandoned it. Runic Games wanted to work on a different project other than an ARPG game (they were also Blizzard North long before) and they went with Hob instead of Torchlight 3, even though fans wanted to see Torchlight 3 after the success of Torchlight 2. I completely understand that situation though, as developers they wanted innovation and Hob was a pretty different game. After the dissolve of the company, the IP bought by a Chinese company called Perfect World (makers of Perfect World MMO). Torchlight Frontiers was also an MMO and I guess after the pre-alpha and alpha feedbacks they decided to make it into a single-player game. Though if you played Frontiers, you will see how similar it is with Torchlight 3. Probably they thought using a known IP as sequel game would be more profitable.

Conclusion: It's not a good game, it's not from Runic and has almost nothing to do with Torchlight. Avoid even if it's free.

It was 8 years ago and sorry if I misremembered but it was shared by the official Runic account on Facebook or Twitter (cannot exactly recall where). Probably that is the reason I remembered it like that. Anyway, it seems my bad.

If you remember seeing it on one of those things I can see why you would think that. On the fansite thread you linked it mentioned that Runic gave them the okay to basically recreate the client. One of the coolest things about Runic was they showed a lot of love and support to the community. That studio had a lot of good people.

Ahh, I guess it's just my mind connected the dots with misinformation then (Between that mod and Frontiers). Though I do remember the excitement I had when I saw that project for the first time. Indeed they were great about everything as a studio. That love was mutual.

I played several hours thru gamepass. Having enjoyed the first 2 torchlights, I really wanted to enjoy the 3rd. But it was an absolutely souless MEH! game. Felt like playing the skeleton of an ARPG. I recommend Path of Exile if your looking for a way to scratch the ARPG itch. Free to play without the pay to win mechanics so many companies use for games.
