Not really, but people who care about puzzles look for them it in the Puzzles section. For you, doing it took only some moments and for you, it was obvious it was there, but others would have to expect to look for clues in every random comment that seems off. Nobody will do it since it takes way too much time and energy for little payoff.

That time the site was magnitudes smaller with a more close-knit community who put more effort into the forum life and generally had an idea when and how people added morsels. Now this is a site of 1million+ registrants where only a small fraction of people are still interested in the forums.

I very rarely spend time scrolling through the dozens of "Thanks! Happy Cakeday!" posts in threads like those three - it would be spectacularly unlikely for me to notice your post.

Forum puzzles can definitely seem esoteric to most users, especially new ones.

Oh hey, I saw that! :P
I don't think it was too difficult (though I do have a habit of obsessively hover over images to see what people put in their descriptive text), rather it was probably a combination of people not taking the time to go through the comments and hover, and people being not particularly interested in the game. I think it was a really cool idea for a hidden giveaway though. :)

Yay, I'm special~ \o/ haha
Is cool, for sure. :) Honestly, I'm thinking I might do something similar at some point since I have found myself with a surplus of old keys to give away but have been feeling too lazy to make a train. ^^ I wonder if now when people see your comments around the forums, they'll start automatically scouring them for hidden goodies. xD

I guess people do look for hints in pictures or at least really look at pictures ^^ It's always nice to find out that someone added a little text to a picture-link. Just not when they're hidden in the comments of other threads and where all you see are, more or less, variations of bumps, thank yous and cakeday wishes ^^
Still it was a nice idea :3
Oh and bump, because... maybe :3

First off, not sure if this better suits General category or Puzzles.
So I saw some cake threads and decided to slip in a little hidden giveaway that not everyone would notice. But I didn't really account for everyone not noticing it. I posted these 3 comments where I thought it would be pretty obvious I'm hinting at something. (see picture for what I mean)
But either I guess it was too hard, or no one wanted the game (Air Conflicts Vietnam)? Only 1 person got the link through sgtools, but they didn't enter or comment.
Don't people wonder why someone drags your attention to certain things like words by putting them in cursive. And with a word like tool start wondering enough about sgtools etc to check if the commenter at least doesn't have a private GA running?
And the cake is a lie in itself is already a bit of an implication there might be a double meaning to it. And then the descriptive (mouse over) text of the image that has a slash at the start, does no one make the connection to try that code in sgtools?
Some of the puzzles I've seen here get created made me want to bang my head against the wall, but was this too hard? :(
