So, the other day I won this Hacknet - Deluxe Edition GA. Key received, when I tried to activate it on Steam I realized that I already owned the game. I suppose that it was free or something, otherwise I can't see how could have I obtained it.

I asked in the comment section of the GA to reroll the winner, but the creator didn't respond. So I added him on steam, explained the situation, and got "прости но я уже ключ победителю отдал" as an answer. Which according to google translate means "sorry but I already gave the key to the winner".

Does that mean that, since I already revealed the key, he can't reroll? And if so, what can I do to escape the wrath of the steamgifts admins? I really didn't mean to do something "illegal" :(

Go here, ask a support member for a re-roll.

Only the GA creator can ask for a re-roll.

He can ask for reroll opening a ticket with the mods, but that would mean he's willing to take the risk to reroll a key that could have been already used by you (you know you haven't but he can't know for sure).
Maybe you could try opening a ticket yourself, but if he doesn't speak english coming to an agreement will probably be pretty though.

Plus, he doesn't seem a very active member of the site, so I'm not sure he'd be interested in the hassle. Let's see what the support says...

Screenshot your https://store.steampowered.com/account/licenses/ so he can read the date you got it?

I didn't know this page existed! Btw the support was super nice and said there's no problem at all, they contacted the GA creator and they'll sort things out

just don't mark it as received, and contact support about this issue.
you already asked the ga creator to reroll so there's not much else to do with him.

Submit a ticket in the "Other" category (since you've already tried contacting the giveaway maker) explaining the situation to support.
They'll lead you through the necessary steps to get it resolved.

Thank you, I tried this. I hope it will be resolved without consequences.

You're very welcome, and best of luck getting a speedy resolution.
More importantly, thank you for your honesty and not just keeping the game or re-gifting it. Much respect for that.

C'mon, we're talking about one of the best communities in the internet, I already feel kinda bad for being mostly a leech and having won much more games than I gifted. I'd like to think that nobody would do something like that :(

It's a fairly prevalent issue around here.
Just wait for one of those 1000 copy giveaways, and check the giveaway list when it ends. You'll see what I mean.

Besides, honesty should always be pointed out and appreciated, in my opinion. o7

Does it even matter? If you haven't won it here twice and you have a copy of the game you won here activated you shouldn't be actually breaking any rules, surely?
It's most likely a fault of the Steam API that allowed you to enter a giveaway for a game you already had in your library anyway, SteamGifts always has issues with packages/subs.

Since it was a three week GA, it's possible that I got a copy and activated it in the meantime

Yeah, but since some SteamGifts update (can't remember when) whenever you sync you should be automatically kicked from any giveaways for a game you already own. It's just that DLCs and (some?) packages/subs don't show up as owned.

Oh ok, didn't know that. Then it's possible that it's the fact that it's a "deluze edition"

and (some?) packages/subs

Any package/sub which includes at least one DLC, since the issue similarly relates to Steam not being able to send out DLC ownership data.
There's also a couple of other much rarer bugs- one involving the fact that DLCs which require other DLCs can obviously not have the prerequisite ownership verified by SG (as an extension of the first issue) causing the giveaways to be unable to be entered, one involving older "expansion" configurations on Steam (which happen so rarely that I've forgotten the details, but iirc they're treated as both a base game and a DLC, causing the weird issue where SG wants to check for prerequisite ownership but also can't properly do it), and the fact that publishers may misconfigure packages so they misreport their contents (typically meaning all a GOTY reports is the base game, which SG takes to mean that anyone with the base game owns all content).

Generally speaking, all one has to worry about is checking if a DLC is involved (namely, since all the other issues lock out entry entirely). If one is prone to such oversights, then [while signed into Steam Community] just clicking on the game image in the top left of any giveaway to verify you don't own it before entering is always a good step to take, if keeping your SG ignore list regularly updated as your library increases isn't workable.

Site exploitation (in the sense of winning things solely to resell them) is a real concern. Site rules require you to activate wins on your account, and staff has access to your sync history. Of course, since they can't check DLC ownership, there's likely no way they'd engage in any sort of enforcement on this kind of matter. Rather, the issue lies with the GA creator, for not knowing or caring that they need to add winners to check for previous DLC ownership.

In short, yes you'd be breaking rules but no, you likely wouldn't get in trouble for doing such. Past that, it's down to your sense of ethics.

I know it's too late for this time, but always do one last check that you don't own the game before revealing the key. As a GA creator, in the only revealed reroll I did the winner scammed me (they claimed they didn't use the key while they actually did), so I wouldn't be very enthusiastic to reroll a revealed key again...

As for the wrath of the steamgifts admins, as far as I know the site can't tell the difference between a game you already had and a game you activated from your win (and neither can sgtools), so if everything else fails, "receiving" a game you already owned shouldn't get you into trouble.

Happens alot with deluxe editions and such, why you just always check before hand and with 515 games it's not really hard to remember what games you have, up till 2000 i knew exactly what i had.
