This will be great as long as there is some moderation to the reviews. I've already voted down several because they were just random gibberish. One guy's "review" was just a bunch of number 8's typed over and over. This feature will just add more page clutter as long as Steam allows for posts like these.
Putting a "+1" as a review is pretty worthless too IMO.

Tongue in cheek or not it still isn't a review. It just adds to the clutter when trying to find a real review. There were other games that just had things like "w89e fuawf euaw poo poo" or "z0mg! This game rocks!" as the review as well. I want a review to describe the actual gameplay, let others know about any bugs and workarounds, things that actually qualify as a "review" and not just a bunch of spam.

Agreed. Reviews are supposed to help those that have yet to play a game decide whether or not they'd enjoy it. Reviews that consist entirely of in-jokes won't do them any good, and it's even worse when said jokes contain spoilers. -_-

**** yes. But did they increase character limits?
And since someone else decided to show off their reviews, might as well show my own as well

Damn. I've never had one quite that long, but I have had to trim one review by about 1200 characters, and a few others by several hundred. Its quite annoying.

I've talked about flaws in what I have reviewed, but really bad games I own, I just haven't played enough to give a proper review.

Seems ok, though I set my reviews to "public" it still seems to think they are "friend's only". Lets just hope the community pages dont get spammed by too many reviews now though!

It is a nice idea, i just hope it is not a Metacritic 2.0

Better but not perfect. I really hope the don't and numbers or starts or another points based ranking system. I think we all know how useless review scores are. I don't really even like the fact that I have to either recommend or not recommend. Sure, there are some games I recommend but I already wrote about them. Some games will only appeal to certain people and people need to read the actual text to see if its something they will like. You might see a bunch of thumbs up and buy the game not realizing that the top reviews were all super fan boys. The other issue is the voting. fans of a game very well might (a.k.a. absolutely will) down vote critical reviews keeping them from showing on the front page. Allowing others to see reviews is nice and the ability to edit is great but I'm not sure I'll right any reviews unless I feel strongly one way or another about a game.

Don't you think that games should be first and foremost reviewd on their own merit?
Comment has been collapsed.
I explain my opinion and then rate the game :P I'll try to create as more reviews as I can so people can hear more opinions :)
PS. I love how 60% of the people hated on my opinion on GTA IV and it's bad performance.
EDIT: I'll now explain the numbers with few words. Thanks for your feedback :)

I still wrote stuff for bad games, to explain they were bad.

Pfft, if someone didn't read my 'suggested' when it shows up on the store page, they have only themselves to blame.
Comment has been collapsed.
You see, Recommendations were counted on a store page of the game. Regardless who wrote what all a potential customer saw is that a whole bunch of people recommended, for example, Revelations 2012. And when a feature is called Recommendations you don't automatically assume that people would use it incorrectly and inflame a game's popularity rather than simply ignore it.

There is a little thing called research. I like to think that no one would think that number alone would make a game worth buying.
Comment has been collapsed.
Nothing wrong with how I used it. I let people know about the game.
Comment has been collapsed.
While it was true that only the 340 people there would see it on the store page, I've also linked my recommendations in the past in topics there those games have been referenced.

Why does everyone think I screwed up? Reading isn't difficult, and if people use only the number of people who talked about a game as an indication of quality, then they are foolish.
I used it to talk about games I played. Hell, I didn't even use it for really bad stuff. Each of the games I rated is playable, though they aren't without flaws, which is why reading is useful. The lowest score I would give any of those games is a 6 / 10 (using 5 as an average of quality, not 8).

Not everyone!
I don't think you did anything wrong.. if people don't read it.. it's their fault.. The only thing was that it wasn't public.. people in my friendslist recommend and just say "it's cool" or "it's awesome". Stuff like that is so useless :/
Comment has been collapsed.
It was not made to talk about games you played. It was made to recommend a game you liked to others, and you've been using it wrong. It's like singing a petition and leaving a comment that you disagree with said petition. The only problem is that the authors count only number of signatures and yours was counted for.

You can't read, and only want to be rude, is that it? Because I'm really getting that vibe from you after all of this.

I've been asking for this since 1998.

i posted my own ideas for how the mostly useless suggestion system could be improved a little over 2 years ago. glad to see steam doing something about it!

just saw your review on KotOR's store page :)
i think this new feature is pretty cool

I've always used the suggestion button as a review one lol

Funny how nobody here sees the negative side of this.
Just look at the Call of Duty: Ghosts page: Only negative reviews voted up because the haters are more persitent. Same can happen the other way round when fanboys downvote all legitimate criticism.
Or some chan-troll-armies will go and upvote only troll-reviews.
Or anybody writes a good review, get a lot of upvotes, and then edit it to "people who play this like it in the butt".
People who don't own a game shouldn't be able to vote in the first place. And editing a review should reset its votes.
Another idea of Valve that they didn't think through, just like Greenlight with all the "bribed" upvotes.

Well, his opinion was presented as a fact without any justifications. The only reason people call [current] Call of Duty a bad game is because it's pretty much the same as few previous ones with only marginal differences. What they tend to forget is that lack of technological breakthroughs and elaborate narrative does not make a game bad.

The very first game in the series, the one about World War II, was released almost exactly ten years ago. Are you suggesting that the series was bad from the start? Can you explain what made it bad?
Comment has been collapsed.
The COD and and BF4 series are a gaming concept from a decade ago. It's only bad for those of us who get bored playing the same game for ten years.
So yeah, Diablo for the FPS crowd.
Comment has been collapsed.
You're confusing two concepts. Being boring in and of itself doesn't mean something is bad, especially if it's an almost exact copy of a thing that you were enjoying few years earlier.
Unentertaining, unappealing, unexciting, monotonous are words you were looking for. But they have little to do with how a game is made, rather with how it is perceived.

Whilst reviews are never the deciding factor for me when buying a game they are a part of that decision. If i read a review, buy the game and then find out the review was bullshit I can air my view on that review the same should apply to those who decide not to buy a game based off of a review.
Comment has been collapsed.
Why? Review and score are different things. Besides you should never be allowed to give anything an arbitrary score without an explanation, and with an explanation there is no need in the score.

Awesome news today.
I sincerely had lost my hope in an improvement of the suggestion system, but now is much better and you can even review in other languages (I'll stick to English anyway). From now on I'll review any game I have played, while I had to suggest only the games worth 5/5 with the suggestion system.
You can even vote other's review, whohooo!
link
Still doesn't appear to be a rating system (like 1 to 5 stars), but seems planned.
