Giving isn't the cure for greed, it's actually the opposite. You take things you don't need, and then you realise you don't need them, but you still want them, so you start giving to give yourself an excuse to continue to get things you don't need, because hey, you're a good person, you deserve these things.
It's a well known phenomenon. When someone feels that they're doing something good they allow themselves to do other things which aren't, more than they normally would.

I wouldn't presume to know what is in people's hearts. People give for many different reasons. I do know, however, that the impulse to cling to one's possessions is countered by the habit of giving them away.

But can you truthfully say that most of those who give games on SG don't continue to feed their greed, even more than before? That at the end of the day, or the year, they will not have more games won and more games bought for themselves than had they kept out of gifting?
The same goes for life outside of SG. People normally give away their stuff not because they want to have less stuff, but because they want to have space for new stuff. The giving goes together with getting new stuff, feeding the greed, not with controlling it. Even those who buy to gift, part of their enjoyment is the buying, even if it's for someone else.
I would not say that it's true for all people, but I would say that it is likely true for most. I would say that most of those who gift a lot on SG , even those with a good gift/win ration, still enter giveaways for games they don't really need.

I don't know if we could say "most people" are like that. Sure, some are, but many are not. More to the point, my OP was not directed at such people as you describe. It was directed at those who actually wish to control their consumption rather than having it control them. Those people, the kind who want to keep their greed in check, are precisely the ones who might benefit from my post. I am not going to let the fact that some (possibly many!) people may not benefit from my reminder prevent me from sharing it with others who may.
The rain falls on the living and the dead alike, but only the living benefit from it.

Greed is something that sneaks up on you. You have needs, and you try to meet those needs, but it's easy to get caught up in the acquiring and forget to stop once your needs are met. Like a person who keeps on eating after he has filled his stomach, you can lose sight of your true goal. The cure for Greed is Charity, and so I make it a point to give as often as I can afford to do so. In giving, I am reminded that I can "let go" of wealth and it will not destroy my life. In giving, I am reminded that I don't really need that much to live and be happy. In giving, I am reminded that making others happy with worth more to me than any short-term enjoyment I might gain through consuming. If my battle against Greed were the only reason to give, that would be enough.
The truth, however, is that there are many reasons to give.
Let's be honest, though. Talk is cheap. What really matters is action, and I should practice what I preach. That being so, here [ended] are a few giveaways [ended] for those of you who frequent the SG [ended] forum. Enjoy. )
