Why would anyone pay for this when they can get the same thing accomplished on numerous websites for free?

The huge difference is that the App has a huge database with the number of supported players for each and every game. Those pages even list games like Half Life 1 as common games though it doesn't have a coop campaign. That is what the app does.
Additionally it can show you which of your games (or that of your friends) supports local multiplayer modes.
Try the free version and see for yourself. Though the free version is limited to three players. Cheers.
