Go for ONEplusone.
Top notch, with latest everything, 64GB internal memory and cost only 300€.
It is invite only for now but will be availiable to the public late June.
Not worth it spending 1€ more for anything else.
Do you research on it. Reviews are out.

Dang, that phone looks good. For $300, this is an amazing bargain, but is it durable?

Hmmm, I've pretty much got Ireland, the UK, Belgium, France, Germany, and the Netherlands covered, so I'm sure it'll be released in one of those.
I'll wait to hear general feedback about it though, wouldn't want to jump in and buy it just to discover it only works for 2 months

That phone is awe-inspiring. Too bad it's not waterproof/dustproof. :'(

I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 mini and I like it very, very, VERY much!
It shouldn't be too expensive considering the galaxy S5 is here..

Budget and carrier not important (I'm in Denmark, we don't get carrier-locked like some other countries).
Size-wise the Lumia 900 is too big (127.8 mm, 68.5 mm, 11.5 mm) - or at least it's too clumsy, but I reckon the size plays a big part in this regard. The Desire feels much smaller (119 x 60 x 11.9 mm) and as I said, fits perfect in my hand.
So, I want a phone that feels comfortable and not clumsy :)

Hmm there aren't a ton of good small phones unfortunately.
Sony Xperia Z1 Compact, Moto G, Moto X are the only ones I can think of that aren't giant. They're about as tall as the Lumia 900 but slightly narrower and thinner. Dunno if that'll be easier for you to grip.
There's also the Galaxy S4 Mini though it's kind of gimped compared to the regular S4.

HTC Desire is one of the best phones ever, I had a Galaxy S2 it broke like 7 months ago and went back to Desire, installed Jellybean from here and still happy with it's performance.
I don't think there's any replacement with the same durability of the Desire, at least of those made in the last 2 years. If I have to choose one I'll go with the Moto G, cheap and isn't huge.

Just about anything with an 8MP or better cam would be a worthy replacement, at least specs wise.
Personally I went with the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini as my upgrade from a Sony Ericsson Xperia neo from around the same times as the desire and I'm quite pleased.

I (still) own a HTC Desire HD, it's an epic phone and has never let me down :)

HTC One, either M7 or M8. Both are nice, but I prefer the M7 form factor. Best consumer level Android phones you can buy in the US. Check the reviews.

I wanted to jailbreak my phone to get rid of the built-in shit and Samsung have software called "Knox" now which marks your warranty as void (irrevocably atm) when you try to do anything like it. They really go out of their way to make you feel like a criminal for modding your own hardware. Pack of pricks.

I bought Samsung Galaxy S4 as my second touch-screen phone. Still got my HTC Desire S if I need it. And I have the same thing as you do, when I first got the HTC S, I thought that felt big compared to my previous phone. Then I upgraded to S4 and then it felt big. Then I bought Galaxy Note 10.1 and now S4 feels small :D Next I'm gonna buy a phablet.

I know your feelings with Desire mate, my first smartphone, got it in 2010 for graduating and would still use it even today if the battery would last more than 20 minutes of using. As for a new one? Well, I am stuck with some Xperia cr*p which somehow does the job but I am still mourning for my Desire.

I remember there was a lot of talk about battery life with the Desire, some people getting no battery and others getting plenty. Personally I never had any problems, often only charging it every other day. Little over 4 years later it still lasts a full day.

My phone is dead, so I probably need to get a new one. For now I'm back to my old HTC Desire.
I absolutely loved that phone a couple of years ago, and I'm very happy with it now. I might go and root it so I can use a new ROM and fancy stuff like that, but I'm thinking I'll probably need a new phone...
So which phone do I buy? I want it to be like the Desire :)
I've had a Nokia Lumia 900 with Windows Phone 7.8 for about a year and a half now, and I never liked it much. Picking the Desire up after this long was like coming home. The Nokia is too big and clumsy, while the Desire fits my hand perfectly!
So, yeah, find me a phone that feels like the Desire but is up to speed :)
edit
HTC Desire (119 x 60 x 11.9 mm, 135 g)
Nokia Lumia 900 (127.8 mm, 68.5 mm, 11.5 mm, 160 g)
HTC One (M8) (146.4 x 70.6 x 9.4 mm, 160 g)
HTC One (137.4 x 68.2 x 9.3 mm, 143 g)
Google Nexus 5 (137.84 x 69.17 x 8.59 mm, 130 g)
Samsung GALAXY S4 (136,6 x 69,8 x 7,9, 130 g)
Motorola Moto G (129.90 x 65.90 x 11.60)
OnePlus One (152.9 x 75.9 x 8.9, 162 g)
Can't believe the Nokia Lumia 900 is now considered a small phone. Almost all the phones you're suggesting are even bigger than this clumsy brick!
When I first got the Desire in my hands I thought "Damn, this is huge!", but I quickly got used to it. I thought the same about the Nokia, but never got used to it... So I'm more hesitant to go bigger now :)
