Just yesterday as I was trying to play Tomb Raider again, I had my worst case of motion sickness yet. In general, I get it about half of the time when I play that game, if not more often. It started quite recently, this year. Maybe because of the new games I've been playing, which look more real, but still fake enough to confuse the brain. Especially Tomb Raider has a lot of camera wobble and motion blur going on. Also, there are things like FOV and refresh rate to consider.
Other games guilty of that include Portal 2 and Fallout New Vegas.
I'm wondering, how common is it though. So vote away. Sorry for no Potato, But I realized that loving potatoes and having (or not having) motion sickness are not mutually exclusive.
Which games have made you ill? And is there anything special you have done about it? I'm considering buying travel-pills, not sure if they work, but they may.
Have a game that shouldn't make you sick, unless you're allergic to strategy.

Have you experienced sickness from games?

View Results
Yes, it's a problem.
No, never.
Only once-twice, not really an issue.

Never, and I'm glad :s Maybe VR could do it to more people?

Mostly ok, but I find a few games with narrow FOV settings unplayable.

It's unforgivable for a modern PC game (non-2D) not to have an FOV slider.

The Resident Evil series are bad, but the absolute worst of the worst - supreme winner of the Golden Diced Carrot is Jazzpunk. Didn't even manage a minute of gameplay before feeling chunderous.

Motion sickness can literally put me out of action for an entire day from some games - mostly, but not exclusively, older FPS games like Doom 1 & 2, Hexen etc. Half life 2 could put me on the floor in a few minutes - I seem to remember hearing it ran in a weird FOV. Most recently I couldn't get on with the new Hitman game of all things.

I did have some success with Ginger Root tablets an hour before I played, but it only held off the effects for perhaps 20 minutes longer than normal. I have heard of people 'training their brain' out of sim sickness by playing frequently, no idea if it's actually legitimately effective or not, because you know - the internet.... :/

Despite I'm usually affected by motion sickness in real life, I never felt it from games. But one friend of mine complained that he had motion sickness from Half Life 2.

I wasn't able to complete Portal 2 due to motion sickness. It became unplayable at the point where you had to use the bouncy gel (this was a while ago, forgive me, I forgot the name of it) because of all the bouncing that was going on. I really liked the game up to that point, but I couldn't play it in 10 minute bursts, because that's about as much as I could take of the movement. That is the worst case though, Tomb Raider is one of the few games that is not FPS that affected me, though only slightly. Most of the time I opt for third person if it's available, it helps a lot, even if the experience isn't as good (Looking at you, Skyrim!). Oh and one more thing, high FPS also seems to give me motion sickness more easily. I have an older graphics card so some games only run at about 30 FPS on high, but if I play on my friend's computer running the same game at 60+ FPS, I'll get sick. Not sure if it's relevant to everyone, but might be worth trying to cap your FPS if you can.

I feel your pain, it's why I can't play FPS. It's also why I play windowed mode because it helps with my field of vision.

Thanks grimmute, that is helpful. I did not know Vsync was part of the problem. It's strange for me. I had no issues with Fallout New Vegas, In fact, it one of my favorite games but, Portal 2 I can't play for more than just a short time and then I feel like I'm going to fall out of my chair.
Good topic!

The first time I got motion sickness was over 15 years ago, when I tried to play the demo of Drakan on my Pentium 2. Using the mouse to look around made me sick. I think I didn't have any issues when I didn't move the mouse around.

During the last 2 years I had issues with Dark Messiah of Might & Magic and Skyrim. Again, it was mainly because of using the mouse to look around. My cousin suggested I changed the FOV settings on Skyrim and after that I didn't have any issues, though I eventually put it aside to play other games.

I had the worst case of motion sickness when I tried to play Heretic on my Pentium 2. It was going so fast it made me really sick. I'm going to have to use my old 486 if I want to replay Heretic and Hexen, provided it still works.

Wow...I had no idea this was so common (among SG denizens at least). I've never had any kind of motion/cyber/etc sickness of any kind. Then again, I don't experience it IRL even when on roller coasters, bungie jumping, skydiving, etc.
I do usually turn off motion blur for aesthetics reasons. I just don't like how it looks-- including in Tomb Raider 2013.

Getting motion sickeness while playing videogames and/or tv for me, was never ever about actual "motion" sickness, just a result of subconsciously straining my eyes in an atempt to correct choppy fps.

Happened to me the summer days.
I dont know how the heck happened and cant even remember what game i was playing.
Just assuming as i had some really bad days that week stayed for 1-2 days at the house and was playing mostly games, as i am not used to playing games that much at all i started feeling sick. From that time i stopped using anything that has a screen. After 2 days i was fine.

As a developer we call this DIMS, mainly happens in FPS games, but can happen in other places due to camera movement.

DIMS : DOOM induced motion sickness

I suggest you read up about it, especially as the world is slowly moving into VR, check out a game called "I expect you to die", the designer there is considered one of the industries best "Jesse Schell" and he gave a speech about how to design for the VR systems and talks a lot about motion sickness as it is a big issue for many.

(on the answer to your question, nope I'm lucky and don't get motion sickness =D)

Had this issue once at least, i remember it well, it was Goldeneyes 64. That was the first game i ever played in 3D, it was on a demonstration console in a supermarket and i played it 20 min, and felt real bad after a moment because the whole 3D was messing me.

Never had a problem with motion sickness, even when playing games with super low FOV. I feel sorry for those who do though :/

If anyone here is feeling constant "motion sickness", you may want to see a doctor. I'm not implying it isn't possible games can induce such a thing. But I've had two friends over the years who would have this happen, they ended up having brain tumors.

I got really unbearable motion sickness from video games after getting a new monitor. Before that, I only got sick from Portal 2, L4D2 and sometimes from watching TF2 streams. With these things called "sea bands", I was finally able to play HL2 without wanting to hurl. Also, added additional lighting around the monitor.

But, much to my chagrin, I recently tried playing Deus Ex: Human Revolution and couldn't make it above an hour. Good to know there are people in the same boat. It really interferes with my enjoyment of games.

Tried Halo on Xbox recently and had no issues. I don't quite know why (lower fps maybe)?

I do wish there was a website where you could get optimal settings for each game to counteract motion sickness. It would be immensely useful!

Yeah I'm getting a lot of Motion Sickness especially when I play FPS. That's why I tend to avoid FPS.

With enough training (read: playing a lot) in one particular game, I can reduce the frequency getting hit by that ONE particular game, but it takes a lot of time.

I experience motion sickness in Half-Life, Half-Life 2, Portal, Portal 2, The Witness, Polarity and possibly others that I have forgotten about.
I decided to create a forum for gamers who experience motion sickness in the hopes that it would help not just myself but all gamers who experience motion sickness. The link is: https://motsickgaming.kandigalaxy.website
If you don't feel like creating an account right away, you can always follow me on twitter or instagram to see when games are added to the list or when fixes for games are added.
