fashionable headphones depend on the perception of the user. NAD, Beats (not the dre ones, the non-dre beats like the diamond) or bowers & Wilkins, Philips all had their approach lately (talking $150+ now)

But headphones + fashion = less sound for more price. Plus if you're going to listen to music on the go, I'd rather suggest in-ears. Better isolation, better sounding than equally priced headphones, easier to store - but less soundstage (which for most electronic genres for instance doesnt matter much).

Aaanyhoo, if you're going to buy a headphone that exceeds a certain price range, finding the best ones will require some effort from you: go to a store and TRY a couple of headphones. Only then you can judge what suits you best.

And also, don't listen to people whose reccomendation looks like this: "I have that, that is awesome" <_ worthless advice.

Personally, I'd go with the NAD Viso HP 50 if you're looking for a closed headphone.

Check out head-fi or head-fi's winter buying guide 2013 if you're looking for good advice, not steamgifts. Everyone has an opinion on something on steamgifts and there's loads of people who actually have no idea what they're talking about but feel qualified enough to talk about anything.

If you want the best headphones there is you have to get Beyerdynamic. Beyerdynamic DT990 is probably the best choice for headphones and they don't cost you more than $150. DT770 is the same but closed version if you prefer that. They have velour earpads which make them extremely comfortable, you can literally wear them for 12 hours and you don't notice it in any way. The headband is also very high quality and comfortable. In addition they are very sturdy because they are not made of plastic but proper materials. Most imortantly the audio quality is excellent, and I mean excellent. You have probably never heard music like it is with DT990's. Don't even think about buying Skullcandy or Beats or something crappy like that. Even Sennheiser headphones are not as good as Beyerdynamic one's. Sennheisers are made of plastic and the audio quality is not as good. They have good audio quality if you buy a good pair but not as good as Beyerdynamics. Check them out. You won't be disappointed.

+1
you're also able to replace broken parts on your own(if it's even possible to break them)

That's a nice feature as well. You really have to try to break them if you have to replace anything else than the earpads though :)

Etymotic or Shure if you want in-ears
Beyerdynamic (DT 990 or DT 770)
BUT where you want to use them? At home? Outside? What kind of music do you listen to (you can buy headphones for $100 and they will be great for electronic music but not so great for classical)? Do you have a decent sound card on your PC - if you are going to be using them on PC, that's it.
Is it not that simple to recommend the best headphones ever since there is no such thing. Someone prefers closed ones, someone opens, someone likes boosted bass, etc.

you can find quality reviews on headphone.com and base your purchase on them. the graphs might seem a bit technical but everything that you should know about a certain pair of headphones is explained in the reviews

If you have money, go for the Sennheiser HD800...

Edit: Of course, you WILL need some VERY GOOD sound card and music only in CD / DVD quality... otherwise... :)

I agree if you want neutral sound. They're great for that purpose since they don't have much bass or treble. But if you want bass and treble and overall much stronger sound (which is great in heavier music like metal and as well in genres with a lot of bass like dubstep and electric music in general) you want to go with DT990/770.

Just got myself some AKG K550s which sound pretty good to me although they're my first pair of headphones and I don't have anything to compare them to. They're only for home use really, too big and bulky to wear out and about.
