I already have Doom, but I wanted to let you know that if you need any suggestions about some really good comics to read (both current and ones from the past), please let me know.
I have to work the next few days, but I have Friday off and I can give you a pretty comprehensive list of some good reads. I have eclectic tastes with regards to comics, but I am positive that I could find you some gems that you'd like to give a look-see to!:)

Oh I would love some, I'd probably say something more current. I don't mind comics from the early 60s etc but I'd much prefer something more modern looking. If there is a must read from the past then let me know!

Sorry, I mean stuff from the early 2000s, 1990's, and possibly even the 1980's. I don't really have too much from the 60's except for ones collected in TPB format.:)
I saw that The Dark Knight Returns was on your list. That one is a good read, and The Dark Knight Strikes Again was decent. However, I've heard really bad things about his recent Dark Knight series (The Dark Knight III: The Master Race), so I would probably avoid that one!
There is a sequel to The Long Halloween, which is called Dark Victory. It is an interesting read, so I would recommend that one as well. There was a third series that they made, which is called Catwoman: When In Rome. I can't remember too much about it, but I don't remember it as being horrible.

Awww, hope you feel better... I'd have recommended a "comic" (well, manga, but same thing) as a funny thing to make you feel better but you asked for dark and gritty and it's the exact opposite. XD
(If you wanna check it out anyway though, look up Ranma 1/2. It's really funny.)

Ok, I am surprised no one mentioned "The Sandman" yet, by Neil Gaiman. It is absolutely fantastic, full of references to mythology in every page... But it is (mostly) very, hm, "heavy"... Anyway, Google Play has them, and you can check the samples of Vol.1 and Vol.2 and see if it is your kind of thing.
That said, Sandman is not the thing to lighten your mood... so here, something to lighten up your day, hopefully. :D

I enjoyed Sandman quite a bit. It gets a bit...erhm..slow at times but quite good once you get into it.

I find it hard to talk about comics without talking about Sandman :D
I've read through from beginning to end a couple of times and still just find it captivating! The stories have such depth, but most of them are also thoroughly readable just on a "superficial" level, and the characters are so well-rounded and interesting, even those who in any other comic would just be disposable background parts - I love virtually all of them...

I had no idea The Man Who Laughs was a graphic novel. Thanks for that - I mean to check it out. This is the version I know of, which is an amazing movie if you can get into old silent films. The second link is meant to cheer you up a bit hopefully :)

There's always going to be people better than you and worse, there's no reason to try and compare yourself to them. I bet a large percent of the people that you think are "good enough" have a lot of problems that you don't know about and are not happy with their lives. They just hide it and put on a happy face for everyone else to see.
You are who you are and you should be happy with yourself and try to surround yourself with people that accept you for who you are. If someone expects you to live up to their expectations, they are not good to have in your life and it's probably best to try and stay away from them. Let them hang out with other people like themselves and live unhappy lives constantly competing with eachother and trying to mold their lives into the ideals of other people instead of being truly happy.
Sorry if you didn't want a pep talk, hopefully that made sense though. I'm not very good at these things because I decided for myself many years ago the life is meaningless and I sort of gave up. I became a hermit and don't really interact with people anymore, so I personally don't have to deal with these issues and don't have much experience with them, but I tried :)

You are sitting alone in a bar. It is a quite place, even during the hours. As you were deep in thought, self shaming yourself with every sip, the door swings open. A tall figure walks into the bar and towards you.
"Hey there. You're one sombre looking fuck." Said the figure jokingly, as the light shines to his face concealing a green face of a man. A quite handsome man.
"You see, when I'm having one of those days, moody shitty days, you know what helps?"
He doesn't wait for an answer.
"Futurama. Yeah that shit is the shit. Like, every single time the Professor says Good news everyone! I can't help but smile like a bloody idiot all by myself. Oh yeah, also there's a channel in Youtube called CaptainDisillusion. That one's entertaining. Like Bill Nye and Mythbuster had a baby."
He is smiling fondly, he is either thinking these things he just told you about or he is a major creep. As you were about to comment regarding that, he backs away.
"Welp, gotta go mate. Your next drink's on me. Already paid for it."
He lights up a cigarette, walks away and out of the bar. Leaving you wondering: "What the fuck?"
