I know its not the same, but you could try to watch (or read) berserk manga. It really made my day when i started to read, and don't get fooled by it's a manga, because more dark shit is coming right at you than any other stuff.

It really depends what kind of comics you like and it seems like you enjoy mostly such that have ended.
Still I strongly recommend:
Alex + Ada - a one of a kind love story that involves some concepts that might be a future problem, overall it is very fun to read !
SAGA - is an amazing adventure that also has such elements but is one of the greates for a reason
The Wicked + The Divine - is also an amazing read.

There are a lot other but if you help out with the genre you like it would be easier for me. I hope you like them and good luck to everyone :P

As I added to other comments above, I highly recommend the staggeringly wonderfully perfect (and also really rather good) Sandman, and the unreservedly insane and hilarious Preacher.

I'll also add a new recommendation for Transmetropolitan, it is exceptionally cynical and grimy, but also always fun fun fun! Check it out!

For comics, I really liked Fables... if you have ever played the game "A Wolf Among Us", it is based on this comic series. Both the game and the comics have a rough world including death, partial nudity, swearing, etc so if that's not your kind of thing you may want to give it a pass.

But for 'dark and gritty', I think it would definitely be worth a look

Edit: Also if you are into reading novels, I can give a lot more recommendations. But since you didn't ask for those, I'll keep the list shortish:

• John Gywnn's Faithful & Fallen series... dark fantasy, lots of character death's. Think Gane of Thrones but with angel/devils theme
• Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series... nitty gritty wizardly detectiveness. Awesome series, can be dark at points but the character's have a lot of hope and humor too so overall I wouldn't say the mood is too dark. One of my top favs, but it is getting to have a lot of books now.
• Brandon Sanderson's The Reckoners series because you mentioned lots of superhero themed stuff. Reckoners series is basically what if there were superpower but everybody with powers was evil.
• Richard Kadrey's Sandman Slim series. Guy comes back from hell to range revenge. Not the most original, but not bad either.

I am too lazy to check other comments, so most likely I will repeat some things that are already said, but I hope that some thing will be new.

For starter if you end up liking/loving Dark Knight Returns don't fall into trap (like I did) and don't go to read its sequel (Dark Knight Strikes Again). It's just Millers jerking off on batman and shitting on superman, wonder woman, robin... and it's not good.

Some really good stuff from Miller: his Daredevil run and Sin City.
Besides Watchmen and V, I would also recommend Moore's From Hell.
X-Men: Cleremont's run (if you find whole run too long, be sure to check Dark Phoenix Saga, God Loves, Man Kills, Days of the Future Past), Morrison's run and Wheedon's run. Also Old Man Logan is great.
Of course you can't skip classics like Sandman (Neil Gaiman) and Maus (Art Spiegelman).

Two great French writers/artists are Lewis Trondheim and Manu Larcenet and some great work from them are: Ordinary Victories, The Spiffy Adventures of McConey and Dungeon.
Héctor Germán Oesterheld is great Argentine writer and his best works are: El Eternauta and Mort Cinder.

I really, really love Grendel Tales: Devils and Deaths from two great Croatian (my home country) authors. I am not sure how much others will like it, because some things in comic are allusions on events and mentality of Balkans people (Croatians, Serbs, Bosnians...) but I would recommend it anyway.

Not reading a lot of comics but I do like The Walking Dead ones. :3

A comic I enjoy is The Black Moon Chronicles, it's Dark fantasy, it's made by 2-3 frenchmen, but at least some of it has been translated to english and my native language(danish), for a comic i find the storyline quite well and the illustrations is great.
