I don't know if that could work with your controller but maybe you can use some tools like x360ce, it "masks" your controller as an xbox 360 controller which works for almost every game

also if i connect the two machines together will both machines need a copy of the game to play together?

what do you mean ? if you want to play lan, yes every account should have a copy of the game

potentially every game could support a controller with a little workaround

I don't know it sadly, I only have an xbox360 one. Try checking it's discusions for it, though dualshock ones tend to be just as general as xbox ones.

as i can't see two people or more using the same keyboard being very good

It has been the standard for PC games for many years. I have played quite a lot of games with friends this way, hurdled around a keyboard. It is not as bad as one would think, you just need a normal-sized table.
But most modern games are console-centric anyway, so getting a controller or two should easily solve the issue.

I've found that the "Full Controller Support" tag generally only means X-Input support (i.e. Xbox controller support), where as the vast majority of controllers are designed for direct input. to work around this you'll need to use additional software (such as x360ce) to convert your controllers d-input into x-input.

Download and run x360ce. That… is pretty much it. You need to mess it around a little to make sure it translates inputs as expected, but it is IMO a relatively intuitive program. Also: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYL7BMNXeao (You can also just look up x360ce on YT, several people made nice videos about it.)

That is… strange. Still, really, just search for the program's name on YouTube, you'll find some informative videos.

download the x360ce.exe from the top right corner of this page: http://www.x360ce.com/ (make sure it's the 32bit version unless you're playing one of the few games that's 64bit), place the exe in the directory that the game you want to play is ( for example: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\GrowHome ), and then run it. It will say a file is missing and if you want to create it, click the "create" button. Now just change the button mappings to best fit your controller, and run the game. It should automatically work now with your controller.

I think it just means you'd be able to control all aspects of the game with a controller, like menu, setting etc, and not just gameplay.

X360ce is the tool you need. It takes a bit to setup, but it's well worth it.

No, I assume not, but it's basically the only option out there. There are several YT tutorials about the setup.

I finally caved and went with 4 wired 360 controllers picked up from a second-hand store for cheap. They work great!

No more messing around with x360ce, although that tool is excellent. Everything just works now.

Although, I've heard Steam's new native controller options are really good, but you have to be in Big Picture Mode to access them. Which I don't use.
