Well first of all, he wasn't sentenced yet, so arguing about his punishment doesn't make any sense at the moment.
Also I think we can all agree that he did something illegal, no matter if you think piracy is kind of okay or totally wrong, it is still illegal and you know you could get punished for it. That's all that happened so far. He did something illegal and was caught, and actually he should have known that this could happen.
On the other hand I agree with a lot of people, that a 30 year sentence would be a joke. Piracy is a crime, but in comparison to other crimes, it is kind of harmless. First of all the actual damage is kind of low. No human suffers any harm, the monetary damage isn't really big in most cases, because like 90% of the people using it would have never spend a dollar on any product in the first place.
I think piracy is on a level of tax evasion. You don't do real damage to anybody but you screw millions of people. The only difference is that piracy hurts people with money and tax evasion is used by people with money.

but they need that money for convince the world that they are heroes like in the movies and drop some bombs in other countries, in preventive way of course...
seriously, the big deal is that the entertainment industry pays a lot of money in taxes and this money finally is spent not in health programs, or education but in the defense (and preventive attacks of course) so for that is the aggressivity with the anti piracy laws in USA and now in other countries... :(

'good job' So why it's good? You gain nothing from it when site is offline and you lose nothing when site is online ( actually reddit user named "katrevival" brough kat back to life few hours ago) so nothing changes he's going to keep the site running.

At least he didn't warn a company promising their customers encryption of their data that customer info was lying on a public FTP server, they send an FBI death squad to your house if you do that.

That's excesive, it's not like he killed or raped somebody, he just shared files without permission. And it wasn't even top secret state files, it was entertaiment media, copyright laws can get seriously ridiculous.
30 years for that? That's like 5 tops, more like 1 or 2, it doesn't seem fair to me.

Fuck torrents, I used KAT because of the great community, damn, now it is gone!
Also the owner did not share anything, just provided the site where people could share files and torrents were removed whenever DMCA wanted. So why exactly did they arrest him? I must miss something.

yep, better try closing the whole internet if we are at it instead of actually trying to reach people who would gladly pay for a legal alternatives for said content
because we all know hammering down on eviiil pirates certainly solved any...oh wait, it never did
then again RIAA and all those copyright maffia corps dont care about offering legal alternatives for such content distribution, they dont care about content creators either. They only care about making money off their back.
good ol copyright hypocrisy in general
remember folks: the very same morons predicted the death of the movie industry when VCR and writable DVD-s came out, the very same fuckheads predicted the death of the music industry
none of those happened
I can only repeat what Gabe Newell once said and its still relevant in this case: piracy is a service problem
also
1.piracy will never be killed, no matter what Hollywood and all those smartasses wants to believe
2.people who dont want to pay for said content wont be suddenly converted to be legitimate users with legal consequences
maybe if legally bought DVDS etc wouldnt immediately treat paying customers as potential criminals, if they wouldnt try and enforce regional restrictions over the internet....then again one can dream I suppose
Piracy basically fills a place for, wait for it, not only cheapskates but for people who are tired that legally bought content performs worse than the same version that you can download for free or when anti piracy only ends up harming legitimate users.

Ah, I didnt understand why I wasnt able to contact the kat website yesterday. There are plenty of alternatives though.
30 Years. Ouch. I doubt he will get sentenced to 30 years though. Even if he gets just 5 or 10 its an awful lot.
In my country you can kill people and get less prison time (than 5-10 years). And yes, in my book thats WAY worse than some copyright infringement.
