Which one was it?
Yeah that was back when I joined the touhou group, so I managed to wins tales of zestiria as the only entry purely because people didn't want to lose up so many touhou points. I left after I got to a point where I couldn't keep up with gifting every 2 months but during that time there I won a decent amount of games
I got a top 3. For my main though there's the play a win event group of course. I take part every month and the people who have taken over are my best friends so its a great place for me to be
While I dont do much with them anymore I would say playing appreciated. It gave me a reason at the time to keep doing gas back when I only did public.
Finally fluffy pink kingdom. Bit biased as I am a mod. It was mainly a discord group anyway and its a bits dead now but at the time of joining it was amazing. It helped me out when I was in a dark place so it does hold a place in my heart no matter what.

I think I would have enjoyed joining there because I do a monthly giveaways where I give out a couple games since I've started my journey on Steamgifts, 6 months ago.

Do they still have open recruitment?

I'm trying to enter in this group in the next month, but I want to set my record right and play the games I've won so far on this site.

Just gotta play a win that fits the theme to join that group. Everymonth it changes and you can even suggest one that you would like or vote for what you think is the best one. For this month you can play your backlog but only if you get 100% achievements so if you got a short enough game you can play in the next couple of days you are free to join. You also got little wins so once you beat those or have none fitting the theme you are allowed to use your backlog until you get another win. The group doesn't really do much though as the main giveaways are for people who take part in the actual event parts but you don't have to play every time. As long as you take part every now and then you won't be kicked from the group
Pretty sure it was from pa that I recognised you, if you are playing games for that group anyway feel free to enter in the above. As long as you aren't a jerk about things you can feel free to ask anything you want

Mainly why I'm looking to join groups that do giveaways is that I can increase my chances to have access to my wishlist games. I believe that some groups do that and give away games that I'm personally interested about.
I am pretty much the type of player that enjoys to play the game to it's finish line and if I can, get to 100% achievements if the game deserves my time.

I've never considered myself a jerk. 😅 Unless I don't feel restrained by rules, I'm more than happy to stay dedicated to a group where I feel there's mutual benefits.

It really depends on luck, I got my first win not even a week after joining and since then I think the longest period I've gone without winning anything was two months or so. On the other hand there's users here that went over a year before their first win.
That said there definitely has been periods when the site feels kinda lethargic for a few weeks, and there's normally people calling it dead or at least dying when that happens, yet we're still here.
Comment has been collapsed.
That's a surprise for me. I can say that since my joining, I've won 1 game/month on this website. This month, I've won 2 games a day after the other, and I can say I've never been as lucky as this.
I hope to see this website keep on going as I also try to contribute to the giveaways as they are fun to do and brings together nice people.

SGTools says...:
Public: 41%
Group: 35%
Private: 18%
WL: 9%
I guess it adds to more than 100% since some GAs are Group+WL, probably. I like to compare this to my SENT gifts, to see if it is somewhat balanced. Let us see...
Public: 61%
Group: 29%
Private: 7%
WL: 26%
Partially because almost all my Group GAs are Group+WL, I guess.

When it comes to winning giveaways - it's much better imo. Points are generated in a different way and are limited and thanks to that bot users can't enter everything. There were some purging events, where support have suspended a lot of autojoiners, but I still see them everywhere so I'm not sure how effective was that.
Also - the longer you are here (and you appear on forum) you can take part in puzzles, join groups or end up on somebodys whitelist - and that also give you more chances to win something.
When it comes to discussions and support then... ugh. Mods are more busy suspending users for using zalgo font, than solving re-roll tickets.
Some nice users (at least for me - some could hate them) were permamently suspended thanks to support efforts (skillfully adding fuel to the fire and then throwing suspensions left and right).
Generally - thanks to heavy moderation and new rules - forum looks like barren land in comparision to the past.
I wait for solwing re-roll ticket for 3 days already, but I'm sure that if I would reply to my own post or use zalgo font somewhere - I would be suspended in 5 seconds.

If they are really easy - number of entries would be similar to public ones. That's almost antibot protection xD
Some are harder or time consuming (fe 2h worth of jigsaw). Some are really hard (like cding/decryption involved).

These are my stats. Based on number of won games, not CV.
55.3% Public
18.5% Private
13.7% Whitelist
12.4% Group
I used sgtools. The issue with using these numbers is that a giveaway can have both group and whitelist restrictions at the same time. To fix this I did the following:
Add up the number of games it says you won from public, private, whitelist, and group.
Take that number and subtract the total number of games it says you won under "all".
Now you know how many games you won that had both group and whitelist restrictions.
Divide that number in half.
Subtract that number from the numbers shown for both whitelist and group.
Use those new whitelist and group numbers to figure out your percentages out of your total listed as "all".

It's tie between public and group ga's for me. 23 from each.

Yeah, I was rather surprised myself. Before I checked my stats, I was pretty confident that the majority of my wins were from groups. Like you said, the odds are so much better (although I still managed to lose a few where my chances were 1:3 and even 1:2 🤣).

25 Public (69.44%)
6 Private (16.67%)
6 Whitelist/Group (16.67%) (Combined these because they apparently overlap)

as group ratios are not separate too
for example if you have 2 groups and you win a game shared for both of them, you will have something like 80% win value in one group and 20% on the others.
It works for everything shared on groups or WL at the same time

11 of my wins are from public giveaways, with private and group wins tied for second place with 8 from both. And 3 whitelist wins behind them.

So far, I've not won a game on my wishlist, but rather games suggested to me. I can't say I've had luck as of yet with such games, and therefor I've not yet bunker down on the games I've won. I am considering to slowly pick them up, good or bad as they are.

I've actually only won 68 games, not 76. There was some crossover with some I guess, like a Private/Whitelist giveaway. Also, only 5 games have been region restricted, and 16 were full value (never bundled).
Comment has been collapsed.
That was interesting to look up. I was honestly kinda surprised by the results. Although, that might just be because of the CV charts; the games I value were the ones I most enjoyed playing rather than the ones worth the most CV so that likely influenced where I felt the majority of my wins came from. Also included my sent gifts info for comparison.

I joined a smaller group whose rules are give back equally when you win and that's where most of my wins came from. The true CV (according to sgtools) from the private giveaways almost equals the CV from the group GAs though, interestingly. I hadn't realized that.

It's difficult to say because I enter a lot of indie games that are wishlisted and most are bundled. Maybe Forgotten Anne? That's a really nice game. Yes, they're recruiting, it's the Jedi Training Academy, they have a thread on the Discussions forum here :) I find that everyone gets a fair chance and if you don't want to give more than the one required monthly game, then just don't enter giveaways so it's fair.

Sorry LOL, I didn't want to seem like I was trying to promote them. The guy who runs it is really nice but I'm not sponsored to go out there and recruit. Since you asked, here you go https://www.steamgifts.com/discussion/kV1Bn/jedi-training-group. He started another group that doesn't have the monthly requirement, for people whose SG stats may not be as good or they don't want to do the monthly gifting rule, so if you don't have any luck there try the Mini Jedi one here https://www.steamgifts.com/discussion/EM8Rl/mini-jedi-training-group

Oh, I'm happy you enjoy this. I struggle sometimes asking questions, but I do enjoy engaging with you guys here, because it's fun to see what people like and what they don't and how much and little we sometimes have in common as gamers.
I hope though that I don't get on people's nerves with random questions. 😅
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, it's really interesting. IMO, if they don't want to respond, they don't have to. So just do what makes you happy :) I'm sure you've met some cool people and heard some interesting perspectives this way. I want to be more like that, but I'm a bit shy at times. I really like the forums for that reason.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, you're not shy at hopping on threads. I believe you're worried more about what people would think. I can promise you that even the "dumbest" questions get answered by genuinely kind people. It's more of the image we think we have outside that ruins our momentum.
If I feel a question is worth asking, I'll ask it. If not, I'll just think it through a little better. So all in all, you got this! I'm shy too, but my years of experience on my business have taught me that bringing yourself out of discomfort and repeating a process creates confidence. Sooner or later, it becomes rather easy. The start is the problem. 😉

Whitelist, but didn't know i won almost as much from groups, as there aren't many group ones i join anymore, must be a thing from the past.
Don't know how to do that table thing, and get the numbers that way, but doesn't matter.
Numbers seem irrelevant anyway, i mean offcourse the more groups or whitelists you join, the bigger your chances will get.
You can be in groups that have like 10-30 entries on average if you wanted.

Judging by SG Tools my stats are:
Public — 415 (57,16%)
Group + whitelist — 305 (42,01%)
Private — 6 (0,83%)
There is a lot of combined GAs for groups and WL, so, it gives more than 100% in total when you count them separately (group — 226/31,12%; whitelist — 219/30,17%).
Also, for some reason, SG Tools shows a different amount of won/given games and a different CV amount than Steamgifts itself.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, I'm kinda slow to get to the games I have and it can be tricky to remember which games I won and which I've bought by myself. I still exploring PS2 and PS360 (or even older) era games I've missed. Yesterday I've discovered F-Zero for example; I've finally completed The Getaway during the last Holidays and I tend to spend an evening playing Pac-Man, Galaxian and Dig Dug from time to time)
To be honest, most of the games I won in the first 3 years on SG are lazy unplayable asset flippers, abandoned early access "games" and multiplayer-only projects with dead servers. 😅 There is also a bunch of bundled indies that looks curious enough to try but aren't a priority right now. I really enjoyed Bear With Me though, and I've got a few awesome games for the collection purposes like Brutal Legend and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons (I've beaten them on console back in the day, but I would like to replay them on PC at some point).
In terms of won games I haven't played yet but really interested in — there is South Park: The Fractured But Whole (I need to buy and play the first one first); XCOM2 and XCOM: Chimera Squad (there's too much turn-based games in my backlog right now), Age of Wonders: Planetfall (same story); Spirit Hunter: Death Mark (saving it for the right mood to play:)

I've not won any of my wishlisted games either, but I don't think the games I've won are too bad. I've just completed one yesterday, Blood Knights was a weak title when it comes to story and execution, but not an horrible game to play. I'll be picking some other I can actually finish and have a story behind it.

I've spend hundreds of hours on XCOM 1 & 2 myself. It's a game that you can come back any time and change the game again. It's quite repetitive at some point, but I like it very much.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, Blood Knights is a flawed game, but it's a fully-fledged game nonetheless. It's playable and it can be fun for some time. I've mostly meant the featured "games" with 50+ copies to be given away. Something like Zombow; Joana's Life; Hungry Shadows; Rise of One; Zombie Clicker Defense etc.
I've tend to skip GAs for the games with suspicious names and arts nowadays😅
Yeah, I've played a bit in the first one, I've beaten a bunch of games with similar mechanics and I love Civilization series (except the last one). So, I'm sure I will spend a lot of evenings playing the second part)

I do the same, unless I start to recognize the title since I've seen it a lot of the time on giveaways. I've found games I've never seen or searched before because Steam never recommended and I never actively searched for them.

Same, Civilization V was a lot of enjoyment for me. I didn't play that much Civilization VI and I don't know why. Maybe I just felt that there's not much improvement than the previous one.
Comment has been collapsed.
I've played a hell out of Civ3 back in the day; I've almost skipped a Civ4 due to different reasons, but I consider it as a huge improvement and one of the best entry points to the series. Finally, I've spent hundreds of hours in Civ5: it lacks the depth of its predecessor, but it wasn't as overwhelming as Civ4 with all add-ons. Civ Revolution was just a Meh, but it moved the series back to the consoles after a long break. Beyond Earth looked like some mod to Civ5, had serious balancing issues and was overpriced. Civ6... Well, its art direction is kinda awful — it looks like Civ Revolution now. There were fewer civilizations on release, there are too many paid DLCs and AI is still as dumb as it has always been :\ Well, I guess it's time to give Humankind a try — I've heard its diplomacy system and AI were not so bad.

I never played older Civ's than Civ 5 to be honest. I never knew about it until I discovered the 5th. I honestly never knew I've had a passion for turn-base games as I did. Most enjoyment I got was from this series and XCOM and I don't regret the countless hours I've spent.
So, judging from what you've said, Civ 3 was the best of them all?
Comment has been collapsed.
It was great for its time and it have a few fun (and useless) mechanics like a palace building. But it's too old now, and it can be a pain to make it run on modern OS/hardware. Civ 4, probably, had more content/mechanics/innovations than the rest. It is also cheap, don't require a powerful PC and works on Win10 — so, it's still a solid entry point for new players. Civ5 is a little bit simplified, but not in a bad way. It has fancier graphics and Steam Workshop support with tons of mods. Some mechanics are better in the 4th instalment, and some in the 5th. So, it's really down to personal preferences to choose which one is better.
I honestly never knew I've had a passion for turn-base games as I did
Civilization is a strategy game for those who don't (yet) like strategy games)

I used to play a lot as a kid RTS's, but not turn-base. Well, Might & Magic Heroes was one that I enjoyed, but didn't know if it was because of my friend playing it or the lack of other games back in the days. 🤣 Although I can consider myself a fan of that series as well. Civ just changed the way I perceived turn-base games.

Oh, sweet memories) Heroes of Might & Magic III was my first game on PC) It's probably the main reason I've fallen in love with fantasy)
I'm too slow for the RTS'. Still, I've played a lot of Dune 2000, American Conquest, Stronghold 1&2 and TLotR: The Battle for Middle-Earth back in the day)
Comment has been collapsed.
I've not played Dude, nor American Conquest, but I did play Cossacks: European Wars which was actually my very first RTS. Stronghold was also such a good game, but I remember playing just Stronghold 2. I've also played TLotR: The Battle for Middle-Earth and still remember being one of the best games I've played as a kid. I love Lord of The Rings and having to play it makes me fall in love with it.
PS: Cossacks: European Wars had such a good graphics for it's time, that even today I'm impressed by it's building details. Did you play Cossacks 2 and 3? I want to play them all once more for the sake of the experience.
Comment has been collapsed.
I've played some of the Cossacks games a little. Probably the first two were among them, but I'm not really sure. American Conquest is actually a spin-off of Cossacks designed for the US market. There isn't much of a difference, as I recall, but I've preferred it because of the setting. I haven't played Cossacks 3, but I've heard mostly positive things about it. At least from the fans of the previous instalments.
Comment has been collapsed.
I didn't know any other Cossacks or games similar to that existed. I remember getting this game through the dad of my best friend and back then internet wasn't available for us, so it was what we got. We got blown away by the graphics at that time anyway. I just got all the franchise recently and I want to revisit them for the sake of nostalgia. But I'd consider playing Cossacks 3 for the fact that is more modern and I'd be able to not burn my eyes with the graphics. 😅
