most new games but not all for the last few weeks have been giving me Corrupt Download or Content Severs Unreachable. since steam no longer supports windows 7 going forward that's fine. im unhappy about it, but its legal. ive refunded 2 games so far that i was unable to play cause of it.
the problem is steam is now taking games from me ive paid for and played for years or just a few months.
games will download 98% of the way and Corrupt Download or Content Severs Unreachable
starting today im no longer able to play some games because of forced updates are now using the new steam download system. its about 50% of the games.

theses 3 all advertise working on windows 7 and ive played them. i believe changing a thing and stopping the customer from playing games they purchased on the same system they purchased them on and they were advertised as working on is illegal under EU law.
also
Ship of Fools
and
Let's Patiti!
these two don't advertise, but they work. not any more
edit
the dev of Cornucopia offered me a steam key to give to a friend with windows 11 that could download the game for me and send me the files. this would 100% work and i would have to do this with EVERY GAME that changes over to new download system and thats insane
you can download them on my steam deck, but if i try to move them they need other files cause its linux to windows so it doesnt work

every single thing they do to window 7 today, they can do to windows 10 tomorrow or any other operating system they choose

Have you considered Windows 10 LTSC? It doesn't need new hardware, and it has official support from Microsoft until 2027, or 2031 if using the IoT version (no idea how it's different to regular). Whether Steam supports it for that long is another story, but it's an alternative to Win11 that will work on old systems.

I've been using it for 2+ years, no problems related to compatibility, software not working, etc. It's practically identical to using Windows 10. It's missing some things like a media player, image viewer, and all the MS/Xbox store stuff, but there are official installers to get them separately.

The only problem is obtaining and activating it. A couple of years ago the .ISO was available from a public Microsoft server, no strings attached, but they closed that now. I know the Internet Archive has a genuine .ISO uploaded to it, but I'm not sure if it's the latest one.

most of the time you dont need to do anything at all
right now playing Evil West and did nothing to get it running
sometimes you need to add 1 line to the launcher
rare times where you delete 1 file from the game files, add a fake file with a name of missing thing needed that it doesnt really need
super rare that ive only done for 2 games is just download a file offline to fix it

Interesting. Is it the same with the rest of Windows 7 functionality? Where you simply drop a file in here and there, don't have to spend time researching fixes before implementing them, and so on?

Because even when I was still using 7 at the advent of 10, it was becoming too time consuming to make everything function properly. And issues kept surfacing.

I never experienced any advantage of newer Windows OS. After 7 the infamous 8 and 8.1 was a train wreck. I didn't get any new and remarkable feature out of 10. Now I'm using 11 because my mainboard's WiFI has no driver for 10.
The end of 10 will produce a huge amount of unnecessary e-waste and force people to buy new hardware while the smarter ones turn to Linux hopefully.
They always tell the public the new Windows is safer while security breaches are getting more severe year by year. Those updates serve technocrats who want to make a name for themselves for the most part.

https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/4784-4F2B-1321-800A

As of January 1 2024, Steam stopped supporting the Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 operating systems. Existing Steam Client installations on these operating systems will no longer receive updates of any kind including security updates. Steam Support will be unable to offer users technical support for issues related to the old operating systems, and Steam will be unable to guarantee continued functionality of Steam on the unsupported operating system versions.

To continue using of Steam and any games or other products purchased through Steam, users should update to a more recent version of Windows. We expect the Steam client and games on these older operating systems to continue running for some time without updates after January 1st, 2024, but we are unable to guarantee continued functionality after that date.

This change is required as core features in Steam rely on an embedded version of Google Chrome, which no longer functions on older versions of Windows. In addition, future versions of Steam will require Windows feature and security updates only present in Windows 10 and above.

We strongly encourage all Windows 7/8/8.1 users to update sooner rather than later. Microsoft ended security updates and technical support for Windows 7 in January 2020 and for Windows 8.1 in January 2023. Computers running these operating systems, when connected to the internet, are susceptible to new malware and other exploits which will not be patched. That malware can cause your PC, Steam and games to perform poorly or crash. That malware can also be used to steal the credentials for your Steam account or other services.

You own the content, but you are on an unsupported OS. They don't promise updates will work on it. It is just that now you have noticed an issue occurring on an unsupported OS.

You should probably look at getting an alternate OS. If not Windows, look at Linux distributions.

Seeing as Windows 10 is not being supported in a few months doesn't really have me that surprised by what you've stated.
But I don't think it's on purpose, their probably doing updates to the services to meet their own, or international, security requirements, and as such Windows 7 downloads aren't working correctly anymore.

My best recommendation is to either upgrade, or, if finances and/or system requirements are keeping you from doing that, change your OS to Linux since it's free, and has Proton which can force run non Linux based games (works really well on the SteamDeck).

I mean Windows 7 support ended 5 and a half years ago. I don't know if I'd call that "artificial", running a that old OS and using it for current day things is kinda absurd. It's so old that simply using it on a PC connected to the internet is a security problem in of itself - not just for Steam, but in general. It's an almost 16 year old OS.

Broken downloads is artificial, yes. If game was designed for Win 7 it should be able to work on Win 7.

Permalink

People keep saying "support ended" like "W7 died". Ending support to force people into a new less efficient OS is a scummy practice and it has nothing to do with the validity of the OS.
But yeah we are forced to move on or pick alternatives that are made mostly ineffective. Doesn't mean Slayer's feeling like he is being robbed of games that can run on his OS less valid.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It has nothing to do with people forcing anyone to do anything. You can download the files on one computer, transfer them to the Windows 7 system and use them. What is a problem however is when you want to use an, by technological terms, ancient, operating system to interact with an online service.

So that argument doesn't hold water, sorry. The operating system works like it always did - it's the world around it that's moved on.

I mean, I have a machine with Windows 98 on it that I use for retro gaming at times. I wouldn't ever dream of putting that thing online though. That would absolutely crazy. Arguing that Microsoft should have kept it secure so I can use it just like I did back when it came out is a ridiculous notion, I think most people would agree about that. Windows 7 is no different.

Does Steam, a 21 year old service, really need to regularly make breaking changes to its private API to the point that it must force people to upgrade their Steam client all the time, though?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes. The Steam client is vastly changed since the 16 years ago when Windows 7 came out, and most of those changes were for the better. So yeah, that's not unreasonable.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Did it change that much since Win 7 support ended, less than 2 years and a half ago, though? And if so, how hard would it have been to keep a legacy version of the API around for a bit longer?
As I think it was mentioned in some other comments here, Steam does list quite many games that are not compatible with Windows >7, so when at the same time the Steam client can't work with Windows <=7, well... that's an odd situation 👀

I mean, I'm not saying they should provide active support and all, but they could simply avoid cutting off stuff that's still working fine.

My favorite is killing off Win 10 in order to force people into Win 11, which requires Voodoo magic to bypass the semi-mandatory MS account to proceed with installation.

But the scariest part is how many people find this so normal that complaining about it gets you hate and laughs, not from MS employees, but from fellow consumers

We live in a corporate-ruled world. I guess it's easier for most people to just accept the rule than to question it.

I think Microsoft is going to regret killing W10 so soon. They have already lost about a third of their users in the past 2 years and most likely this trend will keep going with a lot more people deciding they don't need a PC after all and a tablet or a mobile with Android is cheaper and just fine to browse and watch videos. They'll still have corporate clients and a good percentage of the gamers but they'll lose the rest little by little.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

At the same time people have to realize that software, that you use online, won't work forever without updates. That has nothing to do with accepting corporate rule or whatever, it's a simple fact of how software works. Things will eventually break and that's that. Something as complicated as an OS needs constant updates in order to be secure.

And we're literally talking about ancient OSes here. I'm all for using what you have when it makes sense. In this case it just doesn't.

While I can understand your frustation. The changes are mostly due to upgrading systems and security.
But send a message to steam, they might check into that, they may have a solution and not even be intentional but rather overlooked.

The worse upgrade yet will be the tons of machines that aren't compatible with windows 11 making them vulnerable and turned to "trash" all over the world. But again, security must evolve as there were A LOT and still are many other flaws.

I don't get how everyone is putting up with this Micro$oft nonsense.
All over the world, governments are trying to get electronic device manufacturers to be more responsible as to the weight of their push to consumerism on the environment and they are totally ok with Microsoft just deciding 65% of working computers are now obsolete just so they can install 90% more spyware and crapware on PCs

I think lawmakers are just still totally illiterate about software and "virtual" stuff more in general. That's also why digital quasi-monopolies have no issues, while if a car manufacturer had gotten a fraction as dominant as, for instance, MS, Google or Amazon it would have long been split into multiple different companies due to anti-trust regulations.

I feel for you, especially since Win7 was the first and last really good Windows, but expecting Valve (or any developer) to keep their Software running on old OS forever is simply unrealistic and you will keep running into problems like this.

Two possible solutions:

  1. Switch to GOG. Yes, you would have to buy your games again, but they dont force you to use their launcher, so if you download a game and it runs on Win7, you would theoretically still be able to install and run them a 100 years from now.

  2. Use Linux. Nowadays its easy to use, great for gaming (apart from a few competitive games like Online-FPS), free, supported by Valve and I´d imagine it requires a lot less tinkering than maintaining a Win7 installation in 2025. I just recently made the switch from Win10 to Kubuntu and couldn´t be any happier.

Apart from that, the command line tools Andrewskis mentioned could really work. I´d give that a try first.

Yeah, that makes it a lot more frustating, but with every digital distribution outside of GOG, the launcher/DRM is always part of the package and will some day break down.
