A noob question:

  • How do you receive payment in TF2/Dota/CS:GO keys, if your product is not an inventory item (e.g. Humble Bundle gift URLs)?

I mean, technically. Can you even gift crate keys to other users through the Steam interface? I have no idea.

you cant gift them, you open a trade window, and only one party gives items, other one doesnt have to put anything

So, I gather, this is the second least secure way to trade, right behind PayPal?

You can't technically gift them but you can send a trade offer with nothing in the other party's half of the trade. You receive warnings about giving away your life, firstborn, etc. but it's a valid trade.

Send the link to people who have high rep and hope they don't scam you.

As above, like, how would I transfer my TF2 key to a friend's inventory?

With a trade - TF2 keys for nothing in return. You can't gift them as far as I know and keep in mind if you are buying your TF2 keys on the market you can't trade them for 7 days.

Thanks!

Actually, I asked, cause I distinctly remember someone stating in their trade guidelines that they trade for an "empty crate" (I forget exact phrase, might be pulling this out of my ass here) with, like, a note inside, stating what was the payment for????

That's a new one on me. Sounds like it could be a system that a trader worked out for selling game keys through an automated exchange like TF2 dispenser or similar, but that kind of thing isn't necessary.

I used to buy a lot of games for keys on steamtrades before there were so many restrictions. I never had any problems but be wary of scammers if you are trading for stuff outside of the trade window like CD keys - steam support won't help at all if you get into trouble. Only trade with people you know really well or people with very high rep, and then check at least a few of the people who left rep to make sure they look legit.

Okay, let's say you're selling and not buying this way.

And you have low rep, like me. Do you think this is viable? Will buyers be turned away?

On steamtrades it is traditional for whoever has the lowest rep to go first (if it isn't items that can be traded at the same time in the trade window). So if you have low rep you would be expected to hand over the game key and then the other guy would send you the payment. Which is fine if the other guy has +200 rep, but can be a bit nervous if two people both have low rep.

People don't generally scam each other on bundle game trades though, it isn't worth the negative feedback. They get used to build rep (and then sometimes scam people over something expensive). If you are selling more expensive items with low rep you might want to look into middlemen.

The "Empty Crate" you are referring to is a generic TF2 item box. They drop constantly, and unless you want to blow a key on them, they are mostly worthless (unless a rare box). Some people like to give one of those TF2 Boxes in exchange for whatever they are trading for so it doesn't look like a one sided trade. It was believed that if an account receives or sends too many one sided trades that Valve will think something fishy is going on and ban the account. In reality, I have never heard of this ever happening, and I have done plenty of one sided trades. I used to do the crate thing, but now I don't bother.

I see, that makes sense for someone who trades a great deal.

Thanks for clearing that up.

^ this
Although the main reason for using it isn't because valve bans accounts that do to many one way trades but because too many one way trades can get your account flagged as "suspicious" and since steam support is the worst of it's kind most traders generally prefer to avoid having steam look into their account at all cost, not because they're doing shady stuff but simply because steam support is just generally bad at doing their jobs properly leading to accidental trade bans all the time which in turn take a ridiculously long time to fix.

I was meaning Trade Bans, not Account wide bans, but thank you for the clarification!

Open a trade window and give the keys. You can gift things in a trade; you don't have to take anything back for any item you trade away.

You can send a trade request through chat in the option next to their name or a trade offer if you have their offer link.
