So, i've received some random friend requests on facebook. I've accepted most of them and usually they are friendly people. Have not met anyone unfriendly yet. Do you have any experience with strangers on facebook (or some other site)?

If we talk about randoms, I'm pretty sure I haven't reached 20 together in my multiple years of being there. I'm not pretty enough I guess :D

Assuming not female doesn't automatically equate to also assuming male.

In my experience the random requests are nearly always bots posting shady links

So I just flag and ignore

I am pretty active in travellers groups on fb, so I get 5-20 random requests per month just from newbies who want to ask for some tips or from people asking for some details on sth I talked about in the group, but didn't want to spam it etc. So usually no bad experience at all.

Only had horrible experience once and it was this winter - some idiot decided to create bunch of fake accounts across multiple social medias and stalk me, including death threats, because "he wasted 2 gift entries in SG Holiday Event because of me"... -.-

Aw man, some people have serious problems. What a terrible experience. How did this turn out, if you don't mind me asking.

I have no idea who the guy was, reported him on FB (he got banned, support replied said they banned all his accounts), reported him on MAL (account banned no reply from support), reported him on Goodreads - they said they do not deal with these issues ;p These are three profiles he found me on ;p

Wow that is crazy. Guy must have had other issues and this just triggered him.

I wasted way more then that ..... But I'd not call any of them wasted. Just stuff I was not interested in. But that was kinda the point. I also randomly picked various styled boxes just to see what might be in them. I was pleasantly surprised by finding nice stuff in plain boxes many times.

Alas the space cat did not smile on me, but it was fun.

well, truth be told I created shitload of great looking boxes with not-so-great games ;p Not all my games were shitty, but there were just a few good ones among over a hundred of bad ones ;p (I simply loved making these boxes tbh ;p). So I do totally get why someone could get angry, BL me (I got like 140 BLS during event ;p) etc. But stalking and death threats sent via fake accounts is taking it waaaay to another level and I gotta be honest - it was not pleasant experience. I played it cool, mocked the guy over how pathethic he gotta be to stalk person over 1/1000 chance to win a game which happens 5 times every fucking day etc, but still gotta say it felt bad.

When I did have a FB account (deleted it about 6 years ago) I kept the privacy strict so probably nobody could contact me if I was not already friends with them on there. Plus I didn't post and was only friends with like 30 ppl, mainly family. No groups or public pages. So I never received a friend request on there from a stranger.

But I will sometimes get friends requests on steam and usually accept if it looks like a real account, or if it's someone from SG or someone I played a game with. If it has some CSGO Skins etc in the name, level 1 steam account, or whatever, I'll just block it.

I get random friend requests all the time, and 100% of them are men. I add none of them. Most of them are foreigners that can't speak proper English. Before I had the good sense to block messages from randoms, I was getting stuff like "You are beauty. I would like to get to know" or something equally as stupid in even more broken English.

Facebook isn't a dating site, so they can take their false flattery elsewhere. Pretty sure that half of the ones with the bad English are scammers trying to find a gullible woman who will give them money.

Didn't they introduce Facebook Dating or something recently? I don't use Facebook personally but it has a business purpose and I've heard quite a few times that there is this facebook dating app or something being introduced into their platform. Could be geo-locked or something, I haven't actually looked into it much myself.

Even still, Facebook dating would/should be geo-locked.

I don't know. I don't use facebook that much. I probably only check it once or twice a week.

If there is a dating app, I'm pretty sure that you'd have to opt-in voluntarily. Those men weren't messaging me from that though. It's been going on for years. It's not like it's 100's of people either, just enough to be annoying.

That's a different world indeed. Can't say I've ever had it happen, whilst using Facebook several moons ago or even using steam; many people I've interacted with have countless stories of endless rando's messaging them or wanting to add them as friends.

Rightfully so they should have the app as an opt-in by default. They are pretty shifty and deceptive with their advertising practices and all kinds of other security holes throughout their time.

"As Facebook announced in May, users will create separate profiles just for the Dating service. The only information ported over is your age and first name; you will need to manually fill out additional required information including your verified location, gender, and the gender(s) of the people youโ€™re interested in matching with. You can also specify your height, religion, job title, where you work, where you went to school, and whether you have children."

Ah, so it's a second profile. Can you imagine all the weirdos messaging people based solely on their profile picture if they introduced it without this second profile thing? Gosh. It's bad enough getting creepy messages from randos. lol.

You know, even worse than the randos is getting a message from horrible people (bullies) from high school who would love nothing more than to browse through your life. That has happened to me. Insta-deny.

Randoms on Steam, or other anonymous/semi-anonymous profiles isn't quite so bad. When it's via social media where you're using your real name and other details, it's a lot more invasive.

I don't use Facebook, so no, never. I still have a FB account from back when I entered shitty giveaways that required a Facebook account, but other than that it has no use. Also it has a fake name and no personal info. Aaaaand I don't think I even remember the password at this point.

I don't have Facebook so never had that problem, had it on Steam maybe 2 times, both were bots and obvious ones as well, besides that random people are usually people I know from Discord or here but just don't know that yet :P

I get one every 2 seconds , i'm a musician so i'm a popular target , i have 2 accounts with almost 5k friends on each and they are mostly people working in show bizz music/tv/radio etc... and a good number of star's and family members and the rest are real metal fans that the profiles have been checked out. Sometimes its the stars that are asking me to add them. Just yesterday Floor Jansen singer for Nightwish sent me a friend request. :D

What's Facebook?

Just kidding, but to be honest, I was never a fan of social networks. The only reason that I have made a FB account in the first place was that I had to get in contact with my brother asap and he was not responding to phone calls. 6 years later the only thing that I am using Facebook for is a closed group for our local gaming store.

I got maye a handful of requests from people that I don't know on Skype and all of them were random scamers or simply spam.

You should not accept requests on facebook from strangers.

Why not?

It depends on if the requests are from someone from a group/forum I'm in or if they share a certain interest that I do. Otherwise, I just leave them in Facebook limbo. I sometimes screen some requests to make sure they aren't from bots or catfish, too.

I don't use Facebook so I can't answer, but on the other hand I accept everyone on Steam =P
anyways from my experience one should be definitely careful and cautious.. both for what concerns every content you post on Facebook and also for the people and their private messages and such, nowadays everyone has Internet access and it can be potentially very dangerous so be wary =)

I used to play Mob Wars on Facebook and had over 5,000 friends at one point, I was accepting random friend requests back then because it usually had to do with that game. Once I quit playing it, I had the tiring task of deleting all randoms and have reduced my friends down to 372 and now I'm very strict when it comes to accepting any friend requests. It's mostly males that try to add me and they're ignored for a while and then deleted. =)

Honestly can't see the point of Facebook, et, al. Nothing more than gigantic information sieves into which plenty of stooges are more than willing to pump their private details and transpirings.
