Would end up begging for a shower. I'd feel grubby and nasty after a little while, it would send me insane.

“And by putting someone in bed for a long time, there is also atrophy of the muscle and atrophy of bone density,”

Basically NASA pays you, if you're in perfect health, to get muscle and bone damage which will take alot of time to recover from after that's all over... that is, if you'll ever recover.

I also can't apply anyway since I'm nowhere near US.

Yeah, sounds like hell to me.

Too bad, too. I could use $18,000 for not doing a whole lot. :/

You do recover. It's nothing new. You will just have some fun with the reeducation for walking again etc.

Blargh.... read the article, you have to lie there for 70 days with the bed tipped at an angle with your head down so your body fluids run towards your head.

I'd rather train my martial arts and read my books under a tree than spend 70 days in a bed watching my muscles and bones become atrophied, 18k or not, thank you very much.

And no, it's not a job for the lazy, it's a job for those who are sporty and are going to loose their muscles and all.

And with the pre tests and post tests, it's actually 15 weeks.

I got better things to do with my time, but it's still interesting so thanks :-)

Not like you could go anywhere. You're in a bed the entire time. Austin's nice, in the winter.

I would love to do it. I actually did something like that (50 days) when I broke my leg (yes, I didnt get up in 50 days)

How would I use the bathroom or get food?

I imagine they'd bring you food, and you'd have a catheter/bed pan type situation going on. Getting up kind of ruins the test, so that's how it'd have to work, far as I can tell.

"Subjects need to be very healthy,”
"go through a modified Air Force Class Three physical"
"ninety minutes one on one with a psychologist"
“Once they qualify physically and mentally," ..then.. "we do rigorous physical exercises to test muscle strength and aerobics capacity.”

By the time I'm done with the 70th day in bed, I would probably be super obese

You won't, you will eat what you would eat in space, on the contrary you will loose mass, that's the whole point.

They're being awfully cheap for something that could have a (at best) temporary crippling effect on a person who would need to either do sports for a living or have a naturally very strong body to even qualify. I'm not very interested in biology but as far as I know having your head in a downward angle can be really bad (blood pressure and all)- especially for such an extended period of time. Can't this potentially cause some really nasty diseases? O_o
