FreeSpace, now that's a series that deserved more. The two games that we got were among the best the genre had to offer, particularly FreeSpace 2.

Yes, freespace 1 and 2 (they were actually a part of the original Descent 1 and 2 team, then split and made freespace 1 while the other half made descent 3) was amazing, of the entire Saints Row series I only liked the 3rd... RF was really inovative with groundbreaking (yes it's on purpose) mechanics... the last one I played was... armageddon I think... but I liked summoner so much I got PS2 in order to play Summoner 2 because it wasn't on PC... the only console I ever had after the NES.

Not really making anything original since SR3 (2011!) just rehashing what they had may have contributed.
Even Agents of Mayhem was a half-based "Saints Row, but hero shooter" something.

Agents of Mayhem was a flop, more than half discount in less than 3m from launch and a price cut soon after, 80% off every event (now 90%) didn't help either in sales

Well, the phrase, used by people with common sense, is only used for games that are obviously just pandering to a certain group, with that being their main focus. I don't see anything wrong with disliking that approach. But it seems you're in the extremist woke camp yourself (given how you interpret the phrase). So, yeah, have fun arguing with the extreme side of the anti-woke camp. One thing you lot provide with your silly back-and-forth arguments is entertainment, so that's nice.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Stop creating arguments in your head. "being woke" is in no way meant as "doesn't pretend that only white cis straight males are worth portraying" just so you know. Because so many games with female or black leads have failed just because that.... Not....

But hey, of course pretend its evil white male at fault here..... Frankly I don't know what Sh4dowKill was referencing here so I am not backing his argument.. But your reasoning here is totally out of line.

btw. I did not necro this thread :D noticed its 3 months old just now, but someone else bumped this one

Larian Studios didn't prioritize diversity and bullshit over quality, while SR Remake wasn't close to a real remake from the original game

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that you nailed it. When Volition developed the roadmap for SR, they actively chose to drop the quality in favor of "diversity and bullshit".

I had no idea that anything of these did even depend on the same resources so that they had to set any such priorities but it totally makes sense now, thanks for the elaboration.

Stop, you're giving the videogame industry ideas, next time another buggy mess is released, they'll just say that they were forced to put more diversity in the game and that took resources away from QA testing.

I haven't played the new Saints Row but all the criticism I heard of it was about bad performance, bugs, and a boring primary gameplay loop. Apparently the character customization was the only strong aspect of it, which is kind of a given for the series. I didn't hear anything about it being bad because of it being woke. At this point people are just blaming wokeness instead of looking into what actually goes wrong with projects, also, what even is "woke" in this case?

Yea exactly I was gonna say your character in SR4 had sex with all the male/female crew members (except Keith David I think lol). Nobody complained about that. I guess the word woke wasn't popularized yet back then. The anti-woke crowd is annoying af because they're always accusing EVERYTHING of being woke. Oh there's more minorities than I'm used to. It must be woke. There's a non-heterosexual. It's woke. There are plot points that mirror real life that I disagree with. Woke.

I notice the anti-woke crowd irl who are mainly rightwing are also drawn to conspiracy theories which kinda makes sense to why they see wokeness everywhere b/c they have that constant suspicious mindset combined with racism/homophobia etc. Now every game that comes out has something that's considered woke by these people.

Comment has been collapsed.

The conference calls implied that the preorders actually almost completely covered the costs of production, so I assume it probably wasn't a loss, but it likely wasn't a big success either. So honestly it's likely classic corporate delusions where a profit has to egregious to be considered a mild success. Kinda like what happened with Square Enix.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

While we don't really know, as I don't think they will say real numbers, I kind of doubt fans of saints row saw the fortnite-lite trailer and rushed for pre-orders.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Here's a screenshot of the conference. Basically around 3 weeks before release, the preorders had reached 118% of their target. And considering it's an investment group, not a gaming company that sets those goals, these were guaranteed to be quite ambitious.

View attached image.
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

118% of the "target". We don't know what the target was. 10% of the cost? 1%? 1000 units, and if they had actually had 10.000 they would have said "1000%!!! of the target?"

If the numbers of the pre-orders had been impressive, they would have released real numbers, not that weird 118% of the target. And considering it was before release, maybe Marketing had the 118% number prepared even before they knew the real numbers.

The only cold hard fact was that it sold very poorly on epic, because it debuted on steam with a 67% discount. And we know that Volition closed down. So we have to assume that the results were bad

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I guess fair, but also to assume that it was 10% or 1% is kinda wild. I guess Embracer was just the loosest investment group in the world by expecting preorders that don't cover the cost of the AAA release.

But also debuting on Steam happened when they were already in the process of getting closed down. These decisions don't come in a single day or anything. Plus has any game come to Steam after an Epic exclusive without a notable discount? Kinda like how it happened with everything from UPlay, BattleNet, etc.? I feel like you're looking at simple sales strategies and applying deeper meanings to them.

I mean you've seen what's been happening with Embracer in the past half a decade or so. I'm very surprised that you look at their aggressive expansion and then a rapid contraction as a failure of the subsidiaries, not as the failure of the leadership with their plan in the macro scale.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I believe embracer is in trouble for too many acquisitions, but if they are closing volition, and not any other dev group, is simply because Volition was not profitable, and it means saints row lost money.

Fans hated it, the reviews were extremely poor, and every single report I have seen says it was a flop. Even the CEO himself said he expected a better reception.

That's way I highly suspect of the "118% pre-orders target" . Sounds more like a marketing ploy than the truth.

Wow, lots of memories of their games. The Descent games were awesome, really novel for the time and the Freespace series ate up an embarrassing amount of my high school & uni years, along with Independence War they really were the best "realistic" space Sims I've ever played. I bought the first 2 Red Factions and while I was wowed with the concepts of totally destroyable environments I never thought it was leveraged or deployed in the right way to compensate for how ordinary they were as fps games. Never got round to buying the Saints Row games, regret it a bit, they seem to have a certain batshit crazy quality that I've always enjoyed in games. Oh well, hopefully the staff can find new positions in the industry.

Volition once pioneered game mechanics with Red Faction (detail and destructible environment).

Even Saints Row 1 looked like a potential contender to GTA.

By SR3, the games had become quite goofy, after that it was all downhill aside for the few diehard fans. Their last solid product I played was Red Faction Guerrilla.

The SR reboot is one of the worst things I've played. It seems like it was written by far-left/Socialist college students with little to no life experience (or work experience). Awful storyline, awful characters and awful cringy dialog. And the mechanics + bugs were icing on the turd cake.

This is what 'woke' is. It's putting box ticking and tokenism for a submissive pat on the back from a small group that likely won't consume your product, in lieu of brain (creativity and intelligence) and heart (love and care) that could actually include everyone in an organic and original, not mention well made fashion.
