Hello everybody! I'll steal a little bit of your time with a question.
During this couple of months spent here I have sometimes seen offers about Itch.io games. This seems to be a platform for Indie games.
The point is: I don't know much about Indie games, but I know one thing: sometimes a game that is only scrap, as it cannot get any other label, gets the Indie label. Thus I fear that Itch.io is overwhelmingly full of scrap games, and the rare real gems are really hard to find.
Finally, the question(s): what is your experience with the site? Is there any way to find the hidden gems easily?
Thank you for any answer :D

Is it good?

Yes, it's great!
Nah, not really.
I used to be an adventurer like you, then I took a potato to the knee...

It's how you say it, their client sucks, their searching sucks, but it's great if you are especially into retro, they got nice games there that aren't on steam, desura was alot better.

Mmm, some technical difficulties so... I'll try, and see if I can use it or if it requires too much time to me.
Thank you for the feedback! :D

itch is something quite new, here. still, a truly great experience. might depend on what you're searching for, and what you like. if "playing games" is between your needs, itch.io is then fast, light, fun.

scrap? i didn't find huge differences compared to Steam, but site offers you all the tools you might need to browse, find, collect, discuss.

hidden gems easily? no, and luckily... easy=not hidden enough :P (still, you may find more info at itch.io about something than at Steam. happened to me with Pixeljam, one of my favorite devs)

plus, its client is truly a little gem, i use it often, it just works (even if site is more handy to browse/search). you can download free games/redeemed ones, play in-browser games, and browse the internet!!1! cause, yes, itch.io client browser actually works...;-)

Grazie per il feedback! :D

scrap? i didn't find huge differences compared to Steam

The difference is that I usually don't look for Indie games on Steam (most of times are Indie games that find me, I don't really know how XD), thus I don't really often find myself overwhelmed with that part of the Steam universe

still, you may find more info at itch.io about something than at Steam

This part seems nice and very useful in order to find interesting games :D

there have been reports of devs revoking paid keys and doing a runner

Mmm, not nice... Too much freedom maybe, can bring to unpleasant situations.
Thank you for the suggestion! :)

But steam keys can get revoked too.

Btw. https://www.steamgifts.com/discussion/rob36/free-new-thread-itchio-games-last-man-kicking-orbital-brawl-koi-puncher-mmxviii

Groupees sometimes have itch.io keys in their bundle, they usually aren't bad to get some more decent games through there.

Thank you! I'm a young gamer, thus it seems that Desura closed before I started exploring this world. :D

I love it. I go there every day to see what's new. You never know what you'll find. I've found several obscure gems that way and quite a lot of short, fairly simple games with fresh and interesting ideas and concepts behind them.

I'm a huge indie game lover, but I've never used itch. If a game which started there is really good it usually ends up on Steam sooner or later. Also, there's more than enough hidden gems on Steam to take all of my free time, so I see no point in delving into another store ;)

The 80/20 rule works everywhere, in an open indie platform like Itch.io the bar even lower and many will just drop a first try shit. But you can find some good games and some even real gems that worth even paying for.

Yeah, that's what I fear, the proportion between good and bad. Thank you! :)

Well my opinion is that itch.io is doing many things right on the developer side, compared to some other stores I've seen. It's more flexible, improves fast, gives you a lot of freedom (for example, you can import kickstarter followers, add different price tiers with rewards, have built in devlog and so on).

On the user side, it can be cool - you get drm-free download, steam key, blah blah... following devs years before steam added that feature, more and more "medium/big" sized games recently... but historically, it's been a VN heaven... and steam took that away sort of with direct... soooo... I dunno... I've bought a few games there but it's not in my focus tbh as a customer.

...a VN heaven

ah ha! didn't know that. can't speak as a dev, still can understand what your saying. being smaller and faster is maybe better for a dev...

as "customers" i think we are a kinda "special type", at SG. but the more i browse it, the more i find little good games, interesting devs at Twitter, news and info you can't find at Steam...

is like having a smaller but good and different point of view at gaming world, so i truly like it

I really like indie games, because I like to believe they are great for testing out new ideas or gameplay mechanics, things we would never see in big titles. I've used itch and other sites like indiedb quite a lot a few years ago, however since my Steam backlog is growing, I have been focusing on Steam indie games lately.
Obviously most indie games will not be great, I would say most of them are not even that good, however I really enjoy them, since I accept them for what they are.
If you try games with a similar mindset on itch, you will be just fine, but do not expect great quality or content all the time.
Itch is a great platform if you want to provide feedback for a game or ask the devs something too.

Well, thank you, you reminded me why I shouldn't start seriously the exploration of itch.io: I have a huge backlog too XD

There are some youtube bloggers that specialise in finding itch.io gems and do regular updates on new ones. Sorry as I can't give you a name as these people randomly appeared in my list from youtube. I don't use itch myself so I never subscribed to any of them but you should be able to find them.

I would say it's quite easy to find "hidden gems" if you like a certain kind of game. Are you into bizarre, artsy, experimental stuff? Do you like one-off games you can finish in under twenty minutes? If so, Itch is perfect for you. (Plus, most of them are pay-what-you-want.)

Some longer and more polished games are only available on Itch, like Subserial Network, which has garnered some nice reviews. A small number of mainstream games like Dead Cells or Night in the Woods find their way onto Itch as well. (Sometimes you just get a Steam key, sometimes you get DRM-free, sometimes both.) If you like supporting developers, then it's completely worth it to buy on Itch, because they let devs decide how much of the money from each sale they want to keep versus how much goes to the site.
