I had a few pets in my life: four hamsters, a turtle, couple of cats. It's always sad to see them go. :(

This is Precious the cat.
Some time ago my sister and her boyfriend were sharing a house with a nutter and his wife. There next door neighbour was an alcoholic with a pet cat that was mostly left to its own devices. That cat had two litters of kittens before my sister took it to the vets to have it 'fixed' because the alcoholic appeared to be unable to take any responsibility for it. Shortly afterwards the alcoholic blew up his house and was arrested on terrorism charges, although it turned out that was a gas explosion caused by carelessness.
The kittens mostly lived in an abandoned factory behind where my sister lived, although my sister used to put food out for them and two in particular were quite affectionate. One day my sister caught the nutter she shared the house with shouting at the kittens because they had dug up his herb garden and that turned into a blazing row during which she smashed the nutters brand new giant plasma TV. That led to my sister leaving the house and me losing a lot of work as I'm a sound engineer (amongst other things) and the nutter ran the agency that supplied sound engineers locally.
My sister took two of the semi-feral kittens with her (Precious and her brother Spencer) which were temporarily housed with me. Although I prefer dogs and don't really like cats Precious has remained with me ever since - even through the terrible year of the Juggalo. Spencer went on to live happily with my sister at her new house but was sadly recently killed by a hit and run driver.
Precious is a small cat with an unusually long tail. She isn't especially tame but likes to watch TV with me and to 'help' when I'm playing Pokemon on my 3DS. We have moved to a more rural area in recent years and she doesn't appear to understand that not all of the wildlife is there simply for her amusement. She likes stalking and pouncing on deer and cows. She chases foxes out of the garden but at least has the sense to stay clear of the badgers. She militantly ignores squirrels these days after provoking the furious wrath of a mother squirrel. She briefly took to the skies after pouncing on Captain Jacqui the local sparrowhawk and seems keen to do it again.

I found this cute little turtle on beach when I was a kid(few months ago), loved it took care of it and brought it to our summerhouse I was so happy that day until I felt something warm on my hand when I had it on my hand, It was some red liquid(guess it was on period?), I felt it was so insolent and had to punish it, I rushed to terrace near solar panels, put it backwards there and few days later It was still backwards and empty and I still use Its shell as a war trophy.
Moral of the story; Don't fuck with me.

Oh, sure... You censor the human's face, but your rat's face is now plastered all over the internet! Can you imagine when this poor little guy tries to find work?
"You seem qualified, but we have a picture of you with some shady human character."

I guess I could tell a story about every single pet I've ever had. But the most recent story would be about one of my mum's cats. You know, my parents had cats for many years, up to five at a time, but when the last of those five died, my mum said she was too sad about them dying and didn't want a new one. And they didn't have one for about two years. At that time, my dad was very ill, and my mum spend all her time caring for him, and a friend of hers realized that it was all too much for her to bear. So, though she knew that my mum didn't want a new cat, one day she brought her a little one, a sweet black and white princess kitty girl ... and my mum wasn't able to say no. A couple of days afterwards, my dad's nurse brought another little kitty, a black tomcat. She told my mum that the owner didn't want him and was about to bring him to the pet shelter. And again, my mum wasn't able to say no. So both the little kitties stayed, and luckily they got along perfectly from the first day.
I was happy for my mum, but even more for the dad. Both the little cats loved him like crazy, most probably because he was in bed all day, and they could slumber next to him without being interrupted. The cats were the only thing that made my dad smile during the last months of his live. He enjoyed petting them a lot, and they enjoyed the same. When my dad died, the little black kitty stayed on his bed and remained there while I sat there for the wake all night.
After my dad's death, the cats were the only thing that kept my mum going. They were the ones making sure she got out of bed in the morning and cared for them and along that for herself. When I had to return home (I'm living a couple of hours of journey away from my mum), I knew I could leave her and she would get along, and most of that came from her having to care for the cats.
They still live with her. They are grown up cats now, almost five years old. Especially the black one is charming everyone as he's very much into making contact with humans. He probably thinks that my mum's garden is a playground just for him, and he's trying to make everyone play outside with him. The only thing he hasn't learned, yet, and probably won't ever learn, is why people are so reluctant to do so when it's raining or during the night.

It's hard to lose someone so close to you and noone can replace your dad, but as you said at least your mother have someone near, someone she can take care of. Best wishes to you, your mom and kitties!
Thanks for a story!

Well, they will not clean leftovers of food is they eat it outside cages. But if we are talking about natural needs, they try to do that inside cage (they have litterbox). If they are asleep or VERY glad to see you, they can piss at place :) Plus you will learn not to throw you things all over house. Everything has to be in place, or you can find shirt or blanket with a few new holes...
Except that rats are obsessed with cleanliness... they groom themselves and each other very often.

Thank you for the informations, you really learned me. I can't have a domestic animal but I always wanted to have a rodent.
I already saw a guinea pig "VERY glad to see me", so I didn't even suspect the last info about cleanliness of rats! ^^
I guess that when you talk about not to throw your things all over house it includes your desk or even your shelves because they can climb? I mainly think about my books if in an hypothetical future I get a rat.

They can't just climb walls, but you should be aware, that they are very smart animals.
Just look at this short video i found on youtube.
No place is safe, unless it's locked :) One time i found my rat on the top of 2m high drawer... he got there the same way as shown on video.
Also, some of them are very jumpy. One of my first two female rats was able to jump about 1m horizontally, and something like 0.5m up.

Yep, i lost my rat once, after 3 hours of searching she ended up just sleeping in a drawer under pile of towels :)

Pet stories, I think I've got a good one.... About 12 years ago now, my family bought a beagle puppy, and he was literally the cutest thing ever. We loved that dog so much, very affectionate and playful.
The whole internet/ social thing was just starting to take off and like a lot of other people I was on mySpace. And it was those naive days where everyone was friendly and you could message complete strangers on the other side of the world and become 'friends'. So I was messaging lots of people all around the world and chatting to them on IM, a lot of whom I still chat to these days. Then one day I found a girl with a picture of herself and her own beagle puppy as her profile picture. So I instantly wrote to her along the lines of "I'm not a creep, but I saw you had a beagle puppy in your picture. We also have a beagle and we love it". She was in another country and I literally just thought it would be fun to chat with her.
This year it will be ten years since I married that girl... and I am still very much in love with her. Two years ago we moved into a house with a big enough garden that we could finally get a beagle of our own. He's a very acrobatic and playful dog and we love him (as do the kids).
On a sad note, my families original beagle had to be put to sleep a few weeks ago as he had cancer and was getting really sick. So we were sad about that, he was literally the best wingman ever.
This picture is of our own beagle as puppy.

After my previous puzzle-discussion i thought it would be nice to share some stories about pets...
Please, post your stories...
One of my rats wasn't just bought or gifted, but found on a street. One sunny spring day started for me with a call from friend.
His GF was going to work, when saw some strange tiny white spot moving in a grass. Surprisingly, that spot turned out to be a little fancy rat.
Knowing that number of roaming cats in that area goes through the roof, she tried catching poor fella to save him from tragic end.
Fur-ball wasn't thinking he could stumble upon such a kind heart (after probably being thrown away by his previous owners), and bite her finger to blood. After that furious resistance he was "imprisoned" in a small birdcage and handed to me the next day!
He had some scratches on the back of his feet and a bite on the end of tail, so we visited a clinic to ensure he doesn't have other, more serious problems. Thus, i ended up being an owner of approx. 4 weeks old rat, afraid of everything but food.
For the few weeks he was like - gimme food and keep your filthy hands off me. But after several months we became real friends.
For me that friendship best described as being a scratching machine. For him - constantly trying to steal something tasty from my plate, but in return grooming and licking my hands. Sometimes he liked to climb on me and watch how i play PC from a shoulder.
If i was away from town for more than a day he greeted me with an accusing look and picturesque view of his butt.
Unfortunately on one of checkups doctor found a tumor and after a month of struggle to save him he passed away.
He wasn't the most affectionate rat of mine, but the most unique-tempered for sure.
