So my boss recently approved a 5 month leave from work. My girlfriend was able to receive a similar leave from her employer. I've been wanting to do a prolonged backpacking trip for a long time, so this seemed like a perfect opportunity. I also paid off the last of my massive debt this week. That in itself is a reason to celebrate! Lesson I learned is that credit cards are not the same as cash. :(

Countries we plan to visit so far include India (yoga teacher training for a month), Thailand, Taiwan (to visit the Global Tea Hut) and France to visit friends who own a small farm. If you've ever been to these countries or nearby regions, please share your tales of adventure!

I've put together a train for those interested in following along! Boarding Pass - Gate 22

*Edit I've received several blacklists since posting this thread, maybe because of the sgtools requirements on the train? I'm sorry if anyone is being left out. If you're having an issue getting on board, please let me know. I've already adjusted the requirements once and am willing to do so again.
I added a gift for those who couldn't get past the sg tools check.

*Edit 2 In the rush of packing and getting to the airport I haven't had time to reply to all your comments and suggestions, but rest assured I highly appreciate all the input and thanks! I'll update over the next few days (internet connection permitting) and maybe add another gift or two. ✈️

Well my girlfriend lived in Bangkok for two years, so we'll spend at least a few days there. We'd like to spend a fair amount of time checking out the southern islands, I've heard Railay is pretty cool. If you have any suggestions for the country, let me know. We haven't planned too much of Thailand yet as we are in India until the beginning of March.

I guess what I can give is watch out for scam and thieves if you're going to tourism locations. Place like Phuket is really well known for scam like overpriced foods even among Thai people, some usually charge extras from foreigners. There are news about foreigners got assaulted for theft from time to time so better not wear/show too much gold necklace or something like that. Maybe your girlfriend already know about this but better safe than sorry. <3

I live in Pattaya now and was living in Phuket last year. Both would be great for "party town" Thailand, if you want that. Railay is great for the beach/climbing atmosphere, but it's up near Krabi. Phi Phi is more the island atmosphere, but it's kind of overtouristed garbage, in my opinion (and I worked there).

Taipei is also an interesting foray into Asian cities, and will contrast heavily with Bangkok. Enjoy!

I've been to Thailand and Taipei, Taiwan. I don't have much specific advice, but in general...

Bangkok - avoid Tuk-Tuk drivers. The majority have a scam going on. You might be able to find a decent one, but I don't think it's worth the hassle. Use your higher state of consciousness from the yoga trip to help you zone out and ignore people trying to sell you things, get you into bars, or beg on the streets. Observe the chaos, it'll make the trip to the islands you have planned even sweeter!

Taiwan - I'm not sure if you'll be in Taipei, but I'm sure it applies to Taiwan as a whole - enjoy the food! It's great. Steamed dumplings, dim-sum, noodles, try anything you can get your hands on. The night markets are nice to wander around too.

...thanks for the train. Couple of wishlist games in there for me :-)

Believe me it was no cakewalk. I had to work really hard the past two years to pay off all my debts and get organized. None of these things are really my strength, I used to run away from dealing with anything difficult. If I can get my shit together anyone can!
