Although I read that discussion and almost every single comment I prefer not to take part in that kind of discussion.
As a previous poster told "people are just people" - they behave the way they learned it from previous generations. This implies how people react when they're stressed and how to take care of stress situations.
Also almost any facts depend on the point of view. It might not affect all countries but in parts of germany women actually earn more then men (news article in german) if you just take people in consideration that work full time (average wage). There are normally more women working part time than men because we still got the old system in mind "men got to work while women take care of the children" and talking for myself if both of the parents could choose who'd work part time it would be my wife even though I'd like to spend more time with my son as much as she does.

I'm sorry, I don't read german, but I'll sure try to find other article in french or english. Since the OP was mostly about UK, I took UK stats when I could. But of course, every country has different stats, because people think differently.
Wage gap is actually difficult to monitor, because as you said, we have to take account of full time / part time job, which depend of others criteria as well, etc... An issue cannot be summed up so easily, or it would have been solve since a long time.
Your situation is exactly what I was trying to say: each sex has its "task", and you cannot swap because society is "not ready", and I think it's a shame. Some woman would like to have a successful career, but they are expected to take care of the children, and some men would like to be home dad but can't because they would be see as failures...

This started as an answer, and then I realize that I wrote a page and a half on word, and decided that it would be a shame to end up at the bottom of a thread, where no one would read it. Yes, I am egocentric like that, I like that stuff on which I have passed time on it are being read. So here it is.
