Halo 3 for PC?
Uh, okay. Is this piracy? Apologies if it's a dumb question. Never played Halo.

Ohhh, I see. Thanks for the explanation mister cat.

You really have no clue what you're talking about do you?
Halo Online was an official port running on a modified Halo 3 engine for PC. It was only available in Russia while this is a modified version for anyone to play. It's still piracy, but it's not some unofficial port.

Is this thing based on that Halo MMOFPS that was launched in russia? I remember it being on the same engine.

This is piracy so I would remove the link from here before you get banned. It doesn't matter if they are making any money or not. It was put out by someone other then the IP owner.
Also if this is caught on Steamgifts, you could get the site shut down.

actually, it is in the terms of service
"SteamGifts will terminate a visitor's access to and use of the Website if, under appropriate circumstances, the visitor is determined to be a repeat infringer of the copyrights or other intellectual property rights of SteamGifts or others."

Problem is, if the staff decide to enforce it here, it'll be completely arbitrary unless they also enforce it on all links to Abandonia and My Abandonware and such. I don't think it's gonna happen. These are clever people we're talking about, not copyright enforcement drones.
In fact, the amount of comments here shouting "Piracy!" is a bit shocking. Enforcing copyright on abandonware is so incredibly shady that I could compare it to, say, someone calling out a politician for taking bribes, and getting berated by the public because there's a legal loophole allowing it, so it must be okay! This is the level of delusion I feel has been reached after years of pro-copyright and anti-piracy propaganda.
For real, guys, you don't need to go around trying to enforce unfair laws that hurt your interests.

I personally think that taking about piracy or even defending it is all right, completely fair play.
The issue here is directly linking to it. If this was just letting people know about the game and pointing in the general direction of where to find it (like saying go torrent it) this wouldn't be a problem. But putting the link in here is not ok in my opinion.

Okay, but why? I've seen this line of thought before, but never the reasoning behind it.
Also, I've been suspended from this site before for encouraging someone to pirate a game that wasn't available in their region (or had content cut, don't remember). So, at least back then, it wasn't acceptable. Hopefully that's changed.

Yeah, encouraging someone to pirate a game is definitely not allowed. Is like the difference between talking and arguing about something illegal and telling somebody to go do that thing that's illegal. I don't know how it works in other places but over here that can be considered a crime in some cases.
Imagine the following case (a bit extreme but it serves as an example): you are free to question why murder is a crime and even argue that it shouldn't be considered as such, it's immoral but not illegal. But you can't encourage a guy to murder somebody, that's a crime, people are condemned to prision for that.

I could be wrong and would appreciate correction if so but from what I recall reading many years ago when I worked in the industry it went something like this:
To be classified as abandonware a software product must meet certain criteria:
1) The developer AND the production team must publically state that they are officially abandoning the project and give permission for others to carry on development. Costs are usually not involved.
2) If they have not stated as such and a period of 5 or more years has passed a new developer may ask to continue the work - be it for commercial or GNU use. If given permission, it may then be passed on as abandonware. Costs may be involved.
3) If there commercial and intellectual copyright has expired. (Unlikely due to the relative newness of technology and the length of Copyrights).
4) If the source code is published by the developer for public use, and no part has been reverse engineered. (Usually accompanied with a GNU license)
5) If the source code has been reverse engineered with the permission of the developer.
6) If the main code is reverse engineered before 1999, and expanded privately for commercial or private use. This one was tricky but applied to a number of games that have private servers such as Ultima Online, Everquest and a few others. There seemed to be a loophole that many people were using that was upheld in a few courts because reverse engineering some software was not illegal at the time and allowed gifted coders to create their own servers but still use modified versions of the original software if it did not violate the terms of service of the original provider. Have you noticed that over the last 20 years you now have to click 'I accept' more often when installing/playing games than pre 1999? That's because of this.

I was really hoping for a nonsensical rebuttal when you were presented with a real argument.
If you had taken just a few minutes to do a bit of research as opposed to thinking you knew it all, you could have saved yourself a lot of time defending your false facts. Although it's not a great source, Wikipedia would have surely pointed you in the right direction as would the sites you mentioned earlier.
"Since the software is no longer sold or supported, the copyright holders are not directly harmed in any way. This is why abandonware sites are, for the most part, ignored by the law. The distribution of copyrighted software however is, and will allways be, illegal!"
"We allow you to download old games for free, but we do not take any responsibility for downloads considered illegal in your country. Please try to buy the game first : GoG.com, Steam, Amazon or eBay may be selling your game."
I do acknowledge that a lot of your opinion can come from personal experience and depending on where you live, this certainly can differ. A quick search of "Bulgaria piracy" shows quite a few interesting links so perhaps that could be at play as well.

It might be an abandonware but it's not not legal to share/mod/use it without owner approval ... Kinda what is called piracy, I think. I think it would be safe to remove the link as Gwarsbane suggested.

This seems to fall more in the piracy side that what would normally be ok for SG.
While this is a mod and those are on the safe side of the argument, distribution of a mod usually doesn't include all the necessary files to run by itself, and that's because they would need the main game to be pirated and cracked in order to run. But then we have the issue that the main game can no longer be obtained be legal ways. This is kind of a mess, but a most certainly illegal mess.

Sorry, but apparently abandonware still falls under the rules of piracy as the companies still own the rights to said titles and intellectual properties. It also falls under the rules of Orphan Works which also cover any copywriten materials such as software.

Considering the game was never officially released, and its assets still belong to the company, and may still be under development (repurposed), nope
But yeah, iI was looking at the DMCA exemption for abandonware; server-side MMOs are not included

Just because it's not legally considered abandonware by the DMCA doesn't mean it's not abandonware; by the definition of abandonware, the project clearly qualifies, regardless of legal status (the DMCA does not define abandonware categorically, it just offers some legal frameworks for kinds of software, some of which are heavily contested by the abandonware community).

Halo Online is just the multiplayer part of Halo 3, that was going to be released as a free to play title only for Russia, as a test by MS.
Eldewrito is the mod that enables the game to be played without the need of MS servers (which have been shut down since December) & removes the load-out system.

Its fun! I hope they can release a campaign someday :D

Could have just linked to the Reddit page instead of straight up providing a download link you know, just to be safe
Sharing the eldewrito mod is not illegal but, sharing the game files made by Microsoft is definitely not legal.
MS took down the eldewrito mod once last year because, at that time the Halo Online exe was bundled with the download. After they removed it, MS didn't really care & the mod is alive still now.
Even the reddit page has this rule:-
"Do not post any direct links to download Halo Online"

I love Halo! I might give it a try to this, thanks a lot :]

Yes Forge lets you create your own custom maps and game modes. Valhalla is a spiritual successor to Blood Gulch. Forging on the new maps would be cool, Reactor and Edge are the completely new maps I think, all the rest are just Halo 3 maps (Ice Box is a Turf remake from Halo 2 tho)

Why is there no "I don't like generic FPS games from a smug developer" option in the poll?
Also, this is pure piracy, lol.
Comment has been collapsed.
that's exactly it. it was a big deal on consoles. they didn't have shooters before. at least no good ones. remember the horrible shooters on N64? ^^ but for pc standards, Halo was nothing special, really. the pc started the whole shooter thing and had premium shooters pretty much all the time. so Halo was just one more good one.

I beg to differ. The original Xbox had awesome FPS games like Doom 3, Riddick, RTCW.
Also, to go back in time, the original PlayStation had titles like Disruptor or Powerslave.
The N64 had Duke Nukem 64 and Doom 64, both of which are awesome FPS games.
