what is your opinion on gay campers? also, it appears that they have a website. http://gaycampers.com/images/camper_top3.gif

I'm a gay camper. I'll stand on top of the building, making sure I'm mentally prepared for my next move. I take my rifle, twist my body, take a step forward and jump. I'll do spins in the air, putting the stock to my shoulder quickly, pulling the trigger, resulting in a kill. When I land I will yell "YOLO THAT SHIZ HAD SUM SWAGGITY SWAG SWAG YO"

Are you talking classics or 3 and NV? I ask because I never gave stealth or sniping a try in the classics, curious to know how well it worked.
Comment has been collapsed.
Actually, I was talking more about the classic ones, but 3 and NV are good as well =)
In old ones, when you poured more than 150 points in Small Arms, and get a few crit perks, you were simply unstoppable =) At about level 20(IIRC) almost nothing could even get close to you before getting shredded =)

That's fantastic! I played through the original Fallout multiple times. I might have to give it another go and try sniping. Were the stealth mechanics the same as Fallout Tactics?

Oh yeah. Just Cause 2 should be on my list. Some fun long-range stuff there, too.

AP has long-range options? Man, it's already on my wishlist, but I guess I'm gonna have to spring for it sooner rather than later.

Deus Ex. Stealth + Nonlethal is always a nice challenge

I need to revisit DE. I had just barely cracked the game, but wasn't feeling it.
Need to go back to it.
Gonna finish Batman AA first and then maybe try a suggestion here or maybe go back to Dishonored.

Several things, but of most importance to me is the re-worked boss battles, so if you specialize in stealth or hacking, you can still reach victory.

Interesting. Never was interested in killing-for-hire games, but I'll look into it.

Far cry 3 could be played quite stealthy in parts I think. Good game overall.

I loved Thief: Deadly Shadows, so I'm excited for the reboot.

Can I pretty much take out most folks from afar in the game?
Comment has been collapsed.
meh... The whole idea in the Thief series to remain unnoticed. If you're really good, you don't take out anybody, and they never even know you were there until they go to count the silverware.

I'm sure I'll love that, too, when I get round to it.
Thx.
Still interested in ranged stealth for now.
Pure stealth is a beautiful thing, too.

I don't multiplay at all, so I'm all ears for SP games. I should've specified.
Most of these so far seem to be SP campaigns, at least.

I share your feelings about snipers in MP, not because they are long ranged, but because many people tend to run around "quickscoping" which goes against everything a sniper is. If there is a game that makes everything a sniper is in RL rewarding i'd love to know about it.
By that, i mean time it would take to set up, taking into account the wind, having a spotter etc
Comment has been collapsed.
Being a sniper or being a marksman? As most sniper roles in MP games are more like marksman. Although I like the 'sniping' a lot. Getting some place probably no one is gonna look for you, pick of some targets, but you usually tend te be less of an asset to the team, even compared to running around like a headless chicken and only making kills occasionally.
But yeah, I would love to be able to play a 'real' sniper kinda role.

Be sure to give Call of Pripyat with the Misery mod a try, but be sure to keep moving between covers, enemies can chuck nades like goddamn sportsball stars.

LURK is great, I'm waiting on 1.2 to pick SoC up again.

Main problem with stalker is the 'AI activate distance' or something. I think they only show from what, 150 meters? Outside of that distance they only exist in the migrate patterns (migrating from those bases to others).
Resulting in the effect of climbing in a high tower, taking out your sniper with scope, seeing no one, run into the same direction, run straight into enemy you couldn't see moments ago.
I am overstating it a bit, but that is what kept it back for me as playing it very sniper oriented.
Sometimes you could run towards an area and get them spawned, and then run back to your sniper position. But this kind of behaviour defeats the purpose of being sniper a bit doesn't it?
It's a bit like viewing distance, only it applies only to the AI (you can see people spawn, take out their gun, or put it back on their back).

Yeah, it was for me. As I would have liked to make use of the long range of the snipers more (especially with mods that give you really nice sniper rifles).
I had my fair amount of fun playing though with the Stalker games. Even if I didn't have it on Steam back then (I think it would have surpassed my playtime on Fallout 3).
Espcially as in STALKER, every gun has it's own stats. So if you have someone scoped, and accounted for bulletdrop (which every bullet has, depending on the muzzle velocity, silenced weapons have the tendency to drop the most, can't recall this quickly if every gun, or bullet type had it's own stats, or what I actually think, that they where combined) it is still possible you will miss the target.
It's not the poinmt and click most games give you. And, what I also really liked, was the fact that guns use ammo of a certain calibre. Meaning, if you just killed someone, with a completely different gun, but it fires the same rounds your weapon does, you can loot his ammo. To the point that 7.62x54 ammo can be used in both MG's and sniper rifle's (although I think you need mods for this particular example). And different bullet tupes, so 'standard' ammo, hollow point, armor piercing...
So in that regard, it is a truly great game (with mods mostly I admit). But yeah, the spawn thing really is a downside the game has.

try Dark Messiah.
mainly known (or rather unknown due to people having a memory for two years at best) for close combat slaughterfest,
but it has pretty good stealth, bow combat (even has rope arrows), some physics based magic spells etc.
due to the game being source engine, the physics are funny to play with.

Arma 3.
Try being a sniper against real players on a map the size of a real island.
You gonna understand what hidding is all about, what shadows and sun mean, what the noise of your rifle means, and yes, this little cloud of dust when you shoot ? It can mean your death. And all the players will duck, hide, think "if i was a sniper where would i be" and try to flank you. Or they gonna call someone to come in a vehicle with thermal vision.
With the mods, you can expect the wind to matter, meaning that being on a hill a kilometer away might not be the best option.
Comment has been collapsed.
Man, it sounds fun, but I'm not a MP kind of a dude for numerous reasons.
Comment has been collapsed.
Your call, but sniping people who will actually hide, try tricks like showing themselves for half a second to hear the bullet hiss and see the bullet impact to detect your position is way different from shooting bots/AI.
You will never want to come back to solo sniping.
In arma 3 if you want to be a good sniper you actually need a mate to help you identify the targets and their distance and provide security and perhaps bring some more ammo.
That moment when you have been waiting super long expecting a hostile heli to land at a given position, and you shoot the heli pilot just before they land, and then just shoot some more guys, and you cannot shoot everybody since they have already hidden, but you are keeping them down and useless while your team can be useful ( or you can ask a mate to drop a few shells on them, but it wouldn't be the same kind of fun )
One time i was hiding in a building, and for 30 minutes or so i sniped a whole lotta bunch of guys who were seriously annoyed that they could not find me. In the end they sent a vehicle towards my position and a small group got out to clean the village building by building, i throw 2 grenades, one dies, 2 or 3 are injured, they get back in the car an gtfo, i wait till they are a bit more far and gtfo as well before they begin to drop mortar shells on the village now that they know where i am. 15 minutes later i found a suitable position and i annoy them again, immobilising about 5 guys trapped in the village which ruins they were inspecting, until a vehicle comes to extract them under smoke cover.

I have had some unpleasant experiences in MP gaming over the years. Especially when learning a new game.
On top of that, I have to drop out of sessions with regularity, since I've got two young kids in the house.
Anyway, it does sound interesting. Thank you and if I change my mind, I'm coming to find you for an intro session. :)

I tried playing Far Cry 3 with pure stealth, but the shit-tier saving system stopped me from doing that.
In FC2 you could quicksave and try the same mission with different approaches. The constantly respawning enemies took the fun out of that, though.

Seriously, nobody even mentions Sniper: Ghost Warrior 1 and 2?! they both revolve around long range sniping, and in my opinion, they were actually great simulators. I can't recall another game that took into account the wind and the distance to calculate the trajectory of the bullet. I really likes Sniper Elite V2 and NZA, but as a closer-to-reality sniper game, i think Ghost Warrior series is far superior

Lots of awesome suggestions, but here's one I don't think has been mentioned yet. It's older, 2D isometric, and turn-based.
Jagged Alliance 2.
Stealth is hard, but usually possible. Knife kills (regular, or throwing), gas grenades of various types (make sure you're wearing a gas mask), silencer attachments for most guns and a silent sniper rifle in the Unfinished Business add-on (there might be some in the fan-made 1.13 mod too, but I can't recall for certain), walking/running/crawling loudness, night missions where light affects visibility (and there are chemical break lights you can toss), camouflage, and probably a couple of other things I've forgotten. I don't think you can easily fist-fight in stealth (I think it's just too loud), but I've never really done a martial arts-focused character. And I'm 99% certain you wouldn't be able to stealth against the bloodcats (tigers, essentially).

This game is on my radar anyway. Thanks for the insight!

I'd say Sniper Elite without a doubt suits your criteria, focusing on Sniper Rifles and stealth. Another game i'd recommend is Dishonored, although there arent sniper rifles, it's a game that focuses a lot on stealth as you are an assassin. You'll also be armed with a set of weapons that both allow you to drop your targets at longer ranges and short range combat.

Considering I played it that way, I'd say The Elder Scrolls V - Skyrim.

Yeah. My current build there (been forever since I've played) is a stealth archer. Couple of frustrating moments playing that way so far, but overall pretty enjoyable.
Archer for you, or a mage of some kind or something else entirely?

Ty. Thorough list.
When I go back to Dishonored, I'm going to have to figure out the ranged thing. I love that game, and love trying not to kill anyone (I'm not that good, yet). :)

Basically where stealth is rewarded, but that you have an option to play a ranged character all/most of the time.
Love to hear your thoughts.
I enjoyed parts of the first Mass Effect with the sniper rifle, likewise with Borderlands 2 (I'm VERY early in gameplay on that one, though).
The Batman series has its moments as well with drop snags (or whatever they're called) and remote detonations. I realize the drop-down isn't long-range, but it has a similar effect (and not at all realistic, since the dumb thugs don't ever look up. Lol.).
