Is Planetary Annihilation worth it or not? I really like that genre of game, especially RTS, but it does cost a bit of money and I've already spent about $40 on this sale. I've been contemplating it for a while now and was wondering if I should get it. I would really appreciate your feedback.

Disclaimer: I'm terribad at RTSs. My APM are pathetic. My brain has trouble micromanaging everything and translating that into a logical queue of physical input.

That being said... It's worth it, IMO.

The AI will kick your ass until you can get your APM up and learn to keep build-queues always on for assets. Playing with friends makes for an easier learning experience. But the thing that will probably make it all worth $17 is that moment you crash a moon into your opponent's side of a planet. Extinction Level Event technology. Good, good stuff.

It's great, but you better hurry up while its on sale if you don't want to pay $50 for it later. Its honestly worth the $17 it is now and its still early access.

I have no idea, but I will say it's a pretty fucking sick cover picture for the game.

It looks really cool and its something I'm definitely keeping in my wishlist for the future, but I think its worth waiting until its finished, just in case.

Plus, I tend to suck at RTS games, even if I do really enjoy them. I've just never gotten used to equating strategies with keyboard controls, so my execution is sufficiently delayed as to make my tactics useless.

Personally I would boycott it until launch due to their latest move... Releasing freaking physical copy of EA-title...

the game is complete crap. there are people who defend anything beleive me from a massive RTS fan the whole game is a lie all their promo vids are a lie

the game also has horrible always online drm so if you disconnect from the net you cant play
also their tutorials that are all streamed from youtube and their mods delete anything negative against the game in the forum

Honestly mate its not worth it.
Especially if you play TA or supreme commander, its a very poor game i regret I ever bought it.
If your looking for an in depth RTS game from the looks of their videos just buy Supreme Commander Forged Alliance if you havn't already.

I haven't been following it too closely but I'm pretty sure the always online DRM is mainly while it's pre-release. i.e. even single player games are run on their servers at the moment, however that won't be the case at release. There might still be some DRM at the end but it might be good to research it yourself than take this guy's word for it. He doesn't exactly sound unbiased.

I'm a big Supcom player too and I can say that's certainly the better game at the moment but then it's also actually released and has had many years of patches, mods and expansions to go with it. PA on the other hand is still months from release.

Well. Im a big RTS fan too. I actually payed to get starcraft 2 the opening week, totally worth.

Now, comparing prices and putting starcraft 2 as a reference, PA falls short on graphics, cannot tell you about the gameplay itself though. Still in development. Totally not worth 50$, not even 40 to my view.

But being at 17 on discount, it may be worth it. But the online DRM its a bad point to the game.

I play it sometimes...

what I like and dislike short:

Pro:

planets, you can attack and get attacked from all side...even from above

solar-system, put some engines on a moon and crash a planet

simple but nice gfx

con:

far less units compared to god old annihilation and supreme commander

physics?...no planets and moons on rails....even if you crash or move a moon

physics? settings like temperature /atmosphäre don´t influence anything

tech-tree...not really, just advanced factories for advanced units

very simple resource-management

everything is server side and sometimes they are f*cking slow

you can´t make a game with units-restrictions

systemeditor has still many bugs, not all build-able systems are playable...sometimes units can´t move from x to y

Yes it is still in development...but we don´t have to expect many changes until release....they are now in late gamma.
Should you buy it cause you would like to try it...maybe.
Should you buy it cause it´s on sale? no...... there will be other deals in the future :-)

I regret I bought it...( with those green-marked future-features in their forums I have deceived myself )

I would stick with supreme commander and it's expansion forged alliance (if you don't already have it, great game and same people who made planetary annihilation).

Personally $17 is still a bit too much for me for "early access", it's still an incomplete game and won't be as enjoyable as when it is completely and properly done.

But ultimately, go with what your heart/gut tells you, it will know what to do.

Not worth it at the moment. Go for SupCom or Zero-K.
