Do you watch Games Done Quick?
I live my life between GDQ events. It's sad but true. I donated so much from witwix boshy run :)

My son and I have some great bonding during SGDQ in particular because he's out of school. I love watching every minute of it. This summer I won't be attending but the stream should be great.

Looks like there won't be any moderation done this week ;_;
Thanks =_=

Never heard of it, but could be interesting. Thanks for the heads up!

It's worth watching, especially if a game interests you. Definitely check out the calendar :)

Bumping since it just started! Hype! Hopefully we get a SGDQ humble bundle.

The bundle or the SGDQ? It doesn't look like they are doing the bundle this time, but they did for AGDQ 6 months ago.

Actually, to commemorate this run of a terribly buggy game, let's have a small GA for a terribly buggy game

Will they upload the broadcasts later? Already missed a lot due to my timezone and the need for sleep :D

They have a youtube account where they will upload everything individually in a few weeks after the end of the marathon. Here is an example of the playlist they made for the last AGDQ 6 months ago

I just went to spectate :) I would love to focus on a single game and register as a runner in the future. Maybe in a few years when my son's in high school and doesn't need as much supervision at an event like this.

I thought you were one of the runners since you used to stream. Hopefully I'm still around in a few years and we'll see how far you've gotten with mastering a single game. :D

No I was never a speedrunner, not even a member of speedrunslive. I just played games casually on stream, but I have a lot of fun watching this event.

Wouldn't hurt to try tho. I am kinda tempted to pick a game and try to speedrun it watching the event.

Speedrunning, at least if you do a popular game, can be very demanding, and it's almost a bit disheartening when your record gets beaten. I used to hold the Swedish record for Super Metroid (though there might have been people who were faster, who did not submit anything) back in the ~2003 (at under 48min), but keeping up with it was more exhausting than fun, as new tricks kept appearing. And if you don't go for a popular game, then chances are that no-one will even care. You might hold the world record in Spellcross, but seriously, who even knows about Spellcross?

I would only wanna do it for myself, because I play games for too long. I tend to check every single corner for things and look at textures and level design. I love the thought of just skipping enemies and just run for it for a change.
Is there any footage of your run? Would love to watch it and even when you're not holding the record anymore it is still a pretty nice thing to add to your achievements.

Sadly no. Even back then, it was just a photo uploaded to a webpage (so I could easily have cheated. Speedrunning was a smaller thing back then, so people did not care as much about checking the validity of the run). I could see if I would be able to do a decent run, but I doubt I would be able to pull off many of the tricks I used. Sub 1½h run would still most likely be doable, but not a sub 1h run.
Speedrunning back then was by the way a lot less about using glitches, and more about using things that the developers did not consider. You could skip a lot by just using the tools that the developers gave you in unintended ways in Super Metroid (singe wall wall-jumps and charge dash were two heavily abused things).

Bumping for some visibility! Personally, I know what I'll be doing during the week.. Even though the lack of sleep is probably going to be the end of me.

Nice :) I discovered it 6 months ago. Didn't know it goes every half a year. Good event, thanks for heads up.

A little bump to push it back up to the top. Just watched octodad be completed in about 18 minutes. That was pretty awesome!

Bump and I added a link for time-coded vods guide from reddit.

Just a reminder that Summer Games Done Quick starts tomorrow July 26 — August 1st at 1:00 EST in the U.S. If you've been living under a rock, it's the biggest speedrunner event on twitch that raises money for charity. I attended last year in person and I loved every single minute of it. It's 24/7 for a week here. The direct website for the event is here. Here is the calendar if you want to plan your schedule. It should account for your time zone.
Edit 7.29 - Adding a time-coded guide from reddit for various runs. It should make watching things you missed a bit easier instead of digging through the vods yourself. Here is the link
