Recently, I've been impersonated in steamtrades. Everyone was kind enough to hear what I had to say, but by the third or fourth time I was discussing it, I decided to make this informative picture that should help. I hope it helps you guys too. Feel free to repost it!

How about a few private giveaways to promote both this tutorial and my trade thread?

I only ask you share the topic instead.

Not really. It can be somewhat confusing when scammers offer clearly fair trades, but then offer gifts they refund later, using a name of a trusted trader on top of it.

People aren't born with common sense, they earn it. This tutorial is meant to help those who don't know this yet.

I am helping.

This topic isn't targeted at you specifially, nor does it cater to people who already have such knowledge.

Please stop being arrogant and putting down something that is meant to do good, will do good and has already done good, or at least (chuckle or whatever but) ignore it instead of criticizing it for literally no reason.

Reading through the negative reps and the answers given to them on SteamTrades, I have to come to the conclusion that apparently that particular virtue is pretty much non-existent when it comes to Steam game tradings.

It doesn't work in the Steam client which many people use instead of the browser. This picture is lack-of-knowledge proof.

I haven't traded much but I never had any issues while trading.
Common sense, doing a little check work and reading up on stories/threads concerning trading ( like this thread)
Informative threads and stories help to improve your common sense and makes you more efficient at checking your bases.

Have a bump!

If you have alt account, you can hit yourself with Negative rep on SteamTrades, put all information there, and hope people read them..
In case if your impersonator haven't tagged by SteamRep, send a report to them with necessary evidence

That's a good idea, I'll think about it.

The only problem I see is it's against the feedback rules.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

A lot people already do that in the past (including me), and you can remove it anytime since it's your alt.
Or you can ask trusted trader / Steam friends to do that if you don't have alt

That's the only way to give warning is something like that and put warning on your trades. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

It's been at the top of my thread thread since I first heard I was impersonated, that has been working out.
My issue with -repping myself is negative reviews get reviewed by other users and the instructions say -rep that are not about trades gone wrong involving you should get a remove vote.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Fyi: If you decided to reply that negative rep, it will begin voting and people can see it on voting (and got a chance to get removed)
If you didn't reply it (just leave it there), then it won't get voted or removed.

When you leave a reply to a negative review, you'll be automatically requesting a community vote. Both the review and your reply will be presented to users in our community, and they will be asked to decide whether the negative review is legitimate and in accordance with our guidelines, or whether it should be removed. You'll be able to see the results of the voting above. When the voting period ends, the review will be automatically removed from your profile if determined so by the community.

I didn't think of it like that, even though I had the information to do it. Well, it's at the top of my thread, it's going --- wait, as a negative, newbies have a higher chance to check it --- okay I getcha. Would you do it for me, please? Can you copy paste some text I give you as a -rep on my steamtrades profile?

Some people add warning to their profile picture ("I have impersonator, be careful" message or something similar).

I ended up including that at the top of my thread. Solved most of my issues.

Step 1 : Don't trade.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Sometimes I'd want to make a trade guide, but I doubt it'd ever really get traction. Plus I would include anyone with over 100 rep trying to screw you over in the deal more than 90% of the time. Some people just don't do the basic check of making sure they're dealing with the right person and that's what usually goes wrong.

too complicated. here's an easy one:

1) don't be greedy
2) don't be gullible

To elaborate, (1) if an offer is too good to be true, it probably is, and (2) don't trust that the other person is who s/he says s/he is, check it out yourself. And if the story doesn't seem quite right, it probably isn't.

Permalink

If the offer is completely fair and the story seems okay, it can still be a scam, so not being greedy and not being gullible isn't always enough.

Newbies and someone who didn't take scamming into considreation or doesn't know enough computer logic (basic or not) might still fall for it because they didn't do the check properly. Scammers give my steamtrades profile, enter my steam profile through the steamtrades link, and think it's me.

This happened to about 4 people in my thread, but it would have been avoided if they had seen my tutorial picture first.

Actually there's a more annoying problem happening recently on steamtrades : those fake profiles spamming -reps everywhere, action should be taken against those bots as soon as possible

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't think they're bots, but that does suck. At least noone is losing anything valuable though.

That entirely depends on what you place value on. Reputation of character is certainly of value, to some people.

I got scammed out of my very first trade. Wasn't too upset because I had two Dying Light keys so I kept one and wanted to trade one and all I wanted was Skyrim Legendary. Which for a new Dying Light was a damn good deal so I definitely wasn't being greedy. It was an imposter. Everything looked legit on their profile. Thankfully someone took pity on me and gifted me a very good game. But like it was stated sometimes its not as simple as not being greedy or gullible. Some people are just very good at what they do. I don't trade very often simply because I'd just rather wait for a sale now. I'd love to trade more but its just not worth it. But those that managed to build up a rep that's good. But I just came to late to the party I guess. Now that I'm almost 40 with a wife and kids I barely have time to check this site for giveaways to join.

Tutorial TL;DR:

  1. Have brains.
  2. ?????
  3. Profit
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

People aren't equally intelligent. They are also not equally taught. They can also work better being self sufficient, learning on their own, like they can be better working as a team, equally learning and teaching as a group.

But people don't get the perfect enviroment that nurtures their virtues. Everyone's a unique gem, but some are a lot more polished than others because of luck in life. Luckily you had good opportunities and ended up with enough confidence, but you seem to think it should be equally easy for everyone.

They might be lacking in trading instincts, you lack on empathy. Trading can be profitable, just like empathy. If someone who profits more from their empathy than you do from trading says you have no brains, would you agree with them?

I'm surprised that there's no mention of this at all:
In Steam's settings menu (vVew/settings, or Steam/settings) under the Interface listing there's a tick-box in the middle: Display Steam URL address bar when available, that way even in the client the user will have it's own URL displayed like one would check from a browser, and it can be easily checked if it's the same as they claim to be. Just check it if it's the same as the page you get redirected if you click on the Steam Profile button on the trader's Steamtrades profile.
Otherwise I'm fairly sure most of the worse scammers won't copy the history of the real trader's aliases. Not to mention that number of reviews, screenshots, badges, levels are such an easy way to check if it's the same person. I think the only reason people can still get scammed that they don't even know about how imporsonators work, there's just no way that someone can't pinpoint differences between the two profiles.
