Nice challenge... I'll give it a try... perhaps.

Hmm. I've already got a brute forcing program, now I just need to make something that will generate all the possible permutations given the clues. Be back in a bit.

Where did you get that? I've been looking for one and I couldn't find it.

I made it myself. Not too difficult. Just a simple Java program.

Hints 1 & 2

  • One of these things is not like the others. I've already spoken of it today.

You misunderstood the question BTW.
It's much easier than you think. But still way too hard for me though.

Bump for solved :)

Bump for successful brute force while ignoring the hints because I couldn't be bothered to figure them out.

Comment has been collapsed.

I think I may have made this one too hard for anyone without software tools.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Probably. It took over 20,000 checks (sorry cg) before I found anything (and that was out of about 250,000 possibilities that I had it narrowed down to).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

If you think it over, you'll narrow it down to ~15,000 checks to end up with all 5 codes.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Hint 1 should have cut that down dramaticly. Maybe it was too vague. What I meant was that I already posted the link to one of these five giveaways somewhere else in the forum on the same day I made this thread.

I think its spelled Hercules. And he can brute force anything, the dude is strong! Especially if he's paired with that Xena chic.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I think Heracles can spell his name however he wants to spell it. Are you going to argue with him about it?

Both are correct.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Actually, I think it is 2 different people, I was just having fun with it since i have no idea how to solve this cryptogram. :)
Heracles is some kind of being in the underworld if my vague recollection of the name is right.

Huh, interesting. Learned something new, thanks. Maybe I was thinking of Testiclēs? :D
Or maybe just Hera - looked up some Greek mythology stuff on wiki just now. I mean 90% of my Greek knowledge came from the Xena and Hercules tv shows so yah, I'm sure I got a lot of it wrong.

I thought he was joking because of the Xena comment, so I didn't say anything. :o

Hercules is the Roman name for the Greek divine hero Heracles
Hercules = Roman Mitology
Heracles = Greek Mitology

You're not the only one... I feel like it's one of those moments where everyone says something completely random and has nothing to do with each other's statements.

Yeah, understanding the hints is harder than the brute force itself.

Bump for solved.
Made a prog in java, c# and even a bash script. This was fun!

I solved it using a toaster and a 1840's sewing machine.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That could be entirely possible

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Congrats.
You mean you needed 3 languages working together for this?
Or the Java, C# failed and the bash script worked?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It was more like the first thing i wrote was the bash script because it was easier for me, wget link , grep "Invalid giveaway code"
the bruteforcing part was easy, the script accepted two paramteters, the pattern ( XyXXX) and the available charset.
I used an old bruteforce algorithm i had and only wrote a method that verified that the generated string abide to the pattern, otherwise it would generate the next one, without doing the http request.
Then i wrote the java because it was cleaner, the c# just because it was fun.
