Even though i've been on Steamgifts for a year; I still don't realize the logic behind it.

Probably because each person is only entering to win one copy of the game, not many.

Yes, but it doubles the chances of winning. Think of it as two giveaway's. One of them you have to pay points; but the other one you have to pay nothing. That doesn't make much sense does it>

actually it doesn't double the chance for winning.

For example your chance isn't 2/1000 on a giveaway with 1000 people and 2 copies. It's 1/1000 + 1/999 which is about the same as double but not exactly. And given the fact that more people usually go for the giveaways with multiple copies your chance of winning one is a lot lower than going for the giveaways with just one copy and fewer people.

Comment has been collapsed.

That's not right. Even if we view the two picks as sequential, we'd have a 1/1000 chance of winning the first one and then a 999/1000 * 1/999 (i.e. 1/1000) chance of winning the second one (you can't win both, so you'd only win the second if you failed to win the first). That comes out to a 2/1000 chance.

To see how flawed your math is, consider a giveaway with 2 copies and 2 entries. By your math, that would give a 1/2 + 1/1 = 150% chance of winning. It's actually 1/2 + 1/2 = 100% chance.

Shure i forgot the "you have to lose the first" part, but your math is flawed too. Because 999/1000 (which is a bit less than 1) * 1/999 is again a tiny bit less than just 1/999 and still wouldn't add up to 2/1000 if you combine it with the 1/1000.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No, it isn't. The 999 on top and the 999 on the bottom cancel out, leaving you with 1/1000.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

ok I see it now, but as you said, it probably doesn't happen sequentially but at the same time which yould mean twice 1/1000 chances + the probability that IF both are won by the same other guy that there will be a third roll with a 1/999? And the probabilty for that to happen would be 1/1000 + 1/1000 * 1/1000 if I'm not mistaken.

What would mean your chances are actually more than doubled? O_O

A player can't win more than one copy. If there are X copies and Y entries, you have exactly an X/Y chance of winning (unless there are more copies than entries, in which case your chance of winning is 100%).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Nobody said a player CAN win more than one copy.

Whats said was: IF all rolls happen at the same time and not sequentially then all of the rolls have the same possible winner pool because the one roll doesn't know in advance which winner the other roll gets. And if by any chance the same guy is rolled there will be an automatic re-roll which theoreticly raises the winning chance by a small amount.

A system where an invalid result is rerolled is equivalent to a system where the invalid result just can't happen. There's no increased winning chance.

Despite the doubles, it's still for the same game. You may have more chances, but you're still gonna win one copy. If it's did up the price, people couldn't giveaway a good number of games due to the 300 point limits.

Then why aren't the points based on the number of participants?
Don't, just don't, you failed.

Why don't you just press "Enter", and then, pray as hard as you can instead of wasting time calculating your chances of winning as if it's going to increase your stakes?

I am sure that will more than double your chances of winning.

Then the same would have to apply for 50 copy giveaways - 50x10 = 500 points to enter, so nono.

Because you can only win 1 copy, besides multiple copy giveaways usually get more entries so your chances will be barely improved.

Because you're still only winning one game. It's just that there will be two winners.

Your odds are increased if you participate in a private or group giveaway too, yet the entry still cost the same number of points. And going for 0.1% of winning something to 0.2% chance isn't much of an increase anyway. And that's just for 1000 entrants.

Look a t the current Be Mine X Giveaway, 50 copies but 17,659 entries at this moment. Do you really think that going from 0.005% chance of winning to 0.28% chance is worth spending 250 point for entry?

According to your logic entering a dev giveaway should cost 150 points, seems about right for a 5 $ bundle

Because points are based on the Steam store just like CV, they are not set manually by the admin.

You don't get to win 3 games even if you have 3 chances. You only get to win 1. So the logic would be AT MOST to introduce a chance of winning multiplier (which is really socialist as hell and goes against the very fair and simple system steamgifts already has). Because spending 60 points on a 20 point game giveaway just because there are 3 copies available makes no sense at all.

Have you ever seen Coca-Cola raising their prices just because they have more prizes to give? nope. Have you seen ANY SOLID COMPANY that doesn't want to rip off people raising their prices just because their customers have more chance of winning stuff? That's the most anti-consumerist and illogical thing ever. Only steamtrades and tf2outpost and galagiveaways selfish and greedy users can think of such policies because all they wanna do is rip people off all the time.

The free market is filled with much more greed. And this idea and the users roaming these sites are proof of that. THIS thread is a proof of how you can get away in today's world with being a complete greedy jackass.

Because you still only have a chance to win one game. Even though your chances are increased. Those who get super lucky and win two of the same games, have to give up their duplicate win anyway. So you enter for one game and have a chance to win one game.

As an interesting fact, I seem to have won double the number of giveaways which have multiple copies.

Because points don't really matter. With all the bundle giveaways running amok, you get over 300 points every day, so if you want you can easily enter all giveaways that interest you.
