Finally completed my latest bass guitar mod/restoration project!
I had been procrasting this for weeks because, well, it's a lot of work and a pain in the arse. Also, I am a chronic procrastinator, so this is a real achievement.

And the end result was totally worth it.
Not that it looks much different from before (except for a few more scratches), but it sounds just great!

Here is a little celebratory train as I share this joy with you children.

Now I know you don't care, but for the curious here's the story...

I had a new Warman pickup ready to be put in my Metalman V, but the socket was too small and I felt too lazy to mod it.
Then one day the earth wire to the bridge got disconnected on the bridge side, which meant I had to take it all apart anyway :(
So I figured that would have been a good occasion to also put the new pickup in.

First, I had to remove pretty much everything from the body. I also de-soldered the grounding wire that went to the bridge entirely.
Then I started the painful process of enlarging the pickup socket with a rotary tool and lots of patience.
I dug towards the bridge to achieve a slightly brighter / punchier tone. This alone took me two days.

After masking the surrounding area, I hand painted the cavity and then sprayed some highly volatile fluid in it - that would allow for spectacular pyrotechnics during live shows. If I did any.
Well, that's another 24 hours wait for it to hard dry.

Finally I could fit the new pickup and wire the bridge, solder a new earth wire to it, and secure it with some thin copper tape just in case.
Now, for those who have read all of this, your patience is being rewarded with a small jigsaw for The Witcher Adventure Game! ;)

Haha thanks!
Well, I was wearing a dust mask and goggles... but when I realised the whole room and all its contents including my clothes were covered in wood chips and dust, I looked like this:

I think you confused sgtool rules. I tnink you meant "minimum level 1" instead of maximum.

Congrats, it almost looks like a more rounded retro bass version of my guitar. Let's make a band!
What kind of music do you play with it?

Uhh that's a Jackson Sharkfin ♥ Randy Rhoads would approve. We should make a long distance SG band, I'm sure there's other musicians around here!

With this particular bass, I only play good music. That means metal. >:)

Well... there's lots of different kinds of metal, that's why I asked... unless you play all of them. :P

True. Mainly, I play heavy / thrash / speed / power and neoclassical.
I've also recently discovered stoner metal, and while I don't like ALL of it, some bands aren't bad at all.

I also play other genres which is why I have three different guitars, three different basses and use different drum kits and keyboards :D

But if I may, what do you play? Other than Megadeth of course.

I don't play anything. ;_; I have my 2 guitars since literally 10 years ago when I started and tried some stuff, but got a little bored.... been thinking about starting again, but didn't have the motivation.... and now I won Rocksmith 2014 here in SG and I was like "OMG YESYES" so I'm gonna start again as soon as the damn cable arrives that I ordered. The two first genres from your list will do, the last ones are too... I don't know what, for my taste.
Stoner is pretty cool, especially if it's kind of groovy, mixed with southern metal. Stuff like Down. But neither of my guitars have whammy so sadly I'm not going to play anything really groovy.

Awwww it'd be a shame not to put that beautiful Jackson to good use!
For about 10 years I've been playing pretty much just to myself, wearing headphones (hence why only electric instruments in my house) before I joined a band again, and even if nobody could listen to my music it was just gratifying enough to keep doing it.

When I was about 18, whenever I had an axiety/panic attack I would rush to my basement and play to myself. I would play anything, from Bach to Slayer, even unplugged (and you can't really hear an electric bass without an amp). It calmed me down a lot, it just worked.

P.S.: I hate whammy bars, I had a floating bridge in one of my guitars, and I modded it so it's now locked with no hole for the arm :P

Hm, I do have anxiety stuff going on sometimes, maybe I should try your kind of therapy. But I'd be afraid I will start associating my nice instrument with my anxiety shit, making me less motivated to play it when I'm not anxious and not wanting to be. ;_;

For me it was more of a link between music and feeling better when I was stressed.
In any case, there's only one way to find out.

PPS: Never played Rocksmith, but it must be cool if even Yngwie Malmsteen plays it.

Thanks! I am very satisfied with the sound of the new pickup.
Since I tune a minor third down I need the lower frequencies to still sound clear and punchy, while they used to be kind of muffled before. Now it's all crystal clear :D

I never modded my instruments but I was thinking about changing the color of my bass until I realized I'd need to take everything apart and me, without any knowledge about building it together or apart, just stopped before I messed up completely :D

Hah I know what you mean, mate :D You should use a very cheap instrument for your first mods, even if it's just changing the colour.
In fact, even recolouring has some risks (and the smell, oh the smell!).

The bass in these pictures costed me £50 pre-owned, and it was bloody knackered :D It had holes, chips, one of the "horns" was missing half of a corner, the frets needed some crowning and the action was extremely high.
It took me about a month of work, but it's good fun if you have the patience and you are not a procrastinator like me!

didn't understand most of it, I had enough trouble understanding the modifications I needed to my guitar (accoustic steelstring) to stop it from doing something weird with the strings occasionally, it was something about adjusting the frets to push the strings farther away from the guitar itself... fortunately my friend/instructor went with me to the music shop to explain the issue
but I did understand enough to know that it's a good thing, so nicely done! of course giveaways are also an appreciated addition too :P

Ahh, it was probably a truss rod adjustment. Something I may not trust doing myself on an acoustic :D

Cheers!

That's cool, I guess. All I ever had is a starter Gibson that I can't properly tune, so I can't relate and don't really understand what you're talking about, but it looks cool.

I've seen people who's got guitars hanged on their walls, actually even nailed to the wall.
They can't play, but heck them guitars look cool, so it's all good :D

Hah, Yamaha makes pretty decent instruments, I have an RBX260 bass (one of last ones before it went out of production) and it's great.
There's a Pacifica like the one in your picture (except grey) in the place where I practise with my band which we can borrow if needed, but I never even tried it because of my visceral hatred for floating bridges :D
