I'm okay with it. I only need 9 XP more to be 10 and start collecting foils.

Right, right, my bad, forgot that. I still haven't started collecting anything yet, so I'm a little out of the loop.

Level 10 gets you your first showcase though, that's something to look forward to :3

Not necessary rich... I can't say I'm rich I'm from Poland where salaries are not that big, but you know that there are steam sales everyday and some times a year you have that sales booms when you can get tons of games for like 1$/1€... I don't have many AAA games but hey, if I can't afford them that's no big deal... I can't afford neither porsche nor mclaren and I'm not complaining nor being jealous... If someone can have them that's super - both for creators and that lucky guy/gal.

Let's conveniently forget about bundles and sales and gifts.

I mean yeah, if someone is rich, it's true, just pointing out that having a shitload of games doesn't necessarily mean that person is rich.

What he said ^
^^;
I don't like when people assume I'm rich based on amount of my games, I just 'invest' money in other things.

previously rich users* Now I have no cash, but I managed to stockpile games from when I once did!

So booster packs will drop for a random game that you own, while you're playing, or only for the game that you're currently playing and have reached the card drop limit in? The quote "continuing to participate in the community" isn't very informative. Still, good news that it will be possible to receive cards after the drop cap has been reached.

"For all the "participate in the community" questions: we're still working on what the exact rules are. We are thinking that it be something as simple as all users are eligible for drops during a given week, if they've already found all the drops they can in-game, and they've done at least one thing on the community (play a game, post a comment, etc). We don't want a thing where users can 'grind' doing posts or having a game sit idle to try and increase their chances of getting cards over others. More thoughts welcome."

The idle thingy already went down the gutter, when you could open multiple games and just idle in the main menu for card drops to occur.
If they want to prevent something like this, they should link them to achievements. Since as of now most achievements are got through advancing through the game in a 'normal' manner. Or at least the 'story achievements' work that way.

Steam Achievement Manager. Achievement criteria is way too easy to bypass.

Linking them to achievements was just the first thing that came to mind. I wanted to point out, that first they wanted to prevent grinding and people actually playing the game, when it is equally easy to bypass if you just let the game sit on idle until all cards are dropped or it appears in the "Played in the last 2 weeks"-list.
What would you suggest to prevent idling for getting cards?

"What would you suggest to prevent idling for getting cards?"
Taking the cards out. There's always going to be people idling.

SAM. That is all. Besides, achievements take more to implement into a game for a dev than making cards. Valve also wanted something different to achievements, to prevent grinding for them or SAMing them.

Point taken. But I was looking for a method to prevent idling to get cards, which isn't that far from grinding for cards imho. At least the game should be played and not just left idling, while someone does ones laundry or making dinner.
Any ideas?

I think the idea that "Valve also wanted something different [than] achievements" is oft overlooked. They are trying to promote playing the games, yes, but also taking part in the game's community (discussions, recommendations, screenshots, video, guides, etc) and the larger Steam Community. They're trying to recognize those people that have done those things, or will do those things in the future.

That'll make me lvl 20. Probably one badge per 100/250/500 games.

maybe they could take into account in the formula the equivalent value of the games attached to the account, thus including the dlc...

Yeah they announced that they're doing Tuesday/Thursday updates, but that's only with the new games, I think the stuff in this post is just when they leave Beta.

I still want to see something linking achievements.
But specifically difficult ones to get - I know a lot of people find ways to cheat and achievement hack so I guess I'm really just saying that something that rewards genuine players who are genuinely playing the game.
It just feels like too many people are buying the participating games and idling for a while to get cards, then buying the rest.
Maybe I'm missing the point, but I feel like cards, showcases and backgrounds should be fun things to show how much you've played and enjoyed a game.
I guess I think it should be kinda just a visual version of achievements

Well, I need more details on booster packs but that changes looks awesome.

I want them to drop ingame while playing and you have to pick them up to prevent idling ;)
Also linking with achievements like this, so you have to accept it ingame while getting the achievement to prevent the abuse with SAM, that would be much better than idling :)
And yeah to the games collector badge, this will most likely finally make me at least level 10 :D
Comment has been collapsed.
What about people who already complete an achievement? That's the problem, Steam have to check every single game that's participating in beta, check user profile and generate a card drop for this particular achievement. That's a lot of work for our fellas at Valve :D

THinking about the selling market.. If theres booster cards then rareity of cards go down ...
On the other hand .. if theres Binders to display your cards.. then more ppl will be collecting, thus making a greater demand .. so it may even out .. hmmm
Comment has been collapsed.
You can turn a set of cards into a badge that gives you XP, which increases your Steam level. Leveling up to a certain level enables some new features on your Steam profile.
Or you can sell them on the Steam market and get yourself some free games eventually.

what exactly is 'participate in the community'?
as in how many cards we sell, or (knowing valve) rather is it how many cards we buy?
is it how often we trade cards, or how often we post in the steam forums, or in the trading card chat. or is it how many cards we have, or how many sets...

Reading the source thread, it means exactly what it says. They want some minimum activity, such as playing the game or posting a comment in the community discussions.

"Thank you for all the feedback during this beta. We've been spending a lot of time helping game developers get their Trading Cards built and released, and will continue
to release new sets of cards twice a week for the foreseeable future. Participating is up to the developers, so if there’s a game you’d like to see trading cards for, you
should let them know.
We've also had time to work on some new features for the beta that we hope to release in the next week or so, based on feedback we've received:
Trade Offers: send an offer to another user of items to trade, even if they're offline, that will let them accept, decline, or make a counter-offer. You'll only be able to send trade offers to friends to start with, but if people like it we'll look into expanding it. This will also let you send an item as a gift to a friend.
Booster Packs: these will drop randomly for users who have received all their card drops from playing any given game, and who are continuing to participate in the community. Each booster pack will contain three cards for that game, and may potentially contain foils. The rate of drops will be based on how often cards are being used, to prevent too many flooding into the economy.
Game Collector Badge: A badge that grants XP based on how many games you own on Steam, to ensure that long-time users are rewarded.
Trading Card Binder: A way of showing off all the cards you've collected, including those you've crafted into a badge."

Great updates. What do you think? I like that we will be able to get more cards.
