I know its a game forum, but the golf forum I wanted to ask is "Waiting for registration approval", so I cant ask there yet.

Anyway, I'm looking to buy a set as a new golfer.
Someone offered the following for around $300.
But I'm new and heard there are fakes too.

Are these a good deal for that price?

  • 8x Maruman Iron set GN-III SPSS
  • 1x Maruman Putter "Tap 18"
  • 1x Big Bomber 1 " DT250XL Tour Series"
  • 1x Callaway 3 "Big Bertha War Bird"
  • 1x Callaway 5 "Great Big Bertha"

Some of those clubs especially the callaway and big bomber were great when i started playing golf about 20-30 years ago. I personally wouldn't play with this set as a beginner. The grips on the irons look old so may need replacing. They clubs do NOT look fake to me but you can pick up newer starter golf sets/clubs which will be more forgiving and easier to hit. You could probably pick up a brand new Wilson/Slazenger starter set with a bag for about £250-300 if you can stretch to that.

If you want a quality branded second hand set, something like this (see below) at your price point would be much better in my opinion.

It is e-bay so you buy at your peril.

I see. I would love to find sets that are forgiving, but not sure what to look for since people suggest different things.

At the end of the day, its what suits us best, so down to personal preference.

It is down to personal preference but at the start, the most important thing is something that is easy to hit and to launch the golf ball even if the strike is not very accurate. You may also get good advice if you are planning to have golf lessons and your instructor can advise you on a golf set to begin with. Golf is quite easy to pick up but very hard to master. I hope you will have fun and enjoy it. I still do :)
