I stopped watching during season 1 and now feel like I should give it another chance

I watched like 2 or 3 episodes of the first season and it felt like the showrunners were really confused on what they wanted it to be. Is it comedy? Is it a serious show? I didn't really care for the comedy which made it worse.

I agree, the initial few episodes were kind of "lost" in what they are exactly, but later in the first season it gets much better, and the 2nd season is fully fledged sf show that completely found itself.

That said, initial few episodes of the first season of TNG are ridiculous to watch today compared to the rest of TNG and later ST shows (ending with DS9/Voyager)

I have a lot of shows I'm watching currently but I may give it another chance. And yes I do know what you mean about TNG :) I'm not a hard core Star Trek person but I did enjoy TNG and the original Star Trek. I'd watch the new Star Trek series and also the upcoming one with the return of Picard but it's on all access.

Me as a hard core Trekkie i am still mixed about Discovery, as it's totally different from what Star Trek ever was (it was more about interactions, characters, short to say somewhat of a soap, while now it really focus on the action as with the movies to make it appealing to youngsters), it does get better in the second season though,

But as with both Orville and Discovery and both seasons they got episodes that are sometimes likeable and sometimes just mweh.

The one with Picard (who is too old to still be a captain) might get so overhyped and when it's gonna be like Discovery provide a disappointment.

I started watching the first season expecting to be an comedy (a mock up of Star Trek) but definitely continued watching because of the sf and how it aboards some controversial teams, while still keeping a little of the comedy side

I didn't expect to like it actually.
It touches though very nice issues, it raises very good points and keep a bit of subtle comedy to the mix to avoid it being too serious and "heavy".
For some reason, I enjoyed the first season more, but can't pinpoint exactly why because the second one is also pretty stellar.

I enjoyed the first season for both SF and comedy aspects. Looking forward to the second season, but it probably takes around a year until it's getting aired here.

Just started ep 6 but I heard good things about "those two episodes"
Finally, some good TV after that disappointment called ST:D

Discovery has really grown on me. The first few episodes were a disappointment. Bombastic action, but none of the thoughtfulness that made Star Trek what it was. I feel like they've brought a LOT of that back into the show. You might consider giving it another chance.

I'm still not sure it really feels like Star Trek, but I quite like it now.

However, I also want to echo the OP's sentiments about The Orville. I wasn't sure what to expect, and the first few episodes didn't sell me on the show, but by the half-way point in the first season, I was sold. This is a worthy successor to STTNG, and it feels more like Star Trek than Discovery does.

I dunno, I just meant the identity 1 and identity 2 episodes that form a whole story arch together. Maybe there's more left, we'll see.

oh good, there's one on tonight. while i liked identity and i'm curious how that will change that character's motivations going forward, my favorites so far were the one with the planet being pulled into its star and the one where they went to xelaya.

Its good, but they use a lot of social issues and not enough science issues. It feels a lot like a soap series for the most part.
Looking forward to the rest of season 2 then.

Strangely enough, I've often felt that about some of the star trek seasons. I remember watching back to back episodes of Star Trek: Enterprise before it dawned on me that it could easily have been played out on modern day earth - was just pure soap about relationships etc, just with a SF backdrop, make-up and costumes.

Isn't that all of the best sf? What else is blade runner for example? Star wars? Equilibrium? Matrix? Any of those is just a story of human nature and overcoming your own fears/feelings or reaching personal freedom against society and so on.

True enough. I remember though, as a kid being riveted when the crew would beam down a to new, unexplored planet in Star Trek - It was that that I realised I was missing years later after 2 or 3 episodes where the exploration had been replaced more by social issues and relationships. Didn't hate it - just wanted to see more unknowns from the final frontier :)

Read the books. Seen a few episodes of the show. While it looks great, it's kind of hard to watch when it's 1:1 representation.

No, I choose option 6. As m3rc said, it has a lot of social issues, much like some of TNG or Voyager (especially with Janeway), but instead of being handled in an "alien" way they were often quite ham-fisted, and something you might see more on shows like SVU or even worse crime dramas, where you kinda expect it. Due to this I stopped watching religiously. Still better than all the reality shows on free-to-air tv I guess.

The Orville is the Star Trek show that Star Trek fans wanted. Discovery is the Star Trek show that CBS thought Star Trek fans would support even though it wasn't really for them.

Now, that being said, season two of Discovery is doing a lot to backpedal on some of the bigger mistakes made in season one so there is still hope.

I like the show even though MacFarlane has always rubbed me the wrong way and this is no exception. Still, I keep watching so it's saying something about the show.

I don't know, I think season 2 is significantly worse than season 1 considering the majority of the episodes are relationship drama and not exploration. I enjoyed the first season, it was serious and it had some humor in it and the episodes were good to think about. Now, there are almost no jokes and more plot holes than ever and some of the conflicts are not well thought out (like the astrology planet or the human-AI romantic relationship). I wish the show would develop the characters a little more.

They are exploring the crew members ;) Also there's a lot of action too, and star trek cameos. I think Braga is doing an amazing job.

Can I just say how Orville grew from a hard to place comedy into a really amazing sf show in its own?

You can but I would have to strongly disagree. Here are a few of my main gripes with Orville:

  • Orville tries to apply 21th century morals to 25th century moral dilemmas. Also a surprising number of those moral dilemmas are constructed to cater to 21th century viewers.
  • People in the future are obsessed with 20th century entertainment (Kermit the Frog, Barry Manilow, old musicals...) Did nothing interesting or entertaining happen neither in Earth nor alien culture between 21th and 25th century? (The Beasty Boy - Sabotage joke in the latest Star Trek worked better for me because she's not listening to it voluntarily)
  • There is no Captain Ed Mercer as a role or a character. There is just Captain Seth MacFarlane and in my opinion he takes playing himself two steps too far here. It does not make for a compelling character.

I have not seen the latest episode yet but so far I can't see any significant improvements in Season 2. The episode with the "Klingon gay holodeck dungeon sex" even made me wonder what kind of mushrooms Seth McFarlane is taking :D I know it's not technically gay for an all male or rather almost exclusively male species.

cater to 21th century viewers

But... who else should they cater too? Those are the only viewers they have.

People in the future are obsessed with 20th century entertainment

Yes, seeing Kermit on the desk breaks the immersion for me too... but... even today there's a lot of people who "worship" 60's or 50's cars, or devices, clothes... We have people living in 19th or 18th century houses... Hipsters always try to bring the hats back... Imagine living on a spaceship so far away from the planet itself, that nostalgia for "simpler times" would be more expressed.

I would have probably preferred had they tried to present us with new thought-provoking moral dilemmas instead of shoehorning in current topics while at the same time barely making any statement about them beyond This thing exists.

We have people living in 19th or 18th century houses... Hipsters always try to bring the hats back... Imagine living on a spaceship so far away from the planet itself, that nostalgia for "simpler times" would be more expressed.

Fair enough but why just the 20th century? Why is nobody obsessing about the 2nd rise of the Roman Empire in 2207? Those space romans sure had style, I'll tell ya that :D

Another aspect I forgot in my earlier post that could use improvement is alien and set design. While some of the alien facial prostastics look ok others like the Krill or Moclan look either highly derivative or outright cringeworthy. And when it come to the sets there's just too many small mistakes like the watchtower in the giliac prison camp, which is made from brandnew plywood which hasn't even turned colour from the rain yet while the episode claims giliacs have been outcasts from society and imprisoned for hundreds of years.

I kinda agree with this, it's really strange that thecrew was applying contemporary social norms to a 25th century world. The more I thought about the moclan sex change episode the less sense it made. Same with the astrology planet and dr Finn's relationship.

I'm not really satisfied with Star Trek Discovery, which after a lackluster first Season, has bounced back a bit in Season 2. but is still rife with more problems than I would like. I guess I'll see if I can power through the first episodes of the Orville and see if it is for me.

Should at least tide me over during the wait for Season 4 of The Expanse, which for my money is the best Sci-Fi TV has to offer right now - and I say that as a ultra hardcore (ex-)Trekkie.

There have been a few decent episodes in both seasons (yeah the last two episodes definitely were among those), so I kept watching, but all in all that show is still lacking direction. It's too poorly done to count as a serious sci-fi show but it's not funny enough to be comedy either. It's pretty much all centered around Seth MacFarlane, who obviously has some strange sense of humor, which I don't really think funny at all most of the time (in fact it's often so crude it makes me cringe -" Ja'loja", "the great relief", seriously? Common', that's just sick..)
Then again, it's hard to find a decent sci-fi show at all these days. Discovery has great visuals, but the story wasn't too great to begin with and now it's gone for the worse. I'm not a Star Trek fan, so I don't even care what Star trek fans think of it, but the current story line with time anomalies and whatnot is just a boring mess.

I can't comment on the show as I have not seen it; but I probably will, you know, eventually... But ugh, this also reminds me I still need to finish a lot of great old sci-fi shows like SG1, Atlantis, SGU, Farscape, last season of BSG, Babylon 5, Deep Space 9, et al.

Frankly I am amazed how good The Orville is, considering who is behind it. I intended to only watch an episode or two to see how terrible it was, but instead got knocked over the head how decent it was. Kept watching and while there were bad moments, they have (so far) not been as disastrous as I had expected from MacFarlane. The comedic bits are a hit or a miss, but (so far) haven't gotten to the low end. The first season had couple fantastic episodes and some lower ones, so the balance was okay, I don't expect to love every single ep. I'm not that far into the second season yet but looking forward to it when opportunity arrives.

What really made the show was that the dramatic moments work nicely even if the plots are predictable. And I enjoy that the relationships (professional, friendships) are in central focus as well, it gets tiring if shows are all about the action and don't bother showing that the characters have connections with each other. Not happy about Alara being replaced though. I understand it was the actress' choice to leave the series, but it is little too weird that they chose to replace her with another Xelayan instead of using the opportunity to bring a brand new species to the table.
