Kickstarter: Never, I made that mistake once.
Pre-order: Never, I never did, I never will.

I will see once the game and the reviews are out.

As much as I love Giger and his works, I have similar doubts about this. Especially the part 1 aspect of it. If it turns out to be a 2 hours long walking simulator, I won't be very happy.
Even Bosch and his interesting world got two decent games so far, so there is still hope.

I think a big part of the doubt here is that the game has been teased early, so a lot of people had it on their radars. Now with the demo, people are setting their expectations to the level of "actual demo of a retail-ready game" whereas what we have right now is a weird kind of late-alpha thing built seemingly for the specific purpose of showcasing the setting to potential backers. If I'm right about the state of the game, it's only natural for some threadbare parts, lacking polish and lacking content. Visually the demo is impressive, so it gives the impression of being close to release, but that might not be the case.

I think that the demo is causing a lot of doubts as a result, but the sad reality is that the game could in fact be close to release and the experience will be a bumpy (if fittingly surreal and disturbing) one. Given the stretch goals on the kickstarter include expanded content, they might just be trying to get extra funding so they can postpone the release in favor of adding more stuff. A lot of crowdfunding stretch goals (at least in videogames) can be just transparent bait where the amount and the reward don't sync up, or have really weird prioritisation. When a game lets you know ahead of time that it's "part 1" of a multiple part game, that usually leaves a sour taste in my mouth too. Not just because I prefer completing whole stories before moving on to new ones (because returning to old settings usually means I forgot half of the important stuff), but because you never know exactly how big each part is. Some big-budget games just don't tell you, and randomly slap a TO BE CONTINUED ending in what feels like the middle of the game, and then release 'Game 2' later and frame it as a sequel.

I just hope that they prove our doubts wrong and really nail the execution on the game, but as always, crowdfunding is a risk. They met their target, so patience is always an easy option. We can always support them later, or risk some cash on an effective pre-order discount.

I am not entirely sure. The first teaser that really grabbed the attention of everyone had no gameplay and just showcased the power of the Unreal Engine textures and a few animations. That thing could have been put together in a few weeks, since it was just a series of models with great lighting.
Perhaps gameplay came much later in the mix as they realised people would actually really like to play this

Kickstarter strech goals don't exactly mean anything, that's indeed accurate, but I have doubts the game is even close to being finished seeing the amount of content they have released so far. I don't know how éong this demo is, but I don't think they worked on it longer than a year. This is a mainly visual game, so if there were more assets by the time the teaser was finished, the game might be bigger than what I expect.

In any case, I hope they stay true to Giger's vision and don't stray away from it. The shooting aspect was a bit odd, but I for one really liked the unique reload animation. I am interested in what kind of puzzles and story they are going to come up with, so I'll probably give it a try after both planned parts are released. I really don't want to leave the game with a sore Deus Ex Mankind Divided type of feeling, where the story has barely started but the credits are already rolling.

Ah, an atmospheric horror adventure developed by Ebb Software set in a nightmarish universe of odd forms and somber tapestry.

Yes, I love the Easy Allies Podcast. :D

Ah, that thing, I came across a trailer the other on day while watching stuff on youtube and it honestly looks like a nightmare on steroids.
I must admit that it's oddly fascinating but I'll probably never play it, a tad too creepy for me.

Why do they even call it "adventure game" when you clearly have to shoot things with that (awesomely looking) gun?

Because the combat isn't the main focus. The player is told nothing about the world, and you have to do the whole non-linear roaming stuff to learn about any underlying stuff by experiencing it directly. Action-adventure maybe, but we'll see how it pans out.

Here's hoping that the gun doesn't become too central to everything, the setting is unique enough that it deserves other kinds of actions or at the very least weird tools or melee weapons that don't seem to make any immediate sense.
