i didn't see that before i posted and to be honest i am not the least bit interested in some half baked mobile games on PC - as Mitsukuni said most of the popular/decent ones make it to PC anyway

So Google wants to spread the plague to PC district. What Google does not see here, we already have those type of games and most importantly PC gamers and mobile gamers are two different demography, almost entirely. If a game is good enough there is most likely a PC version of it because it was a port on Android to begin with, of course there are games other way around too.

It is destined to fail miserably on its own but I suspect that Google has a cooperation with Microsoft here so they will plague Windows instead.

PC gamers don't like half games (insert irony here) and they tend to buy their games as full content. They like to play whenever they want and they don't like forced daily rewards and if they want to play more than the game indicates, they don't like to buy credits to continue as well.

Of course there are exceptions but they are not enough to make this worthy.

I tell you what's going to happen here. Some of us will completely ignore its existence while some of us will try it, play a little and will get bored quickly. Maybe a very tiny percentage of us will play with it longer.

It would be a good thing if the games are actual games instead of addiction pillars with game code attached but nay.

Well, at least these are my few cents on the topic.

i would agree but i play and have played some legit Steam games such as Crush Crush and Governor of poker 3 which give you daily login rewards - so that part isn't really a problem for some PC users

I guess not every game is like that but what I meant is the games that indirectly force you to login everyday (or even watch ads for that) by making some rewards unreachable unless you login consecutively.

I've played some games on Steam that happen to be ports from mobile and while on PC they're perfectly normal games on their Play Store version they're little more than a skinner box riddled with ads, it's incredible how having a ready to go ad platform provided by the store motivates devs to indulge in practices that pretty much ruin their games' gameplay experience.

Aside from the decent games, ad revenue is their business model and making addictive games is their main goal. Thus this way they have a sustainable income. This whole model is against playing games and having fun, instead it drains your joy and life-force. There are even scientific articles about this and whole point revolves around addiction. Like other addictions, this should also be illegal and should be prevented if possible. This may sounds harsh and debatable but it's not so different from social media addiction.

Yeah, it really ruins the fun and goes against common design practices. The worst part is that some games actually manage to find a pretty decent balance between being ad supported and being playable, thus proving that it should be possible, at least to some extent... still, I continue to prefer playing games that are ads-free on my phone.
I'd love it if some day Steam offers a native ARM-based client for Android, and with the recent rapid advancement of translation layers like Box86/Box64 and Proton/Wine it looks like it will be possible to run PC games on Android phones within a few years.

x86 architecture is still the more powerful one and ARM is mostly Apple and Google's workspace nowadays and there is already a rival to that and possibly has a better future, so not sure Valve would want to expand to ARM. Though both are similar. What I am trying tell is I don't think Valve is even considering ARM because it still is too weak comparing to x86. Will it ever come to that in few years? Perhaps. But some other big companies already investing in RISC-V and seeing Valve is more open-source friendly in the last decade, I don't see them making Steam for ARM. It would be nice to play at least some of the games on mobile devices though.

Translation layers are powerful but I don't think ARM is ready for that, and few years could be too optimistic for that to happen.

Is not so much about power but rather how energy efficient ARM can be when compared to x86, which is a big advantage when talking about small devices. So it's not like I pretend to play big demanding games on an ARM chip but rather all of those smaller indie games, and older stuff, those that could absolutely run on something like a decent phone.
There's a few small pi-like boards where they managed to get Steam running along with quite a few games, but so far it only works on Linux distros and every time Valve pushes some update the compatibility can break, that's why it would be nice if there was a native port of Steam for ARM and Box64 only had to deal with the games themselves (although that would require official support and that does indeed make it a lot less likely). Last time I read about it nobody had managed to get Steam running on Android tho, but it's only a matter of time I guess.

I hope RISC-V takes off, I've been hearing about it for years and the idea of an open architecture is so cool, but it's gonna take quite some time before it has the level of adoption of either x86 or ARM, those two have been around for decades.

Well, power efficiency of ARM what makes the modern mobile devices today even though it's a 30+ years old architecture. Though I agree that it definitely could play many indie games. I remember someone playing Doom on ARM of course it's Doom :) but writing drivers for every device is a nightmare for ARM for years so RISC-V devices would be so much better in that regard. There is still time but it's getting there hopefully.

With no official support from Valve, it tends to break with every update but community finds a way so it's not so bad, could be kinda slow though. I find Waydroid and Box64 projects very cool but they're not flawless yet. Someone will probably manage to run Steam on ARM but I remember an interview about this topic and they said there are so many x86 libraries that Steam uses are almost impossible to rewrite for ARM or not worth it, something like that. They probably haven't changed their minds so I don't think even an official support doesn't seem so possible. If someone manages Valve will probably financially support them though, so that might change things.

For a moment I thought this was a good thing, then I remembered that the only reason why I put up with the Play Store and its BS on mobile is that it is THE dominant storefront on Android so I have to use it but it actually leaves a lot to be desired in both features and business practices, the damned thing doesn't even have a functioning way to get notified when a game one wants goes on sale.

They totally failed Stadia and they're trying again under a different name with a less attractive offer?

It's not Stadia. It's just to play mobile games on PC.

That's why I said it was an even less attractive offer.
There's a reason mobile games are not PC games. They operate in a target rich environment with zero competition and they all follow the same model... oh yeah and they're on the go.
If you have to sit in front of a PC to play them, why would anyone play those games instead of the thousands of PC games which are better and not P2W micro-transactions messes?

No. I was correcting your assumption that it was another version Stadia. It isn't a remote PC service. It's a mobile device emulator for the PC platform, and it is by far not the only one on the market. So there's an obvious reason why that's an option.

FWIW, some of the games on it are also on PC, so you're being really weird and facetious with your assertions.

No what? And I know what you were doing so I was correcting your assumption that I didn't know what it was.
Just like Stadia, it's Google's attempt to barge into PC gaming with no real expertise, no plan and no advantage to make it in an already massively competitive market with better players just cause... We are the Mighty Google and We Will Rule This Kingdom.

it is by far not the only one on the market. So there's an obvious reason why that's an option.

That's a contradiction if you know anything about business. If you come up second on any market, you better have a much better product than the first guy. If you come in after already a dozen other businesses have made their nest, you better have a massively more attractive offer or a very good business reason to even go in. They really have neither. Just like Stadia.

some of the games on it are also on PC, so you're being really weird and facetious with your assertions.

They're not assertions, they're arguments supported by facts. Also why do you care so hard? You have an opinion, I have an opinion. You're not holding Google stock or anything, I hope.

Based on this comment:

They totally failed Stadia and they're trying again under a different name with a less attractive offer?

This is factually incorrect. It is NOT Stadia. Not even close. It's strictly an app. A mobile emulator. It doesn't stream like Stadia. There's no remote service. It's for playing mobile games through the PC without having to get a port for the games. It was pretty clear from your comment you have no idea what you were talking about, and I'm telling you that you're completely wrong.

That's a contradiction if you know anything about business

Buddy, I've used Nox for years. Some people swear by Bluestacks. That's what Google is offering here. It's not another Stadia and it's not something they slapped a new name. It's a different product, specifically like Nox and Bluestacks. It's like you plug in your phone to use Dex, but it's a standalone emulator without needing another device.

They're not assertions, they're arguments supported by facts.

Fact is, you were wrong and you are making assertions without any facts since you don't have a clue what you're talking about. Stadia is a remote PC service you stream on. What Google is piloting here is strictly a standalone emulator to play mobile games. They are NOT the same thing by a mile.

Speaking of sorting, may I suggest to put the numbers before the stars, so that the table can be sorted properly?
If you want to save time, maybe removing the stars is an option. This can be done with the "replace all" option of any text editor.
The table being sortable is due to a browser add-on, e.g. ESGST has a table sorter.
