Fraudulent Steam Keys
We are aware of a lot of fake/fraudulent Steam keys going around at the moment.

Be careful of taking/trading steam keys rather than gifts.

Just a heads up!

Click me
There is far more to it than Rebellion is admitting. They sold retails copies cheaply to key sites but expected to make more profit of it. When they didn't, they decided to blacklist those keys. I'm one of those victims, and the reseller I used is legit and around for many years. This is really a shame.

"To clarify, one of our PC retail distributors informed us that some of their allotted Steam keys were stolen. We believe these keys were then resold to multiple companies, with no payments going to either Valve or the retail distributor."

Yeah, the sites where you've bought your keys are pretty legit of course... They bought stolen keys, but it's Rebellion's fault.
Buy your games on LEGIT AND AUTHORIZED sellers website the next time, you will avoid to lost your money, instead of just paying $5 less.

Maybe the distributor couldn't tell exactly which ones were stolen, so Rebellion invalidated the entire set of keys given to that distributor.

Bullshit.

Don't ever buy from unauthorized key resellers, or be prepared for this to happen to you.

Every legit retail copy that was not bought from Steam got removed. Even people who bought from GamersGate have this issue.

Hi.
I would like to know only 1 thing.
What was the name of the site you (or your trader) bought the keys? g2a? kingpin(or whatever is it called)? or something like this?

No, those are publicly known scam sites. I used a local reseller. But as I said, this even affects GamersGate. Basically everyone who is not Steam.

The retailer I see getting mentioned a lot is SimplyCDKeys, I didn't know this was happening to GMG buyers as well. If so then this is really fucked up.

Bought there once, no issues. Ofc it's pure coincidence all of these sites get "shady" once the dev of a shitty game tries to cut a deal.

Ohh right, you are one of those people: "I bought there once" - so it has to be legit, right? RIGHT GUYS?!!
When will people finally learn not to buy from unauthorized key resellers ... sigh ...

from Rebellion forum :
"Rebellion, the developer of Sniper Elite 3 appear to have pulled one of the largest scams that the game industry has ever seen! We have conclusive evidence and proof. More information coming soon!

The sniper elite 3 standard edition keys we are selling are not affected by any problems, but we do have full proof to show that certain pre-order editions bought directly from the publisher have been illegitimately revoked by Rebellion in an effort to force users to buy directly on Steam. Over 60 retailers have been affected. We will have a blog post published shortly with all of the information as it develops. "

will more as soon as info come out!!!
no PhD was needed to figure this one...

and now a word from our sponsors at Unlimitedgamestore.com to enlight you further
Sniper Elite 3 update: We are receiving communication from several other retailers and suppliers regarding the issue with Rebellion's Sniper Elite 3 codes being revoked from Steam.
Official Rebellion's stand is indirectly suggesting that we digital retailers are illegaly buying games to then resell them to you, which only feeds the legend that all digital resellers are illegal because our prices are cheap.
Our prices are cheap because we don't add +30 EUR / USD to prices and that seems to be bothering someone. That's our stand. We will keep you updated guys, thanks for your trusting and support.

Where are you getting that info that they're not unlimited? Cause i remember a Valve employee in one group chat claiming completely the opposite.
I think i'm going to take his word over yours anytime

Source for that?

"Once your game is accepted for distribution on Steam, we will give you as many keys for your game as you want at no cost." from GL FAQ.

50k keys wouldn't be enough for any game that is sold in multiple countries.
Also where would devs get keys for all the bundles? (Most GL games are on bundles before release on Steam)

GMG is a very reputable company, you shouldn't have to worry at all about them. This most likely only has to do with the random unknown companies that sell keys and you shouldn't have to worry about ones like GMG or GOG for example.

have they revoked AMD keys as well?

I dont think it has anything to do with AMD keys. It sounds like the keys that were revoked were from one key resller called SimplyCDKeys

Needless to say, this is causing a fair bit of drama.

Interestingly enough, Rebellion keeps editing their post in the new SteamCommunity thread. Hopefully someone screencapped some of the things they said.

Yeah, I was on the threads before they edited one - not "some" - post. They did so in order to improve the wording of the post. But, you know, you can try and find this suspicious or "interesting enough".

They did offer to grant a free pre-order DLC to people that have bought stolen keys. They didn't have to. They changed the wording of the post to stress on the fact that, in order to get the free DLC, you have to buy from Steam directly in order for them to be able to see where the order originates from, as they cannot check other sellers - even legit ones.

This is why you don't buy from unauthorized resellers.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

There is no such thing as an 'unauthorised reseller'.
Under the first-sale doctrine, the copyright ownership of a software license ends after the first sale (from the official publisher to CJS), allowing the free re-sale of the game.
Steam throw this 'unauthorised reseller' term around in order to enoucourage users to pay the full retail price directly on Steam.

Reselling is legal.

Still there's autohrized sellers (sells at prices set by publisher)
and unauthorized (usually grey-imports, sold at asia @ cheaper prices).

Not just steam games, but can affect physical products too. Usually combated by no-warranty policy there.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't think so, there are a number of authorized sellers out there, such as GMG, Get Loaded Go, etc...

And I've never heard of Steam discouraging anyone from buying from them. They are safe, get their keys directly from publishers. Where do you get this "Steam dicouraging people" thing from ?

How about "official" and "unofficial" sellers then you pedantic bastard?

Finally some unbiased approach.

/sarcasm

edit : I read it entirely, that's awesome, I love the way they put it, thanks for posting. They do post on Steam forums too, you should have a look at it. Some guy with VAC bans, supposedly "CEO" of one of these companies is copy-pasting a rebellious statement all over the place. Hopefully this all wakes people up and they learn not to buy from these sites.

Yea I just saw this. The amount of drama that is building is ridiculous.

I do feel for the people who were trying to save a buck by buying from a key reseller, but this blame game is all hearsay at the moment.

Its doubly sad because the game is really well done. If you liked V2 as I did, you'll like 3 even more. Everything seems to be improved.

bullshit article. He's basing and accusing rebellion that they have revoked GMG keys from a forum post without showing a proof of purchase that they key came from GMG.

The article maybe be only true though on those shady RU cd-key retailers

Also how about Dark Souls 2 keys that got revoked sold by same resellers (SimpleCDKeys at least). Although at smaller scale.
