I walked away from my laptop, to get a cup of thee (literally like 3 minutes), went back to my computer, pressed the space bar to wake up the screen, and without any warning whatsoever windows rebooted!!! (for a f*n windows update).

I lost a text document I was working on, and I lost an audio project in presonus studio one, and I lost all my browser tabs in both chrome and Firefox.
Not just did this disturb my work, but I actually lost very important data.

I am here to rant.
Please rant with me.

rant: verb \ˈrant\ (rænt): to talk loudly and in a way that shows anger : to speak or write in an angry or emotionally charged manner; rave : add {for sg forums} To express at length a complaint or negative opinion using mostly gifs

That's the thing, windows enables its own update system once you disable it.

You can prevent it easily, I haven't seen any updates in about an year already. Currently thinking if I should get Creators or not. :)

switch to linux? nyuk nyuk nyuk

also you can disable windows updates.. ive never had windows try to automatically update on me. you should just be able to go to windows updates and click settings and change them to never check for updates?

I am seriously thinking about switching to linux, because this is just some bullshit windows is forcing upon us. I am pretty sure I disabled auto update.

Well, here's the thing: you talk about lost audio projects, you talk about propriety software. That's where you will run into problems when switching to linux. I've been using linux as my main os for decades now, it's a decent system, very stable, fast, you can customize it so it looks and feels exactly like you want it to, but it's not good when it comes to propriety software. It's not good for the the latest AAA games, or when you need some commercial software to do something particular. That is probably just fine, in my experience commercial software usually comes with a catch, it spies on you, it's buggy, it's done just well enough that people buy it. There's a lot free open software that does the job just as fine if not better, there's also some propriety software for linux, but not for everything. You may consider dual boot with win7, win7 is old, but it does the job. It works great on dual boot with linux, do the important stuff like office, internet banking/shopping and so forth on linux, leave the games and the a few commercial programs you might need on win7. There's just that tiny little problem that M$ artificially cut the lifespan on win7 by making sure that the latest cpu generations (kaby lake, ryzen) won't run on win7.

Which is BS IMHO. I barely have time to play any games at all, let alone play a certain game multiple times because of artificially enforced limited lives.

As far as text documents go, saving it like crazy every couple of minutes is the way to go. :D

Also sending it to your email and such in case shit happens is also the way to go :D.

Be happy you werent hit by ransomware, my bro`s gf randomly picked it up online, and there werent any encryption tools for that particular ransomware available a few months ago so she ended up paying the ransom cause it was very important to her. And there is even people online praising their customer service LOL.

All in all, too bad mate. Look at it this way, (if it was something you care about and not just stuff like a school project you just want to get over with) it might end up better the second time around.
Life can be pretty shit, but trying to find a silver lining in shitty situations is good for mental health I`d say.

But no I never experienced such an update, you prolly had active hours turned on so it ended up updating it at such a time.

Agreed. Whenever I'm programming I just automatically press Ctrl+S after almost every line.

Or you could use Notepad++; it saves at every key press and you don't have to "save to file" to keep it.

That's what I use for text files. But when it comes to programming I prefer an actual editor (my favourite being Visual Studio).

I think that Windows need to have update manager same as Ubuntu. You can disable them, set to be downloaded automaticly or only get a notification on Ubuntu. And Ubuntu never reboot until you want.

I totally agree. This is pretty new though, I never had problems like these in windows. Sure you have to reboot, and update once in a while, but not all of a sudden, and without a warning.

In case it happens again, Firefox saves all your tabs in case it gets shut down unexpectedly like that. To restore your previous session and all its tabs, go to the home page (press the little house button or visit about:home) and click on the big "Restore previous session" button near the bottom of the page.

Was about to say the same thing. In addition, maybe you might want to change an option. (Loosely translating what my Korean version says) At Preferences, at Page to Display on Startup, change it to Previous Windows and Tabs.

same thing happens with chrome (normally..)
if chrome gets closed unexpectedly it automatically asks you if you want to restore your old tabs. - If the windows shutdown closed it "normally" tho... :/

I just changed the settings in Windows 10 so it only automatically updates and reboots outside of active hours. You can set these hours yourself within a 12h time span.

This will also stop all the necessary updates like security updates.
The better one would be to do the following with some of the steps mentioned above such as restart options.

  • Go to windows update settings
  • Advanced options
  • Tick Defer feature update

What that will do is only prompt you to update at major upgrades without blocking security updates. Usually the update will happen at months.

I agree, linux all of a sudden looks very appealing. But I have tried a bunch of linux distributions ubuntu, trisquel, and jide, but none of them were good enough as 'daily driver' operating system. Maybe I will give mint a try in the near future.

Well the thing is I use photoshop, premiere, audition, fl studio, cubase, studio one, unity, notion, finale, etc. and I am sure there are workarounds to make all of these programs (or alternatives for these programs) work well on linux too, but I am not really looking for workarounds.

ahh yeah. some of those probably do, especially gimp is a pretty good alt for photoshop, but i'm not sure about some of the others like premiere or flash studio.

I am facing two issues in Win10 whenever there is an update. I usually hibernate the system, so update remains on standby.
1st : Whenever I hibernate after when there is new updates, the system itself powers on. I don't know how this happens.
2nd : After sudden power cuts, whenever I start my system it starts to update, goes around 90-95% then says update was not successful, restoring back to previous state, restarts the system, restores previous one then only I could access it. This whole process takes about 45 min to 1 hrs.

I have solved the 2nd issue by deferring feature updates. Need to solve the 1st issue.

hibernate or standby? imo use standby instead of hibernate. it's not a full battery saver like hibernate is, but it does extend battery life a ton (assuming it's a battery powered device in the first place).

only thing i can think of is Wake On Lan though.. see if you have that enabled in the bios.. otherwise it shouldn't be turning itself on at all.

edit: standby is also known as suspend/suspended

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Hibernate.. its a desktop so no worries about battery life :p But we do have unexpected power cuts in our country, so the hibernate is better option for me.
Yeah I thought about that, everything is disabled on power options. One thing that's left is manage on bios. But I haven't found that option at all on bios
