Happy Cakeday to me! 😂

Thanks for more trash! Hope you are doing okay up in Houston. Here in Galveston it's been interesting. We were really lucky and had power the whole time, thanks to our proximity to UTMB. But our pipes froze so we didn't have running water for a while. Today everything seems back to normal -- finally got to shower and do laundry and dishes. Never thought I'd be excited about doing laundry and dishes!

We lost power for about 36 hours, and water for about 48. Boil notice has been lifted, so that's good. I'm betting that I'll have to spend like a thousand bucks on landscaping this spring, though...so much nice stuff killed by that many days of hard freeze.

But hey, no busted pipes (I boy-scouted the hell out of everything - :D), and things are returning to whatever passes for normal these days, so I'll take it. Glad to hear that you managed to have power the entire time!

At least one year my neighbor put blankets on his bushes to keep them from freezing. However, once you get enough snow that the (very small) bushes are buried (due to being next to the sidewalk and perforce having to shovel snow there), I don't think it matters much.

Glad things are returning to normal for you. Do you have a fireplace?

We do. But now the temperature is back up to 70F(21C) today, so no need to run it. Mother Nature be crazy. 🤪

We have a lot of landscaping on our property, especially because we have a pretty good-sized back yard for living in the city. It's great and makes everything look wonderful, but it also means that there's no way that I can cover most of it. I chose a few things, and that mostly worked, but I'm betting that 70%-80% of my plants are just going to be dead, and that sucks because I'd really invested a lot of time in getting them to be healthy and beautiful during pandemic lockdown. Of course, nurseries are going to have had a lot of their stock killed off by the same storm, so everything is going to be at premium costs this spring as well. But it is what it is...at least I didn't end up with burst pipes and a flooded house like a lot of other people. 乁( ◔ ౪◔)ㄏ

Glad to read you came through this mostly unscathed. Sorry about your plants though.

We had a week (8.2. - 14.2.) of bitter frost, extremely unusual for my part of Germany, with temperatures of -18°C during the night and around -8°C during the day. But aside from problems with my commute to work (buses and trains had big problems and rarely were available), I experienced no real problems.
Last week it got steadily warmer and yesterday it was 17°C during the afternoon and even a bit warmer in the sun. Which is, while not extremely unusual, still wuite a bit warmer than normal at this point of the year.

Sorry about your plants. I'm a fan of having lots of plants around my yard, and would hate to see them die due to a crazy freeze like you guys got.
Also happy 4th cakeday, grez1! Thank you for all you do for the community :)

I'm glad you are warm!

Ouch, that stinks! I understand. All that hard work and enjoyment freezing is quite a shame!
Yes, thankfully your pipes didn't burst! I knew an elderly lady whose old house had the pipes in the attic. One winter, the pipes burst and the ceiling caved in. Thankfully, she was out when it happened, but it was a massive mess. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

Thanks for the train! Further up in north texas was brutal too, lost power for about the same amount of time, but lost water for maybe 3 days. Landscaping price is a big oof though!

Ouch. Well, it's nice to have other people that can empathize. Misery loves company, and all of that. :D

BTW...tried to re-friend you on Steam after the whole phishing debacle last year. Can't do it. Looks like I'm still blocked or something (can't even message you there to tell you about it). Maybe check my status with you in your Steam profile and send me the invite? That should fix things. 😎

Coldest winter in 100 years, I think it was? Hopefully this will get the powers that be in Texas to start weatherproofing more things! I realize that this was a fluke occasion, but you never know! Something similar could happen again. To have this happen, especially during a pandemic, would be quite scary for many people!

Hopefully anyone that lives in Texas that is a member of SG is okay, as well as their loved ones.

Yeah, the news here in Houston said coldest day on record in 122 years. It was crazy. There's not only the need to prepare for this weather, but there are massive politics around our power grid in general, not to mention the desire or lack thereof to invest the money to prepare for fringe events like this one.
